Opinion: WMATA will need new Metrorail lines and stations that fill gaps in the existing network, combined with great service, to make the Washington region transit-first, writes
@NSementelli
. Part 9 in a series:
After many years and many, many, many crashes, we FINALLY HAVE A 4-WAY STOP AT FARRAGUT ST. & ILLINOIS AVE. NW!!!!!! I am very proud of this moment right now.
A reminder today that of the 75+ full-service grocery stores in the District, only 4 are currently located in the parts of Wards 7 and 8 east of the Anacostia River, where more than 1 out of every 5 DC residents live. Wards 1 & 4 now have 13 and 12, respectively.

“Metro will mount automated cameras on buses serving select routes in DC. […] Metro anticipates that the Clear Lanes project will be ready to roll out in Fall 2023, with a 45-day warning period beginning July 24, 2023.”
Blocked bus lanes slow down everyone, forcing buses to merge & navigate around. With the Clear Lanes initiative,
@DDOTDC
&
@WMATA
aim to improve travel times with camera enforcement to ticket illegal vehicles in dedicated bus lanes. To learn more, visit .
If we want to revitalize downtown D.C., we need to consistently activate our outdoor public spaces! That means closing off roadways for markets, dining, music, and entertainment! People will come here from across the region for that!
A reminder of how shitty it is that pedestrians and cyclists are forced to use the extremely narrow sidewalk in the 1,000-foot Beach Drive NW tunnel because the
@NationalZoo
continues to shutdown access to the Zoo Loop Trail at *5pm* between Sept. 15 - March 15! Super dangerous
NEW VIDEO- A man is still recovering after crashing that white van into a D.C. ambulance that was responding to an emergency call on Georgia Avenue.

Pretty astounding to see that the highest median household income for a census tract in DC is $250,001 (in Ward 3 [Palisades/Spring Valley]) and $14,413 (in Ward 8 [Anacostia/Barry Farm]), a 17+ fold difference! Here’s the full map:

DC is finally going to receive the additional $755 million owed to us from the CARES Act back in the spring of 2020 (in addition to a new tranche of $1.492 billion in State and Local Coronavirus Relief Funds)! Thank you

A child was struck by a driver this morning right in front of Truesdell Elementary during dropoff on the 800 Block of Ingraham St. NW. Fortunately, the injuries are non-life threatening. We’ve asked
@DDOTDC
for speed humps and making this a 1-way street, among other safety fixes.
A reminder that the 700,000 people of the District of Columbia have absolutely no say in who gets confirmed to serve for life on the Supreme Court of the United States.

Looks like $20 million is on its way in FY22 RAISE grant funding to create a new bicycle-pedestrian bridge that crosses the Potomac River between Long Bridge Park in Arlington, VA and East and West Potomac Parks in the District!
In the span of 24 seconds, *7 cars* (including a Secret Service Police cruiser) didn’t yield to me as I walked across Georgia Avenue at Farragut Street NW! We desperately need
@DDOTDC
to install traffic calming and pedestrian safety infrastructure at this intersection ASAP!
DDOT just closed out my TSI request for Farragut St. & Georgia Ave. NW with the following comments: “DDOT has initiated a larger study of the traffic operations at this intersection. The recommendations from that study will be advanced following completion.”
The updated House GOP rules package for the 118th Congress “strikes language providing Governors of Territories and the Mayor of the District of Columbia access to the Hall of the House.” See here:

Over half (50.7%) of the 286 incumbent ANCs aren’t running for re-election in 2022. Would love for someone in the District government to at least attempt to understand why 145 commissioners are stepping down, for the sake of the institution of ANCs and welfare of commissioners.
This is the budget for the Oct. 1 Georgia Ave.
@openstreetsdc
event! Kinda insane that *47.8%* of it was for MPD, primarily to sit in their vehicles for 7+ hours blocking off every cross street. Would much rather DDOT invest in bollards & hold more events in Ward 4! H/t
@Santi4DC
Today, stand with me in support of our downtown.
The K Street Transitway means more safety, more reliability, less congestion, and better motorist experiences in the heart of our downtown.

