Motorway EV Charging in England
As it seems no one is actively & publicly monitoring the progress towards the government meeting its stated commitments, I’ve created this map👇
I plan to keep it updated - with your help
"There are currently 724 Teslas on UK roads with >100k on the clock, & 38 that have been driven over 200k miles
3 UK registered Model S Tesla's have now covered more than 300k miles
The highest recorded mileage of the trio has 377,989 on the clock"
“I travelled the UK and Ireland in an electric car, and what a shocker: nothing went wrong”
⚡️
“Twice we had to wait about 20 minutes for someone who was already at the point we wanted to use, but that was as dramatic as it got.”
One minute the input device for the indicators is over there
The next minute it’s over there
Even if you could manage to get used to it, why should you have to?
What about if you regularly use other, normal vehicles too?
Excellent piece from TopGear ⚡️
"What makes electric cars so fascinating is the speed of change. Whatever you knew about them is wrong. Whatever you know now will soon be wrong too."
"The vehicles' power & manoeuvrability means they're finishing around an hour earlier & are able to handle hills with full loads much better than their diesel counterparts. The team absolutely love them & don't want to go back to the diesel." ⚡️
@teslascope
@Tesla
- actually smart auto wipers
- accurate speed limit detection
- TACC adjustment in advance of detected speed limit
- quicker reversion to high beam on auto high beam
- permanent wifi-on
- faster DAB station switching
- better signal auto cancel on roundabout exit

Can confirm that Bath’s new emissions based parking charges are easy to use and seem to work as planned: you just put your numberplate into the machine and it calculates it for you.
@SaskiaHeijltjes
Off the cuff thought:
MFG is the UK EV charging network having the biggest impact on persuading non-EV drivers that a switch to an EV is possible and not too painful
How many of you have seen a 5-8 year old EV which has lost 50% of its battery capacity…?
UK Member of Parliament
@karlmccartney
thinks this happens to "most" EVs
❓Did you know.. ⚡️
In the UK, there are more open-to-all Tesla Supercharger locations (29 sites with 315 connectors) than there are :
⚡️Ionity (22 sites with 127 connectors)
⚡️Fastned (17 sites with 89 connectors)

“The Harrogate Bus Company has placed orders worth £21 million for 39 new buses (20 Mercedes eCitaro and 19 Alexander Dennis Enviro 400EV) and to equip its depot to convert its entire Harrogate fleet to fully electric power.”
@Chris_Pickering
It’d be instinctive enough for me - but there’s just no getting away from the fact it’s more effort (physically and cognitively) that just using the perfectly positioned gear selector stalk
@ItsBillN
Byorn Nyland posted a video from the passenger seat this morning. Going around roundabouts and the driver was using his other hand to push the indicators. Didn't look too great. Wonder if it will be like Apple removing the headphone jack?
'Stockholm to ban petrol and diesel cars in its city centre by 2025'
"The ban will apply to 20 blocks of Stockholm’s inner city area, spanning its office real estate & main shopping districts, where only EV traffic will be allowed from 2025"
🇸🇪
'There’s no need to fear switching to an electric car'
"we have never regretted converting to a driving experience that is comfortable, powerful in performance and, so far, blessedly fault-free"
Very good article in the Telegraph…
'Swapping to an electric vehicle could save you thousands'
"fossil-fuelled Brits seem to overestimate how often they would need to charge an EV"
🤨 Something doesn’t add up here 🤔
460 miles @ 50 mpg @ 150p/l = £62.74 or 13.6ppm
75kWh Model 3 LR @ 3.5mi/kWh @ 27p/kWh = 262 miles (real range) for £20.25 or 7.4ppm
Oh and the small matter of a 100hp supermini vs a 491hp saloon car
(& cheaper home rates possible too)
“Hundreds more rapid charging points installed in UK to help drivers go electric”
“The overall pace of charger installations has also picked up, with total charger numbers up by 23% in the first seven months of the year.”
An EV driver doing average mileage & who charges at home for 7.5p/kWh might save in the region of £1,000 per year vs a driver who charges via a lampost at 49p/kWh
This disparity never existed with petrol/diesel cars
We really don’t need any additional sources of inequality
'How Long Do EV Batteries Last? New Research Suggests It's Way Longer Than You Might Think'
'So far, it seems that EV batteries have much longer lifespans than anyone imagined, since very few of them have been replaced," the study says'
🚨 A planning application for a 26 bay EV charging hub in Birmingham has received 139 objections..
"Residents have spoken of their fear of potential explosions"
The application has been recommended for approval and will be determined on 19th October
One minute people are complaining that EVs are too expensive, and the next they are complaining that the depreciation on new EVs is too high
This is good news
(Unless perhaps you personally bought a particular EV and didn’t intend to hang on to it for a long time)
''A learner driver who failed the theory test 59 times before passing has been praised for their "amazing" commitment'
Sorry, but no – if you can’t pass a basic & mostly common sense multiple choice test in, say, 5 attempts then no licence for you
"I have a confession to make: I have an electric car. And what’s worse is that I love it"
"..my experience..has been seamless and faultless.."
"I needed a new car and could get one via my employer’s salary sacrifice car leasing scheme"
Ben Wilkinson, The Telegraph

