Wow, I told REI that I was cancelling an order because of their union-busting and the customer service rep sent me their whole union-busting website. They suck so much.
Not deeply saddened enough to actually say the truth that the dog was killed by overheating after being left alone in a squad car. Not even a pledge to get to the bottom of it and accountability for what would is an animal cruelty and neglect crime. This tweet is gross.
We are deeply saddened by today's passing of MPD K9 Rocket.
We thank and honor Rocket for his seven years of service and for keeping District residents safe.
Out today with school nurses asking to have their voices heard in school reopening. Fourth District officers threatened this crowd with arrest unless they dispersed.
@NursesHealDC
With DC commuter rail and Metro ridership still far below pre-pandemic levels, the ABP branch has gone dark at Union Station, joining the adjacent cafe and former H&M store, closed since the pandemic, and the more recently shuttered Starbucks. This whole front hall is now vacant.
When ppl look at DC, they see the U Street & say they want to live there bc of the amenities, such as access to Metro, grocery stores & good schools. My job is to make sure that every neighborhood, especially those east of the Anacostia River, has that.
FYI for all those people insisting making $250,000 a year in taxable income as an individual is not wealthy, the median black household income in DC is $46,201.
We received tons of positive feedback on our digital billboards. Many more to come helping educate residents on the impacts of
@charlesallen
and the unmitigated disaster created by his policies of protecting criminals and demonizing cops.
Public school students in the District of Columbia are 90% people of color. When you look at this picture, what do you see? What do you think? What do you wonder?
Much appreciation to my bus driver this morning who handed out masks to those without and has a 100% masking rate on the bus because of it. Done from a non-confrontational position of helping people.
How many people have been killed by scooters in the last week in DC? Because there have been multiple people killed by cars and yet
@DCPoliceDept
isn't cracking down there and, in fact, is downplaying their deaths. This is just racism and classism by
@MurielBowser
In 3 days since
@DCPoliceDept
began crackdown on unregistered scooters
167 scooters impounded
61 people arrested for no permit
172 notice of infractions issued.
@nbcwashington
Listen, street paintings are nice but
@MayorBowser
is proposing cuts to every non-police violence prevention program in the city and a 3% increase in the police budget in a city that already has the most cops per capita.
Love that there is actually research specific to DC showing that curfew enforcement made violence worse and the police chief is like, no facts just vibes.
D.C. police have quietly started reinforcing the city’s juvenile curfew, picking up 16 people for violations since August 1.
The news comes as Prince George’s County made waves by vowing to crack down on its own curfew.

Even more depressing than the loss of self-determination by DC residents is how our top local leaders aided and abetted it. They've set our quest for equal representation and our full rights as Americans back decades through their pettiness and stupidity.
I'm always really confused about the need to introduce new legislation when there are things you can just DO as Mayor to fix it. Functioning crime lab? COMPLETELY SOMETHING YOU CAN DO. Working 911 center? TOTALLY WITHIN YOUR POWER.
We need to act now, and we need to send the strong message that violence is not acceptable in our city and this perception that people have, that you can commit a brazen crime and get away with it, has got to stop.

@MayorBowser
. You can't point the finger. The Council made this activity illegal. The federal agencies weren't involved. No one but you and your crew.
Police charge at protesters to move them out of the area. They’ve detonated at least 8 stun grenades so far and used chemical irritant. You can see an officer shoving protester to the ground here:
One block north, the H street bus lane completely filled with parked vehicles. I wonder if more Metro riders would benefit if they redirected a couple officers here.
Just throwing this out since it doesn't seem to figure in these discussions: a driver with $12k in paid fines is as dangerous as one with $12k in unpaid fines (actually probably more due to escalation on unpaid fines), but never seems to figure in these discussions.
Recently, we’ve talked a lot about drivers involved in crashes racking up a slew of tickets they never pay.
Well, I submitted a FOIA request to find out just how many unpaid tickets
#DC
saw last year.
Turns out, it was millions.
@wusa9
My favorite part of the whole thing was the announcement by
@_DCHealth
that they were stopping test distribution at libraries and them saying you can get them at COVID centers still don't worry, knowing full well they were announcing that shut down a few days later.
I have a middle school boy. I was a middle school boy. I absolutely broke the law and I'm sure my son will screw up too. I also don't believe in killing kids for their mistakes and I am heartbroken that anyone would justify it. Like it's impossible to read about even.
Not my wisest move, but I definitely expressed my displeasure to the March for Life attendees who boarded my train car unmasked this morning while I was taking my child that is too young to be vaccinated to school in a KN-95 he will wear all day. March for his Life? Evidently not
There was a police officer in front of school during drop off this morning sitting in his car... Parked in the drop off area so that kids were having to be dropped off in the street.
DC is open, but everyone at the office of the chief champion of forcing you back in person is working from home today (not a soul in sight). Pretty hypocritical.
It is worth noting that it is illegal to drive a truck down this stretch of 17th and
@DCPoliceDept
is continuing their ongoing practice of not enforcing the law if you're a white supremacist.
DCPS daily substitute teachers will now earn $136.00/day ($17.00/hour). With this increase in pay, we’re focused on bolstering supports for schools and creating pathways for educators to become long-term substitutes.

