Prayers please for this city which I love.

now faced with more suffering and hardship. Please don't offer simplistic explanations or use us as a political football. Just ask for strength for NHS staff and wisdom for city leaders.
I profoundly disagree with the Home Secretary's speech about asylum and multiculturalism, her characterisation of Leicester, and of those seeking refuge in the UK. I am immensely proud to be Bishop of this diverse, creative and vibrant city.
So my son’s teacher was clearing out her mother’s house and came across this poster. Thinking I might send it to all churches ahead of my visits (particularly in view of last line)

lockdown continues, though with slight changes. Like many I’m tired and frustrated. But we will get through this and I continue to be proud of the response of this great city and county.
First preview evening for
@LeicsCathedral
Can’t quite believe how spacious, light, and alluring it is. And I get to preside at the first Eucharist this Sunday. Such a privilege.
Delighted to announce Saju Muthalaly as the next Suffragan Bishop of Loughborough and welcome him and his family to the Leicester Diocese at Brooksby College this morning
@leicestercofe
In the light of the tragic events at Leicester City Football Club yesterday evening, I know that the prayers of the whole Diocese of Leicester will be with those awaiting news of loved ones, and with the Emergency Services, and all those involved at the Football Club.
Delighted for my colleague and friend
@Guli_FD
and for
@chelmsdio
This is a great appointment. Of course we will be very sad to lose her from
@leicestercofe
but a great gift to the wider church
Downing Street has this morning announced that the Rt Rev Guli Francis-Dehqani will be the next Bishop of Chelmsford.

Helped with the funeral of my training incumbent today. A poignant moment given he was the one who taught me how to take funerals - 25 years ago. And he taught me so much more - largely through his listening and wisdom. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
We’re going to have to wait for full details of how places of worship will be effected by the government announcement. But come what may, the church will continue to serve others and be an instrument of God’s love.
So pleased to be part of a broad coalition of civic leaders, businesses, charities, and faith groups all standing together to inspire hope. Please join us.

Amazing experience to be involved in confirming 59 Masai men and women. More confirmation services to come tomorrow and Sunday. The numbers are beyond anything I’ve experienced before.
A moving service of thanksgiving and farewell to a wonderful colleague Lusa and all the Ngoy family at All Saints, Loughborough this afternoon

Poignant time of gathering at the Remembrance Service & Parade in Victoria Park this morning - we will remember them - as we commit ourselves once again to peace

An article published on April 7 mistakenly claimed that the Clapham chemical attacker Abdul Ezedi had been supported by the Church of England, and that this enabled him to 'beat the system'. We accept that Mr Ezedi is not known to have had any connections with the Church of
A huge thank you to everyone involved in the Leicester Cathedral Revealed project, for their incredible hard work, skill and vision to get it so far. It was a huge privilege to preside and preach at services yesterday on the Feast of Christ the King

The cut in the aid budget - made worse by no set date for restoration - is shameful and wrong. It’s contrary to numerous Government promises and its manifesto.
I join others in urging MPs to reject it for the good of the poorest, and the UK’s own reputation and interest.
This footage shows the aftermath of an apparent explosion in the Hinckley Road area of Leicester. Police have declared a "major incident." More information as we get it.
Supporting children’s and youth workers is now an urgent priority. Research shows 70% would like to stay in this work long term but most leave after just a few years.
This is such a good radio piece on our new monastic community. If you want to know why young adults are looking for something different... please listen.
We were honoured to be able to welcome
@GretaThunberg
to Bristol Cathedral this morning, as a quiet space away from the crowds, and to prepare and liaise with the Bristol teenagers organising the event with

We stand with you.

