argues that Sweden’s law criminalizing the purchase of sexual services increased rapes by about 50%. Two of his analyses rely on the national timing of the law. However, if we look at the national yearly average there is no such increase. (1/3)
Regression discontinuity designs in electoral settings are incredibly popular. However, the “canonical” RDDs are in plurality elections. In this thread, I will provide some suggestions on how to implement RDDs in PR systems and how to avoid the most common pitfalls. (1/10)

The Department of Government at Uppsala University is hiring a full professor (any field). Please apply to join our great department which has, among other things, a great group in Gender and Politics (

Who is actually smarter, epidemiologists or economists? Our paper "Who Becomes a Politician" provides an answer to this rather strange debate. Econ and Poli Sci PhDs working in universities have similar cognitive scores, but both lose out to the average medical doctor.
Candidates for Swedish political parties differ starkly in their experiences growing up. This figure shows the share that had a rich parent (above 90th income percentile) or a poor parent (less than 60 % of median income) during adolescence (age 15 to 18).
What can we learn from this? Individual women might want to “pick the right husband”, as argued by successful Swedish politician
@birgittaohlsson
. At the macro-level, gender equality in the labor market will be hard to achieve without gender equality in couple formation. 10/10

Why is there a negative effect? A “temptation effect” would imply that promoted women meet a bunch of hot guys and “trade up”. An audience of female politicians will usually crack up when they hear this. Indeed, we see that promoted women are slow to enter new relationships. 6/10
A friendly reminder. Audit studies do not measure gender bias in hiring. They measure gender bias in the first step of the hiring process, the evaluations of written applications.
Meta-analysis of field studies on gender bias in hiring
In male-dominated/gender-balanced fields, male applicants were favored before 2009. Since then, however, there's been no consistent bias or even a weak pro-female bias.
Incredible sloppy reporting of the

If we want to discuss the development of the Swedish welfare state oneneeds to discuss the $20 billion tax cuts implemented in the last 15 years, a number far higher than any estimated cost of immigration.
Divorce is not explained by “short term” factors such as passing the husband in income (most women in our sample out-earn their husband prior to the promotion). Rather, the promotion seems to be the final straw in a long process of moving away from the initial expectation. 9/10
I am so happy to finally have this working paper out! It has been the most rewarding, interesting, and also the most challenging project I have worked on.
New working paper on sexual harassment! We do three things: i) describe the variation in self-reports of sexual harassment across occupations and workplaces, ii) measure how workers valuate the risk of harassment, and iii) test if employers compensate that risk. Thread [1/16]
Two variables approximate how traditional the marriage was in its early days (i.e. 20 years prior to the promotion): i) the spousal age-gap, and ii) the division of parental leave. Our analysis shows that women’s divorces are concentrated to the least egalitarian couples. 8/10

We argue that traditional gender norms on couple formation may be behind the divorce effect. Most women in our data have “married up”, while the men have “married down”. Both men and women who reach top jobs have relationships that initially focused on the husband’s career. 7/10
Our new working paper shows that Swedish municipal politicians live in socio-economically privileged neighborhoods that they shield from school closures and the construction of multi-family homes.
We have a New Working Paper on the political economy of politicians’ neighborhoods! We show that politicians live in richer neighborhoods and protect them from undesirable buildings and the removal of public goods. A thread 1/11, and the Paper:
I am very excited to see our paper on “Sexual Harassment and Gender Inequality in the Labor Market,” out in the QJE. For a longer thread on the paper see . This paper highlights the importance of discrimination in work conditions. 1/5
Very happy to see our paper out in the AJPS! Carlo’s thread does a great job of summarizing the paper, but I also want to further highlight a methodological contribution. 1/6
We depart from the fact that women are underrepresented in top jobs throughout the world and across sectors of society. While some research points to the importance of family constraints in explaining women’s absence, there is no research on how promotion affects divorce. 2/10
For democrats depressed about the Governor's election in Florida, my JOP paper with Bob Erikson and Jim Snyder suggests a 3 to 4 percentage point penalty in the state presidential vote share from winning the Governors elections in midterm years
For promotions to CEO, we can only compare promoted men with promoted women. This comparison shows an acceleration of divorce after promotion for women but not for men. The results from politics seem to extend to the private sector. 5/10
Very excited to have this new paper out! Working on this paper made me reflect on how much better the work environment has been in the more gender-balanced workplaces I've worked in. All feedback is very welcome!
I cannot believe what I'm reading here...

