You combine them. Health, career, family, friends and hobby. Workout on a lunch break, Hike with family or friends. Involve family in a hobby etc.
Today I will pass up the gas station that used to be a staple on Fridays, where I would spend $100 on booze and junk food, followed by a weekend spent in a drunken daze.
Instead, I'm spending the money on a brand new baseball glove for my son on his birthday, and I'll be
Today I turn the big 4-0! However, my body and mind are not a day over 25. Took me 8 years to become the guy that I always hated, a positive, grateful, sober, healthy dad. I am grateful that I found Mindfulness. I'm grateful that I can be a confident observer in this life,

The day I was told that what I was experiencing was "generalized anxiety" made me extremely angry, this life changing debilitating experience is called generalized anxiety? The name doesn't fit.

Never tell a doctor what you 'have' they will immediately look for reasons why you don't. I stopped going after a while and figured it out for myself, when I went back for treatment, they told me I was wrong.
@KerceWill
I'm looking back at photos of what I've missed over the worst few years of drinking. Look forward to many good years to come, great decision.

The longer cycle is more energy and water efficient, it must have something to do with soaking the dishes in water to loosen the dirt. Or something like that.
@SoldierofResist
When in doubt, power out. Turn off the TV and devices. Go somewhere and be present, somewhere easy to focus on where you are. A walk in the woods, and use all of your senses to observe. Be in your moment, not someone else's.
@4utelsie
It just takes me back to the day when just having the extra laundry from exercising was too much to handle. Or getting in the shower was too big of a task, and yes not to mention mobility issues, weather, and all kind of obstacles. Setting this expectation for people is just

When there's too much to do, I end up doing nothing. I've been there, it doesn't help that nothing gets done and just piles up. A terrible cycle.

I hear you on this, I get in the middle of the "sunshine cures depression" posts, because they clearly aren't talking about the same depression. Perhaps the fact that people use the same word in different contexts causes confusion.

I wore uniforms for 12 years, I loved it. I never had to worry about what to pick out of a closet every day. I still wear a "uniform" to work even though it's not required. It's just easy, and less of a distraction. I wore the same clothes in college as well.
@sword_mommy
This happens a lot when your purpose is anything other than experiencing your human experience, you are lost when the kids leave the house, the job is lost or you retire, a divorce, etc.
@deorumdefectum
Took me three times to kick alcohol. Ultimately someone convinced me to talk to a therapist and it changed my life. Mindfulness, as a way to deal with anxiety and depression, also helped with the loneliness. Just get on the path again and keep searching.
No one is going to impress upon you that there is good in the world happening at this moment. It is your responsibility to go out of your way to recognize it and bring it to your focus.
Mindfulness is being fully in the present moment.
Don't let the seemingly over simplified explanation deter you from trying it.
Observe like you'll be quizzed on it later.
Man I hate people so much!
That used to be my favorite saying
I absolutely hated the guy I am today, 6 years ago. Nothing annoyed me more than the dad that didn't drink and wore the 'grateful dad' shirt.
Now I'm wearing that shirt, I'm present, and I see people in an

I always have a tendency to just look for pain. Now though, I scan my heart rate, my breathing, my muscle tightness, tingling feelings. There isn't always a result, it just happens. Discovering 'fine' is fine.

There is an incredible amount of pressure to deal with the past, to forgive myself, solve myself, change the way I looked at it, morph it, I was even told that I must, no questions asked, or I would not move forward.
However, I decided that I could spend a lifetime

Identifying with our suffering because it's easier, it's not a great way to live. We are so much more. I did it for 35 years, we need to realize we can be content, and dare I say happy.
Perhaps happiness is overvalued or overemphasized in today's culture, whereas a state of peacefulness or normalcy might actually be a more realistic goal.
Mindfulness can teach you to rest your mind more easily between mental tasks. The more responsibilities you have, the more important it is to capitalize on free moments, even if they are only moments.
@PhilosophyDose_
Forming an opinion on absolutely everything. Spend a day trying to notice without judging and you'll see how hard it is, notice physical qualities such as colors, shapes, textures, without naming them or thinking about how they Make you feel.
You can perfect the art of living through the practice of Mindfulness. You can gain control of your life from over thinking and constant anxiety. I've done the hard work, and will use what I've learned to help make your goal more easily obtainable.
Modern Mindfulness is the down to earth, secular practice of keeping a clear head, being in control of your thoughts and emotions not by ignoring them, but feeling them and then grounding to the moment using all of your senses, and repeating the process.

I don't agree with any comments on social media about patients from therapists. No name attached doesn't Make it any more appropriate.
I started doing body scan meditations when I was analyzing fight or flight in situations that stressed me out. Now, it has become part of my daily routine. It used to be taking time out once a week. Now I take time to do it quickly many times a day. I have also attached
At rock bottom there wasn't a light switch for me, there was a spark that made me realize I needed to commit to change with curiosity and open mind.
You can find that spark without hitting rock bottom, just as you can be grateful for easy breathing when you don't have a cold.
A year after I quit drinking, I was rewarded with a strange power. I can remember things. I can go to a meeting at work, and not have to write everything down. I can just, recall it later, even the next day. It is incredible.

Don't expect to go from chaos to bliss just because you have decided to improve.
It takes practice, like learning an instrument, or training for a race.
Find solace in your decision to improve.
Step one, notice your breath.
Step two, notice the green in this picture.
To spend so much time figuring out your past, or 'unlearning' is meant just to coddle your ego.
If it affects your today, deal with it from that angle. Don't be obtuse.

Sometimes it's better to find a neutral state of mind.
It may be too big of a swing to get from a negative to a positive.
Negative to neutral, positive to neutral. Be in flow with the full spectrum of human emotions.
Neutral is a state of mindfulness.
You don't know what to do with your mind between thoughts, so you fill it with them, every waking moment. Between thoughts, turn to the details of the present moment, actively observing with all of your senses.

That's not how that works unfortunately, mine have been stable for years wearing glasses, since the 2nd grade. They haven't been getting worse. If this were true, then people wouldn't wear glasses. Not everything is a capitalist conspiracy.

Smoking is great for your health, except for the cigarette part. Hear me out....
Why is smoking so relaxing?
When I smoked, every hour on the hour, I stepped outside, no matter what the weather, and took 10-15 deep breaths.
Inhale, slow exhale.
No matter what I was
Over thinking is the result of not knowing where to go between thoughts. It is the notion that the mind is made to think so one must fill it with thoughts constantly.
The place to go between thoughts is a deep focus on what the senses are bringing in, an exploration of the

The idea of exploring, hiking, walking, running, or traveling, while living in a state of mindfulness.
Instead of always looking for happiness or positivity, look for a neutral zone from which you can process anything. Move freely from here to feel joy that comes your way, but also to feel any other emotion. Back to neutral.

First step was quitting booze, step two was mindfulness. Realizing there's a place for our minds to go between thoughts and emotions. Observing what your senses are bringing in, no judgment.

You don't need a dedicated or quiet space to practice Mindfulness.
At first though a quiet place in nature can make it easier.
After a while bring the practice into the day to day, and harder situations.

If you don't feel like going to the gym today, skip it. Go outside, go on a hike, cook a nice meal, hang with your pets. Pick the worst weather day this week and go then. You don't need the pressure of wasting your time on a bad workout, or time on a treadmill.