Further to the tweet below, I submitted my own FOI request to the DVSA
There are 1,726 EVs on UK roads with >100k on the clock, & 377 have been driven over 150k miles
6 UK Model 3s have now done >150k miles
The highest recorded mileage of a UK Model 3 is 175,299 ⚡️

And yet common sense remains common sense
I’d argue, given the cyclist is riding very close and in a likely blindspot for a while beforehand, & has admitted he thought the driver looked lost, that the cyclist is potentially guilty of cycling with due care and attention
'Banbury: How are electric car chargers changing?'
"…there are a small but growing number of these large hubs.
This is what will gradually replace petrol stations - row upon row of places to plug in your car"
BBC News
So… found myself contemplating (semi-seriously) swapping our 18 month old, 30k mile Model 3 RWD LFP for a used BMW i3s…
The Model 3 is probably worth about £30k tops
An i3s with about 40k miles with good spec (ACC; CarPlay; HK) is probably about £17k
“Not sure if you’ve heard…but there’s a lot of chargers out there which claim to be 120 or even 150 kW but if you’re driving a 400 V car are actually only going to do 80 or 100 kW, max….& yet the price you pay is the same..”
⚡️ Existing EV drivers - what would you say are the 3 biggest pros & cons of owning & driving an EV?
🤔
Mine:
Pro
- refuel at home
- less guilt from driving (£ & 🌍)
- daily driving characteristics
Con
- reduced flexibility
- less involving drive
- charging in some regions
Unpopular opinion - if you own a dog (any dog) it should be on a (short) lead anywhere in public.
If it’s a breed that needs space to exercise off-lead, then you should have access to appropriate private land, or dedicated dog exercise spaces.
Free consumer advice:
If you go out and buy the EV with basically the smallest battery on the market, don’t then be surprised if the range isn’t amazing, and don’t then denounce EVs on the basis that you had to stop and charge on a longer journey
Model 3 refresh
Stuff people wanted and didn’t get
- matrix headlights
- power frunk
- HUD
- V2L
- hatchback
VS
Stuff people didn’t ask for but got anyway
- more speakers
- ambient lighting
- rear screen
- one less USB port
- stalk delete
🤦♂️
@DCCNevKemp

@SurreyRoadCops
Great work.
We do also need a massive crackdown on lane discipline though - the middle lane hogging epidemic is becoming ridiculous these days.
Fixing that will in turn require a crackdown on following distances.
Pretty alright Model 3 LFP charging curve on 250A limited MFG “150kW” CirControl charger
11-79% at an average of 81kW
For context, best similar Supercharging sessions I’ve seen have an average of 100-105kW
A few people would like me to stop talking about the removal of the indicator stalk.
So, about the drive selector stalk…
That’s another idiotic decision, which only makes things worse.
(You could still have the option for predictive drive/reverse selection with a stalk too)