Fellow white parents, we have to be willing to talk about the role race plays in our school system and how it drives decisions, resources and even reopening. If we can't do that we really aren't anywhere at all. It's not divisive, it's acknowledging reality.
Bowser asked the council for $11 million to increase the size of DC’s police force. Council members want to spend some of that money on alternatives to police instead. Stay tuned tomorrow, when they must pass the budget.
Murdering anyone for stealing a car isn't "taking justice into their hands" - it's just murder and framing it this way is part of the subtle justification, like how the police are framing the shooter as a "homeowner".
I've heard from Brookland residents about safety concerns and am eager to address those with focus and intentionality as Councilmember. I also have deep concerns about neighbors taking justice into their own hands.
ALERT: As part of the investigation into the Blue Line derailment, Metro is holding out of service all of its 7000-series railcars, which is about 60% of its rail fleet. Without these rail cars, Metro will operate about 40 trains tomorrow. 1/2
Hey maybe we don't attack child victims of traffic violence by name in the pages of the 6th largest paper in the nation or maybe the paper should not publish it. Just a suggestion.
🚧🚧🚧You see this bus? Don't board this bus!🚧🚧🚧
You need the extra dollar for the difference between Metro and Circulator and I'll Venmo you a $1. It's not worth it to cross the line.
Just watched the coffee shop in the *social justice hotel" turn away someone trying to buy breakfast because they wanted to pay cash. Didn't we outlaw this shit?
A takeaway clearly from someone who doesn't live in the area. There are cops sitting here all the time - both regular, truancy and school. The issue is they don't get out of their cars or off their phones, but it doesn't fit neatly into right-wing Chevy Chase talking points.
Heartbreaking. This certainly is not safe passage. We’re struggling to get attendance rates to pre pandemic levels. This certainly does not help. The more I think about the rise in juvenile crime and related school incidents, no alternative safety structure in place, the more I’m

Starting Wednesday, March 16 -- and consistent with the latest health guidance and the current low levels in DC -- masks will be optional for students, staff, and visitors in DC Public Schools, DCPS offices, and on OSSE-DOT transportation.
Small favor DC drivers: when I'm riding with my 9 year old, please don't pull up behind us and lay on the horn over and over again. 3 times today on different streets with different drivers, all posted for bike travel. Like just give us a break and let us enjoy the day.
MPD's $16 million for overtime is part of a $70.7M overall reprogramming request. These are the agencies losing over half a million dollars in this request from the Mayor:
First of all boomer: you're misusing the meme. The way you have it formatted implies I hate murder (correct) and like double parking (not correct).
Second of all: none of these pictures are double parking, they are just illegal parking.
Third of all: Only some laws matter?
As a white man of no particular qualification, I will tell you in this essay how you as a preeminent black male educator and elected leader, are wrong about racism in education.
I hate the framing that only the high-performing students deserve a world-class facility. All our kids deserve world-class facility, something that's been sorely lacking in our policy.
Last weekend, I celebrated the opening of the new Banneker High School; a world-class facility for some of the District’s highest performing students.
Thank you Banneker for your advocacy, and community members, for helping us get this project to the finish line!
My kids also got upset they couldn't have the vodka freezie pops they sell at Costco because they look like other freezie pops. Just like I've done with canned mixed cocktails in bright containers I say, they aren't juice, they aren't for kids and we move on. It's routine.
What purpose does having the last day of school fall on a Monday do other than to punish every family, student and teacher for sticking with

this year? It feels deliberate like

👇A family of Republican operatives who worked hard to ensure that these high-powered guns are on our streets. She should check in with her husband's boss John Cornyn and ask why he supports less control and lower penalties for shootings like this in DC.

Masks work and good masks work even better. But I've lately been contact by several constituents concerned about the quality of masks distributed by

@DCPoliceDept
and I'm sharing them here. Left is from a DC distribution center, right is from a reputable retailer.
We're concerned about the 7:00 p.m. Election Day curfew announced by

@Erinfor4B02
and I are urging her to immediately move the curfew to 8:30 p.m. to allow for turnout, especially in communities of color. We need to preserve our "precious and almost sacred" right.