As we pray for all those affected by the helicopter crash in Leicester we also remember those grieving in Pittsburgh and we stand with Jewish people everywhere. We're proud of good relationships in Leicester but can't be complacent when we know there is such hatred in the world.
Wonderful day of celebration at St Margaret's, Leicester as 14 new Priests were Ordained into God's church with many family, friends and the community present

At the end of the
#Synod
debate on
#LLF
here are my reflections: “We’ve had an open, thoughtful and gracious debate about how we might move forward together as a church in the next stage of the implementing our decisions on LLF and the work of reconciliation amid our divisions.
Born in 1902 in China to Scottish missionary parents, Eric Liddell played rugby for Scotland & won the 400m gold at the 1924 Paris Olympics after refusing to run the 100m heats on a Sunday. A missionary in China from 1925-43, he was interned by the Japanese & died on 21/02/1945.
Just back from sabbatical and beginning to re-engage with work. What a privilege to welcome
@churchofengland
first African heritage Diocesan Chancellor. Looking forward to working with her.
Bishop Martyn was delighted to commission and welcome Naomi Gyane KC as the diocese's new Chancellor. She will act as the independent Judge of the Diocesan Consistory Court, meaning she will oversee legal issues relating to the use and reordering of church buildings and land.
I completely agree. We also need Readers who are teachers of the faith, enablers of mission and leaders in church and society. We’re refocusing the work of Central Readers’ Council around these three themes.
It was about 5 minutes into this afternoon's meeting when I realised that the person sitting next to me in "civvies" was my Bishop! Whoops, should have gone to specsavers!
I’ve written to my Chair of Board of Finance to suggest we discuss this at our forthcoming Bishop’s Council. Leicester is

The best, quickest and most Gospel-centred approach is generosity, gift and grace. If dioceses could voluntarily support each other in the way we expect parishes to do, we could fix this in months not years.
Very aware that our school Heads are carrying a very heavy load at the moment. Giving thanks for each one and praying they will have wisdom in the difficult decisions they make daily. Also grateful for the support offered by

God of all grace,
You love all that you have made,
And your mercy is over all the world,
Comfort those who grieve and those who wait for news of loved ones,
Strengthen those who care for the bereaved or injured,
And support this great city of Leicester
A fond farewell and heartfelt thanks this evening to the Dean of Leicester, David Monteith, as he journeys on to follow God's call to Canterbury

After yesterday’s confirmation of 59, today it’s 143. It took four hours! Amazing things happening in the Tanzanian church. We have so much to learn in England.
So looking forward to the Ordinations this weekend. Big thanks to Cathy Ross for leading the retreat and hugely moving for +S and I to meet with all the Ordinands 1:1 and to wash their feet on Thursday evening

That feeling when you’ve worked for months to reshape a charity and the AGM agrees! Great meeting today and strong endorsement to reshape our work around teaching the faith, enabling mission and leading church and society
Special afternoon at Leicester Cathedral praising God through many cultures, languages and diverse expressions at the annual Global Carol Service

During this period of national mourning, I have held off commenting on the worrying events which have taken place in Leicester. This is a city that has always prided itself in strong community relations. ⅓
I rather like this prayer on the day we remember the naming of Jesus “give us grace faithfully to bear his Name, to worship him in the freedom of the Spirit,
and to proclaim him as the Saviour of the world;”
We appeal for calm and commit ourselves to continue supporting healthy disagreement, being good neighbours to those who have different opinions in order to maintain the peaceful communities we have long been proud of in this city."
A huge thank you to Hilary Ison and Christopher Southgate as we gathered clergy, lay leaders and colleagues from across the diocese for a study day around experiences of trauma
@leicestercofe
An honour to lead the Service & Parade at the Arch of Remembrance in Victoria Park this morning as we give thanks for all those who gave so much
@leicestercofe
Last week in Oral Questions, I was assured that the rate of children living in absolute poverty had fallen, but data published by the government today shows 100,000 more children are living in absolute poverty than last year - bringing the total to 4.3 million (1/2)
I'm deeply saddened by this tragic news. My prayers are for Simon's family, friends and former work colleagues. He served this county with great distinction and will be sadly missed by so many.
A beautiful day to begin my Lent Pilgrimage, praying with and receiving the generous hospitality & welcome of the communities of St Mary's Anstey, All Saints Thurcaston, All Saints Newtown Linford and St Peter's Copt Oak: what3words ///journeying.praying.being

Real delight to licence Jonathan Dowman as Growing Faith Enabler in the Launde Deanery today in a joy filled service at Tugby with children from all the 4 church schools

Today I will be licensing Andy Hartropp as Vicar of Ibstock and Heather. It will be a very small private service. Please pray for him as he starts ministry in such unusual circumstances.
Youngest sons birthday today. Had been intending to go out for bbq but decided not to battle the crowds and instead stay in beautiful Bishops Lodge garden