BREAKING: source tells me that
@DDOTDC
new Connecticut Ave proposal DOES NOT include bike lanes.
Meeting set to begin at 6:30 tonight.
Bike advocates furious.
@wusa9
Amazing how many young voters I know in DC who have “No Party” as their political affiliation, which prevents them from voting in the upcoming closed June 21 Democratic primary! DC voters can change their party affiliation to Democratic until May 31:
We need MPD officers to be engaged in our communities via walking and biking, not just sitting in their vehicle for hours on end, which still happens daily at the southeast corner of 7th & Kennedy Streets NW.
Found out today at
#bikebus
that
@DCPoliceDept
disbanded the Community Focused Patrol Unit that used to help get us to school safely. That unit was announced just 2 years ago with much fanfare from
@MayorBowser
and Chief Contee.
This is an appreciation tweet for
@charlesallen
, who’s an amazing DC Councilmember and Chair of the Committee on Transportation and the Environment! The people of the District are lucky to have him serve in our legislative body.
So who wants to help collect 25,000 signatures to get an RCV initiative on the ballot, so we can finally change the current arcane system we have for electing people to office with only a plurality of the vote?!
Glad to see
@OPinDC
propose a “Gallery Place Festival Plaza” as part of its “Downtown DC Public Realm Plan”! A year-round market on F & G Sts. between 7th/9th Sts. NW, coupled with traffic calming on 8th St. “to create a space for people and play” is good!
If we want to revitalize downtown D.C., we need to consistently activate our outdoor public spaces! That means closing off roadways for markets, dining, music, and entertainment! People will come here from across the region for that!
We’re now at a voter turnout rate of 32.6% for DC’s June 21 Democratic primary, which is several points higher than both the 2014 and 2018 DC Dem primaries. Perhaps this whole automatic sending of mail-in ballots to all registered voters is a positive thing!
76.5% of Ward 7 Democratic voters who participated in the June 4 primary selected someone other than the winner, who will now represent Ward 7 for the next 4 years (if not multiple terms).
If only there was a system where voters could express preferences for other candidates…
The problem is that the vast majority of DC residents don’t watch DC Council legislative meetings and thus, will never fully grasp the full level of dysfunction that was on display today. What a shame.
Just outright open hostility in response to a basic question about whether or not the Mayor is abiding by District law or not (re: not paying interim directors after they’ve been on the job more than 180 days)…
I just asked Bowser about her interim director for the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection, who has been in an interim capacity since at least Oct. 1. City law requires interim directors can’t be paid beyond 180 days, but Bowser said her interim director is.
There was a Democratic primary election on June 7, 2022 and a general election on November 8, 2022 for Ward 1 and Ward 6 Councilmember. These people could have run against CMs Nadeau and Allen but they didn’t, probably because they knew they couldn’t win.
2 DC residents filed paperwork today to recall Ward 1 councilmember

I may take the Silver line out to the new Ashburn Metrorail station on November 15! Anyone recommend anything cool to check out walking distance from any of the six new Silver line stations?
Please throw some funds to the family of Zy'aire Joshua, a 4-year old pre-K student who attended Truesdell Elementary in 4D04 and was killed by a driver at Georgia Ave. & Kennedy St. yesterday.
On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, it’s important to remember that the Nacotchtank tribe lived in present-day DC. They had about 300 members in the early 1600s:
Just learned that there is currently ONE person at DDOT whose job is to process Traffic Safety Assessment/Investigation paperwork for the ENTIRE District! 🤦♂️
After exactly 1 year of purchasing my electric cargo bike, I’ve ridden it a total of 1,192 miles! It’s truly been a game changer for how I actively transport myself and my kids around the District! Here’s to the next 1,192 miles! 🚲🚲🚲
While their is no Speaker currently (and thus, any legislative activity is stalled on the House floor), the 30-day congressional review period for bills passed by the DC Council & signed (or unsigned) by the Mayor continues onward while the House GOP can't vote to block DC bills!
The U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia just told the DC Council this morning that the DC Crime Lab’s loss of accreditation is a significant issue hindering his ability to pursue and then win cases in court. Own your failures
@MayorBowser
and take some responsibility.

