I agree with @Jas_Sanghera_ that this was indeed the issue. Today’s decision does not help victims and survivors in the way that the majority of them wanted. But nor does it help @churchofengland at large. It really doesn’t help bishops in any way either. It simply keeps them under the spotlight for longer.

I am disappointed that @BpBlackburn amendment passed. Synod had an opportunity today to clearly say that we want our safeguarding to be completely independent. We have failed to do that as robustly as many of us had hoped. But we had a good and measured debate. There were many excellent contributions from members. I was particularly moved by Will Harwood’s appreciation of @BishopNewcastle witness, @SnowMartyn appreciation of that, as well as @MarshadeCordova @BpBlackburn @pmounstephen @wcpcqc arguments. My hope is that Model 4’s ambition and vision really does remain our ultimate destination. The majority of survivors and victims want this as well as those watching us in Parliament and the public at large. The reputation of the church and any moral authority that we have in the nation requires this to remain our ultimate goal.

It has been pointed out to me that I need to correct my rhetorical hyperbole by the facts of history.
