Incredible news to wake up to!!!!!!๐๐พ๐ฅณ. Claudia Goldin made the quite subversive choice to study women - what shapes their labor supply decisions, their labor market outcomes, and more - at a time when most did not consider 50% of the population worthy of such study. [1/3].
BREAKING NEWS.The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2023 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel to Claudia Goldin โfor having advanced our understanding of womenโs labour market outcomes.โ. #NobelPrize

This paper was a complete passion project. Too many women experience violence at work. Hopefully, by understanding the costs of these events and role of management in mediating them, we can do better. For it to land in such an amazing & dream journal is such an honor๐๐ฅณ [1/3].

I've occasionally had grad students who seem to think cleaning and doing all the nitty gritty of data collection and analysis is beneath them. Completely wrong, data collection, cleaning, and analysis is usually >75% of my time on a paper, and often the most challenging.
@snavarrol @causalinf Scott, I do think the original point made in your thread is VERY impt for applied people, esp grad students on #EconTwitter. Putting together data is likely NOT why any one decided to get a PhD in econ. But the entirety of a paper is conditional on the data being "right.".

Op-ed on my newest paper w/ @abicadams, @KristiinaHuttu2 & @ningzhang0927 out today in @PostOpinions. We provide rigorous evidence documenting what victims have long spoken about: the important role of economic suppression in abusive relationships. [1/3]

A reminder of the impacts of children on women's careers. Graph from our paper showing women's incomes drop around 20% after birth, persisting at least 5 years. Kids can be great, but are really costly. Full paper with @eckhoffandresen found here:

Just the other week I had to have this conversation with a student. The "you may have to interact with this person based on this professional thing, but just try not to be alone with them" conversation.
Things you may not realize your female colleagues do in academia:.-teach grad students which creepy men at conferences to actively avoid because we all know they are bad but they are still allowed to be journal editors and advisors.-go out of our way to also avoid them.

ARGH!!! In my first year of the PhD I was told twice by professors that not everyone is meant to be an economist, when I went to ask about how I could improve in classes I was struggling with. I ended up doing well, but almost left after 1st year. [1/2].
My first week @Princeton I was told by an econ faculty member that economics wasn't for me. That didn't deter me. But, it speaks to the hostile environment Black women face in economics and policy. Thank you for this op-ed @drlisadcook and @itsafronomics .

Thrilled to see this out in print. Hoping that with more evidence on how domestic violence unfolds and with more evidence-based solutions, domestic violence will become less and less relevant to future generations of women. Now, back to work to make that a reality.

Intense start: @florianederer definitely didn't hold back on how ugly that website often is. Which I think is good - let's call a cat a cat. Or in this case, let's not talk around the fact that this is a website with an insane amount of brutally horrific content about many of us.

"Today, we celebrate your path-breaking academic achievements. They are more than a baton to be passed. They are giant shoulders from which coming generations will be able to see very far." . Watch Claudia Goldin receive her 2023 prize in economic sciences - congratulations!

@seema_econ This junior, still tenure track scholar appreciates that editors are still doing their best to try and turn around articles during these extraordinary times. Many of us can't afford to lose a year (or more) with zero turnaround of articles. So thank you!.

I got asked (somewhat negatively) recently why I'm on twitter. Probably my fave part of #econtwitter is learning about new papers I might not discover otherwise, not only in areas where I research but also in areas outside of my agenda. And I can amplify this great work! [1/2].

Super interesting paper by @soumitrashukla9. While we have hundreds of papers that look at potential bias in responses to resumes/initial applications, this is one of only a few that examines the full process, including interviews. Well worth a read!

It turns out that female-managed firms do one very important thing differently: ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐. And it is this action that explains the differences in the loss of female employees between male vs female-managed firms, as we show in the table below. [14/18]

If you want to know whether offering paternity leave (with high take up) reduces the gender income gap, we find that paternity leave has no impact in our paper here: I was expecting to find something, so view this as an important null result.
For years I have read (and even written) about why paternity leave (both offering it and normalizing taking it) is key for gender equality. But I don't think I've ever understood it the way I did reading this column from @ylanmui.

Issue in honor of one of my wonderful advisers. In addition to his multitude of research accomplishments, Joe is also one of the professors who believed in me in grad school and helped me believe in myself. His encouragement helped keep me in the field, and I am so grateful.
Forthcoming issue of the JoLE in honor of Joe Altonji. Much of Joe's pathbreaking research on earnings dynamics, consumption, labor supply, family risk-sharing, and human capital is at the heart of quantitative macroeconomics with heterogeneous households.

This graph. amazing and yet so depressing.
Me and @johannarickneโs paper on promotion to top jobs and marriage stability was just published in AEJ: Applied Economics. This picture shows the main finding of the paper: promotion increases the divorce probability for women, but not for men. 1/10

A wonderful statement of the incredible power of studying economics. To this day I absolutely love the subject and the amazingly broad range of applications.
Professor Edward Glaeser is the New Chair of Harvard's Economics Department. In this short statement, he makes a convincing case for why economics continues to be an exciting field of inquiry.

These numbers always shock me. I am one of the only 21.9% of women tenure track professors in economics. Table from the @AEACSWEP 2021 newsletter. Hopefully I'll get to that full professor one day and help increase that 14.8% women number.
