Long 🧵: 1/8 This is an article that has conflated several issues. The medical standards (for all of Defence) haven’t been changed for inxs of 20 years. Medical provision has changed as has medical technology. It therefore makes sense (to me at least) to review the standards.
The Royal Navy is struggling to recruit and struggling to retain talent.
PSL blog on why the RN may need reduce to an escort fleet of 8-12 ships due to crew shortages.
Is it time to scrap medical standards to fix this?
Well that was a week! Thank you to everyone who commented on my new hat (and new job!) post. I know the gold on the tricorn isn’t as impressive as the male version but watch this space.

1/3 The Royal Navy successfully trains 1000s of personnel a year to in order to meet all of its operational commitments, including delivering (or maintaining) the UK’s nuclear deterrent.
🧵 1/2 I am aware of the current issues being experienced at HMS Collingwood. Heating and hot water have been restored to some buildings and contractors are on site working to restore services across the rest of the establishment.

2/3 Employers across the UK are competing for people against a demanding recruiting environment, and the Royal Navy is no different. Our commitment to recruit and retain the best talent is relentless so that we maintain the highest operational standards.
2/2 Most personnel have already commenced their well earned Christmas Leave and have returned to their homes and their families. But for the very limited numbers we still have on site, this is significant - we will ensure that they are properly looked after.
The First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Ben Key KCB CBE: "Let me be clear, the Royal Navy has zero tolerance for sexual assault and exploitation.
Without fear or favour, regardless of rank or status, I will remove this abhorrent behaviour from anywhere within the Royal Navy."
Anyone seeking to join the
@RoyalNavy
will no longer need to prove they can swim in what a source called a "desperate" relaxing of standards. But a spokesperson said standards aren't dropping because all recruits must still pass a swim test during training
3/3 The Royal Navy offers a unique and rewarding career in a novel environment, and we work hard to attract the best people to deliver operations from seabed to space.
Her Majesty the Queen has confirmed the appointment of Major General Sharon Nesmith as the next Deputy Chief of the General Staff, in the rank of Lieutenant General.
She will begin her new appointment in August 2022.

As we make final preparations for the Coronation, I say to all those on parade, go well and enjoy the moment; it will be a day to remember for the rest of your lives. And to all those on duty or deployed around the world continuing our vital work, thank you for keeping the watch.
5/8 We review medical documents in house here and enable decisions to be made where outdated standards don’t help. A blue inhaler given to you at 3 and never used shouldn’t stop you joining. This is about improving the process and engagement with those who want to join.
2/8 As an example - when I joined ACL surgery was quite difficult and not always successful. Today that is not the case and people with ACL reconstruction play high level sport. We should reconsider the ban on this (there are others). Everyone still needs to be fit for Ph1 Trg.
What an absolute honour to welcome you all home. 🤩 I owe you a round for being in the wrong rig 🤦🏼♀️ Brilliant Ship’s Company, fabulous families and a reminder of why we are working so hard to make it better for our people.