This is such a good, but also depressing, paper. It clearly shows why a discriminatory work environment, rather than preferences, can lead to women sorting out of male-dominated environments.

Job opportunity! 2 year post-doc at the Department of Political Science in Gothenburg. The post-doc is within Johannes Lindvall's project on political conflicts over public services.
In our main analysis, we examine the causal impact of promotions to top political jobs in Sweden. Politics is unique in the sense that we can identify the job contenders, who gets the promotion, and how close the contest was. 3/10
The paper uses three alternative estimation methods. However, these do not estimate the effect of the ban itself and have problematic properties that I would like to look into. While peer review is a good first hurdle, we also need to scrutinize research post-publication( 3/3)
I just wrote a critical review of a book about gender ideology in Swedish Academia. In a response the authors argue that the results of my AER paper “Gender Quotas and The Crisis of the Mediocre Man” make me a dubious reviewer. Here is the paper!

Det är ett stort missförstånd att män på botten av inkomstdistributionen fått det svårare att hitta en partner. Tvåförsörjarfamiljen har gjort det möjligt för män med lägre inkomster att bilda familj.

This is a very important policy issue that we need to get right. I have a hard time figuring out how the paper can find an effect as there are no replication files, but I think it has something to do with using outcome data at the regional level and using a logged outcome (2/3)
Very excited to join this workshop to learn about new exciting research in this important field, as well as to present our new work on combating sexual harassment in the Norwegian military with an intervention based on information nudges.
The first graph in this tread showed the descriptive comparison of job-contenders for Mayor or Parliamentarian. This Figure shows D-i-D estimates. A host of robustness checks validate the design, including a restriction to quasi-random promotions in close elections. 4/10

Anybody doing regression discontinuity designs in complex electoral settings (such a PR systems or seat Majorities) should take a careful look at the bootstrapping method of Kotakorpi, Poutvaara and Terviö when measuring the closeness of elections.

US academia should adopt the Scandinavian model of social shaming for working weekends and not taking a 5 week vacation during the summer......
Great to see that 2 of the 10 papers that made it to AEA journals research highlights of the years are written by Swedes (

I just came across the worst example of sample selection. This paper examines gender discrimination in Swedish academia, but exclude gender imbalanced fields with the motivation that these environments can be hostile to the minority...
Påverkar sexuella trakasserier i arbetslivet vilka jobb vi väljer? Och har det i förlängningen betydelse för inkomstskillnaderna mellan kvinnor och män?

The study is based on register data, not a survey. There is no information on divorce initiation. Also, there is a general problem with defining initiation. For example, if one partner cheats and the other files for divorce, who has initiated the divorce?
Now we finally have the answer, the only reason behind the relatively high gender equality in the nordic countries is the Viking heritage! Also some impressively selective citations of gender quota studies!
NEW STUDY: Gender quotas have been ineffective and several aspects of Nordic social policies have negatively affected women’s career progress and even contributed to a glass ceiling.

Do women pay a higher price for power? Here is a thread (now in English) based on my forthcoming paper about psychological and physical violence against politicians, demonstrating that women higher in the political hierarchy experience more violence than other politicians.
All the stories shared under

show the taxing harassment faced by ethnic minorities in academia. Listening to these stories is depressing, but also crucial for me as a bystander to learn about the various forms of racially based harassment in academia.
One of the best parts of visiting Yale last year was getting to know
@yoko_okuyama
In this thread she describes her great Job Market paper on the impact of the US radio program “women’s hour” that was meant to improve gender equality. (continued)
I am puzzled by the persistent idea that couple formation is all about women's mate preferences, while we men passively have to accept those choices..... These results might as well say that women at the top face a different marriage market.
I find it rather puzzling when academics think it is fine with government bans on certain research fields as long as it is a field that they do not like. If the gender studies departments are dysfunctional it should be dealt with by the university, not the state.