Yes clearly one entrance should be Ft Knox and there should be no other officers anywhere else. Brilliant commentary, sir.
I remember 5 chancellors in my 4th graders life. I remember being lied to about lead in the water and begging for elevators. I remember that Ward 3 is still the only Ward with all renovated schools and staffed with school psychiatrists, while EOTR schools have no librarians.
Rare bit of good news Friday!
@DDOTDC
is beginning preliminary engineering on the final stage of the Metropolitan Branch Trail from Blair Road to the Eastern Avenue segment that was built this year. Cannot wait for this to finally be a reality.
I'm in an melancholy mood. After 12+ years fighting for food workers, my last day at the UFCW was yesterday. I'm excited about my new job (more about that later), but I don't think you can spend that amount of time invested in the cause and not have mixed feelings upon leaving.
Or ya'know, you could just pay it and move on and chalk it up to not being a big deal on a six figure salary. Little demonstration of "we're all in this together" social solidarity, like returning a shopping cart.
There's no evidence that juvenile curfews or curfew enforcement works, but it's politically convenient to target youth of color as a political strategy, especially since they can't vote. But the question reporters should ask is where resources are being taken from to do this?

Hi
@wmataGM
@MetroTransitPD
these officers used their emergency lights to make an illegal U turn, pull into a bus stop blocking it, almost backing into a bus servicing the stop so they could go to Wawa.
NEW: Declining revenue estimates show D.C. won’t have enough to fund free Metro bus program, according to chief financial officer.
“The expansion of remote work, coupled with higher interest rates, pose a serious long-term risk to the District’s economy and its tax base.”
If you are based in DC and are tweeting about how we just keep schools open at all costs because children need it and they will get lost and you were silent during the closing of Washington Met (or supported it), you're full of shit.
Ranked choice voting is too confusing, but it's not too confusing to ask every sleep-deprived DC parent of a toddler to rank order 12 schools out of 132 options in a lottery for school? 🤔🤔🤔
To the D.C. ranked choice voting advocates:
We heard consistently from voters that they felt overwhelmed by all the choices in the at-large field and many just didn't want to deal with it. Wouldn't ranked choice voting make it feel even more complicated?
Really struggling with the
@dcpublicschools
@DCPSChancellor
decision to cancel all covid testing in schools yesterday and today. Why wouldn't you want those with the fewest resources to have some certainty as they go to their families? What if you stopped a gathering?
Just to be clear: it was ruled that
@MayorBowser
and team broke DC law in this process and it's not on the union, it's on the law breaker.
And I don't know why this is coming from the Deputy Mayor of Economic Development unless the motivation isn't education but something else.
To be clear: DCPS surveyed teachers to take into account their needs/preferences
The union then blocked DCPS from being able to use it to make classroom assignments
If DCPS could have used the survey, in person learning would have started on Nov 9 for families who chose it
Great wings. An affordable hotel for families touring our city. Soon to be gone!
@councilofdc
ignored all public safety & business experts by defunding
@DCPoliceDept
, allowing shoplifting to go unpunished, & crushing our small business with a constant stream of new costs. (1/3)
This is just factually incorrect. DC has the highest number of police per cap for any major city with only MPD and the DCHA police and excluding USSS, USCP, USPP, MTPD and more. People can disagree, but we can't have our own made-up facts.
@nathanlukeylu
@SDPearson

The overall number of public safety personnel that is often cited for DC ignores the fact that many are protecting exclusively federal property. DC residents want 4,000 police officers again at

OUC just caused a 36 MINUTE delay in a medical response, yet you reappointed a director with a history of being unable to run the agency effective. It seems like you're less about getting people the help they need and more about scoring political points.

Ummmm. Why is the person who runs the DC Democrats ALSO posting for a "Members First" (Read Privatizer backed if I was a betting woman) ad for the Chicago Teachers Union elections? Doesn't seem super grassroots to me. Watch out CTU, DC's privatizers are apparently coming for you
This mindless cheerleading is just wrong. Colorado started mailing rapid test kids to any person in the state who wanted one in late September. They distributed more than a million tests before you were waiting in line at the library for the DC program to start.
A lot of DC residents are going to PooPoo the Districts response to COVID vis-a-vis testing, but we are the leaders in the US for distributing rapid tests which are the only tests that matter in this final phase
there are about 100 people here supporting a new Chevy Chase library with affordable housing, chanting “if not here, where? if not now, when?”
in response, CC residents are yelling “never!”, “somewhere else!” and “this will make it look like Anacostia!”
Got a note from my son's preschool teacher about the asymptomatic covid testing. They try to test 25% of the students every week, but they have never had a student produce enough saliva. That means we're ~2 months into the school year, there's never been one test in that class.
