My top travel tip for France is - when in need of a solid meal, find a 'kebab' restaurant and order an assiette (plate). You'll get a lot more salad and protein than you would in a café 'meal', for the same price or less. And the people are universally very friendly.

I used to work in a fairly tough factory. There was a long-standing dint in a wall where some bloke had punched it after he was sacked. If anyone asked about it they were told his story and what an unpleasant and untrustworthy bloke he was. Male violence is not popular anywhere.

Best pub I ever went to was in the UK where there was a mix of long-term locals and students. Packed most nights. When everyone was pretty cheerful, the owner would often play his fave old songs, loud, and most people were singing along or dancing. Hooking up wasn't on my mind.
