My father died a few days ago. This comes only a few years after losing my mother to Alzheimer’s.
Departing from the usual Econ tweeting, I wanted to share some thoughts on grief, work and resilience:
🚨Are you from an underrepresented background and interested in an Econ PhD but not sure how to best write your application package? If so, apply to the Mentoring Program

So this time I am going to welcome sadness at the table, give it the space, time, and attention it deserves. Resilience doesn’t always have to mean powering through, it can also be knowing when to embrace winter, with the intimate knowledge that it eventually gives way to light
I am sharing this because I could use a few (virtual) hugs, but also in the hope that this resonates with some of you. A few years back, when I lost my mother, I wish someone had told me it was ok to press pause.
In the meantime, a massive shout out to my co-authors who have been nothing short of amazing, both sending heartwarming messages and stepping up to keep the boat afloat. I am sure coming back in a few weeks will be a humbling experience, realizing how much can be done without me!
The alluring pitfall is however to use work as a coping mechanism, doubling down on professional commitments to avoid the painful grieving journey. I have done that in the past, but if the mind is a marvelous trickster, the body keeps the score.
In those trying moments, I appreciate even more how lucky I am to have a job I love so much that it remains a compass when everything else seems to go off the rails.

We find: workers, esp in low-wage firms, underestimate wages elsewhere.
A model links such misperceptions w/ employer monopsony & wage dispersion.

My JMP is about the benefit of information transparency for women yet somehow this information below is NOT making me better off. Should I be concerned about the external validity of my paper??? 😅

Fascinating sociology book on the gender of capital, explaining how culture and laws have shaped the wealth distribution in favour of men. Great dive into how wealth transfers (inheritance / divorce) supposedly designed to enforce equality end up leaving women behind.

Thanks
@rolandrathelot
! This gives me the chance to share that reading your research on gender differences in job search with
@alexandraroulet
and
@tlebarbanchon
helped me shape a lot of the ideas for this paper!
Women ask wages that are 3.3% lower than men, which results in a 1.8% gender gap in the starting wage. Fresh evidence from a US online platform for engineering jobs on 123,000 workers and 44,000 jobs. Fascinating JMP by

Check out this fascinating JMP on the redistributive implications of the European posted worker policy, by my friend and brilliant co-author

@MathildeMunoz

Young Economist Award), her JMP "Trading Non-Tradables" deals with a super important topic
We leverage linked admin data on the universe of workers to construct proxies of workers’ OOs and compare them to beliefs. We draw on the wage changes of coworkers upon job switching as well as firm pay premia. Main finding: there is systematic bias. What does it mean?
Different firms pay very different wages to similar workers. But are workers aware of these pay differences?
We elicited workers’ beliefs about their rent and outside option (OO) in Germany & compared these beliefs to objective proxies using linked admin data. What did we learn?
How would firms respond to worker bias? Applying Matejka & McKay (2012) to the labor market, we show that misperceptions about OO lead to monopsony. How? Workers' inattention to wages gives rise to a multinomial logit choice model & lowers firm-specific elasticity of labor supply
We're excited to announce we've been awarded a grant by
@berkeleyecon
to fund activities related to gender equity! Special shoutout to
@EvaLyubich
and
@MariaDieci
who led the grant writing effort.
Workers perceive large rents (med= 10%, mean = 14%) but there is a lot of heterogeneity (SD=11.86).These rents are entirely derived from non-wage amenities, that is the average worker believes her next-best job will pay exactly the same. Next Q: how accurate are these beliefs?
Objectively low-paid (high-paid) workers are overpessimistic (overoptimistic) about their OOs. Workers’ beliefs about their own wage change are close to zero in high AND low wage firms. Similar results for beliefs about co-worker wage changes, rather than own.

@CageJulia
There’s a lot more in the paper, incl. additional benchmarks for the accuracy of beliefs, alternative elicitations in cross-randomized surveys, calculation of the share of non-viable jobs if beliefs were corrected, a simple model of the role of workers' bias in firm sorting etc.

Some news I'm really excited about 🥳: with 30 other PhD students in Economics at LSE, we have launched a mentoring programme for PhD applicants from underrepresented backgrounds.
The programme is called AMP:
This 👇👇👇 academia needs to be more inclusive not only of gender and racial minorities but also of socio-economically disadvantaged students. IMO this starts with grants/funding based on socio-economic background. Much more can be done...
Unlike most PhDs, I grew up socioeconomically disadvantaged. Neither of my parents went to college

I definitely can! The closing of the ask gap is roughly due 2/3 to women asking for more and 1/3 men asking for less indeed. I should emphasize that next time I present :)
Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to take part in the
@AEACSWEP
mentoring workshop for female and non-binary PhD students. Great advice and insights were shared by mentors, panellists, and organizers. Here are my 10 key take-aways for those who could not join:
Overheard my mom tell her friends: "No, she's not the Wall-Street-type economist. She can't make you rich, but she can tell you why you are poor."
Show me a more accurate description of a development economist. I'll wait.
The US election is tomorrow. If you, like me, are tired of horse-race-style reporting, and need to zoom out, I wanna tell you a story. It’s about an ancient force influencing the election. And, as a bonus, it’ll give you an Easter egg to watch for as the returns come in. THREAD

In France, the main statistical agency, INSEE, designated the male as head of household until 2004… then changed it, in most surveys, to the oldest (active) person...
Trying v. hard to find glimmers of hope here: new research shows that the coronavirus crisis has increased Americans’ feelings of solidarity with others.

Thanks so much for your caring words and for sharing your story Juli. It does make a difference. It must have been incredibly painful to lose your father at such a young age, I can’t imagine. Sending hugs your way 🤍
