An algorithm decided you should see this tweet! Our new paper shows a big problem with algorithmic curation: it hides content by people not like you (different races for example). You say: sure, that’s because users themselves are prejudiced. We say: it's something more! 🧵

We find that nonprosecution dramatically *reduces* the likelihood of future criminal legal contact. (Our primary outcome measure is a future criminal complaint — basically an arrest w/ probable cause. We see similar effects on future prosecutions and criminal records.)

@paulgp I don't think they are advocating F-statistics in the 100s "or nothing". They are saying that with lower ones you need an inflation factor for the critical values for 95% CIs. Generally they would advocate estimating Anderson-Rubin CIs which are robust to weak instruments.

The Michigan AG has filed two amicus briefs citing plethora of rigorous evidence from researchers to argue the sex offender registries are not effective and are actually punishment:

@leah_boustan Do you think I'm crazy? I feel like R is really taking off and that it would be better for them? Also course is already expensive between the textbook and "myeconlab" which I feel bad about, so R being free feels good to allow flexibility to use at home.

Overall, it appears that scaling back prosecution in Suffolk County, MA has big beneficial results. Of course, effects might be different in other places. We’re already working with other DAs’ offices to consider the effects of similar policy changes elsewhere. Stay tuned!

This is true in NJ as well. I registered on NJ's COVID vaccination portal a few days ago and they asked for my occupation sector (Higher education) and this morning I got an email that I would be in Phase 1C.

Virginia just updated its #COVID19 vaccination guidelines to deem university faculty “additional essential workers.” This puts us in phase 1c of the state's vaccination plans.

Please, please skip the literature review slide. You only have 15-20 minutes, don't spend 3-5 of them on other people's research.

Yes - exactly! I have heard over and over that you will get compared to people who graduated the same PhD year as you. But then what good does the "clock stoppage" really do?

I have been writing some tenure letters this week. No one provides clear info about clock stoppage. All you know is PhD year. So, if men stop and work but women stop and engage in infant care, I will divide by same number of “years since PhD” in error

Why do the usernames and password have to be so complicated? Am I worried someone will submit my referee report for me? I would relish it :)

@jenniferdoleac In a similar vein - buy a bunch of power bars/granola bars/iced coffee in a jar things/whatever you like. You likely won't have time to "stop for lunch", and again lines will be long! This was my shopping before interviews in San Diego!

Communities across the U.S. are debating whether low-level offenses should be prosecuted in a criminal court, or whether prosecution does more harm than good. Many places have elected reform-minded District Attorneys who promise to scale back the prosecution of these offenses.
