As a Christian, one of the things I find hardest about this new incarnation of Twitter is that it seems to bring out the worst in us as Christians. A big reason for this is tied to the concept of "freedom of speech." 🧵

@flork56782207 Understood. But to me? Borders will always matter less than people.

@flork56782207 It's the cyclical nature of history: in times of crisis on a global scale, we hunker down. We've been in economic and cultural crisis since 2008. The world's been in crisis - as indicated by the growing numbers of refugees.

@flork56782207 We're... kind of proposing the same thing, in a way, then. Except I'd say begin by creating the resettlement schemes, and then work to stop the boats. Start by figuring out how we will do our part.

@flork56782207 (I do not just believe this is true of us, incidentally; every decent nation shuld be striving to do its part. That we're all so reluctant to do so says how far we've fallen as a race, frankly.)

@flork56782207 So we do nothing, and it all just gets worse anyway. Nah.

@flork56782207 I've been thinking about this for a while, and I think there's a reason; it's because of my faith. I'm a Christian, and believe human beings have the potential for eternity. Nations don't. Therefore a single human life is of inestimably greater value than any nation or border.

@flork56782207 Small boats make an interesting example. Why are people coming via small boats? Because they're desperate and other routes have been closed. So the solution imo? Create safe routes, ones you maintain and control, ones with - yes - set numbers.

@flork56782207 I would note we seem to have a very strange opinion of refugees; we perceive people as "burdens" (and, yes, I used the word "weight" too). That said, you've highlighted the main issue for me: nobody wants to actually do anything, so there is no international agreement.

@flork56782207 (So, for example, with multilateral schemes and so on that ensure refugees are distributed and no one nation bears a weight that is unbearable.)

@flork56782207 Tbh? My reaction to the news is that I couldn't care less about the technicalities. I'm just glad another family is safe.
