The Klamath River is experiencing an amazing transformation. The remaining 3 of 4 dams are coming down. This winter, Yurok crews hand planted 8.5 tons of native seeds in the former reservoirs. Now, an array of locally adapted wildflowers & grasses cover much of the clay soil.

This winter, Yurok crews, under contract w/ RES, planted 8.7 tons of native seed, 76k trees & 28k acorns in the Klamath reservoir footprints. The crew is now removing noxious weeds from the replanted sites. Even more native vegetation will be planted in the coming months & years.

Even though the project has barely begun, one can see the potential for restoration in the newly free-flowing sections of Klamath River between the dams. This clip is from Mon, June 24 in the former Copco Reservoir. Weather permitting, the dams should be down by the early fall.

Crews are dismantling Iron Gate, Copco 1 & J.C Boyle dams on the Klamath River. The project will reopen 400 miles of salmon habitat. For the 1st time in more than 100 years, fish are expected to spawn above the dams in 2024. The former reservoirs are already greening up.

The last of this year’s condor cohort have been released! A8 and A9 took flight the morning of October 4th, 2024. These birds, both 2.5-year-old males, were hatched at Oregon Zoo’s Jonsson Center. There are now 18 condors flying over Yurok territory and the surrounding areas.

PREY-GO-NEESH KEECH KE-ME’-YEHL – CONDORS HAVE COME HOME! At around 10:30am, 2 condors were successfully released in Yurok Country, where the birds have been absent since 1892. The birds quickly left Northern CA Condor Program’s flight pen & flew over their new home redwoods.

The first phase of the monumental revegetation project in the Klamath River’s reservoir reach is off to a spectacular start. Hand seeded California poppies, Menzies fiddleneck and chick lupine are blooming throughout the 38-mile-long segment of the Klamath.

Condor A6, one on only 8 free-flying condors in far NorCal, is recovering from lead poisoning. The bird encountered a poacher-killed elk carcass shortly before he became ill. The elk is believed to be the source of the toxin. For more info
