NEWS: D.C.'s homicide toll has reached 200 before October for the first time in a quarter-century.
The milestone is a mark of surging violence that has drawn scrutiny from Congress & made some residents question if they can safely live in Washington.
Paul Gillespie walked toward the memorial made up of five columns, one for each of his colleagues murdered at their local newspaper exactly three years ago today.
He paused.
“I was almost the sixth column that day.”

A judge just overturned his conviction "in the interest of justice" and ordered his shackles removed.
Police just told us that the officer who fired the shots was an off-duty FBI special agent assigned to headquarters.
The incident began when the now-deceased man assaulted the officer on the Glenmont platform, according to D.C. police.
A federal officer fatally shot a person this evening on a Red Line train platform at the Metro Center station.