Wouldn’t be surprised if 30+ members of the 51-member Senate Democratic Caucus vote to nullify the District’s RCCA next week. What a complete and total travesty.
Sen. Patty Murray, the president pro tempore of the Senate, told me that she will align herself with Biden's stance and back a repeal of DC’s new crime law.
"I absolutely respect that decision," Murray said about Biden and added: "I'll be voting the same way the president is."
@erinfordc
ran a phenomenal campaign for DC Council Chair and we are all better off for it. Really proud to have volunteered for her and looking forward to the road ahead. Onward!
Never thought I'd hear ANC elections referenced in testimony before the House Rules Committee, but here we are...
Also, thank you
@RepRaskin
for being among the strongest defenders of Home Rule and the people of the District of Columbia!
I have some bittersweet news to share: I have decided NOT to run for re-election as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for Single Member District 4D04 this November. It's been an honor representing the 2,200 residents who call 4D04 home, but it's time to pass on the baton. 1/9
Still beaming from the fact that Salah Czapary, Eric Goulet, and Vincent Orange won’t be serving on the Council of the District of the Columbia any time soon.
In e-bike rebate news, the “Electric Bicycle Rebate Program Amendment Act of 2023” is set to be effective beginning Dec. 1, 2023, which means that any eligible purchases made *beginning December 2, 2023* can receive a rebate from DDOT once the program goes live! 🚲🚲🚲
@WABADC
@MayorBowser
signed
@CMCharlesAllen
’s “Electric Bicycle Rebate Program Amendment Act of 2023” (B25-115) on October 11! Now onward to the 30-day congressional review period (where hopefully, no GOP members try to nullify this legislation)!

A great letter from
@MatthewFrumin
to
@MayorBowser
making the case for keeping PBLs as part of the Connecticut Avenue Multimodal Safety Improvement project! Thank you CM Frumin! 🚲🚲🚲
“In the long term, D.C. should be more aggressive in implementing new road designs — narrower lanes, bike lanes and other traffic-calming elements. Anything that will signal to drivers that the road is not a racetrack."
Exciting news for Ward 4 and 5 residents!
“

@petworthdcnews
@CMLewisGeorgeW4
I don’t think Kershbaum should be confirmed. If she is sending Ward 3 bike lanes and the moveDC network back to the drawing board, the DC Council should send the search for a permanent DDOT Director back to the drawing board too. Vote down her nomination by September 22, 2024!
This is a big move for an interim agency director whose appointment still needs Council approval. Which in turn seems like an opportunity for Matthew Frumin to give Kershbaum some feedback for screwing him over
Holy moly, I just got word from

It’s disappointing to hear the news of the mayoral primary results, but I’m proud to have volunteered for Robert White, and applaud him for putting his hat in the ring to give voters another path forward for the District.
“‘DDOT's clearly set on building a highway on Connecticut Ave. It's a bad idea,’ Allen told Axios in a statement. ‘This isn't a safety project anymore.’”
A big congrats to
@DDOTDC
for winning a *$25 million* FY24 RAISE grant award for the New York Avenue Bridge and Lincoln Connector Trail Project, one of only 148 awards nationwide! A huge win for Ward 5 and DC!
@CMZParker5
@charlesallen
Extremely disappointing response from
@MayorBowser
on this. We need
@DDOTDC
to finally implement Concept C for the Connecticut Avenue Multimodal Safety Improvement Project after many, many years. The buck stops with the Mayor on this one!
Sorry to share but
@MayorBowser
has lost her courage on Connecticut Avenue bike lanes - unless
@CMFrumin
finds his courage the Avenue is just going to continue being a traffic sewer for MD commuters. So much for Vision Zero & being a world class city.
The reality is that the
@wmata
Board members who represent Virginia and Maryland don’t want to support free buses in the District (paid for with our own tax $$$) because it would inspire residents in their own jurisdictions to demand the same thing from their political leaders!
Almost no one with whom I spoke — residents or candidates — about the Ward 4 DC Council race believed the incumbent, Janeese Lewis George, has properly addressed crime in the ward.
Will be very interesting to see which DC-related House GOP policy riders make it into the final FY24 FSGG spending bill that needs to pass by Feb. 2. We need
@SenSchumer
,
@RepJeffries
, and
@POTUS
to push back and ensure these riders don’t survive as part of the final deal!
What to watch:
- There is no deal on the dozens and dozens of policy riders that often accompany these talks.
- Schumer is laying out a hard no to any policy changes in this doc.
- But conservatives will likely still push.
- We'll see. Even if easy, this takes time.
Mayor Bowser is responsible for ensuring the District ultimately achieves Vision Zero. The DDOT Director, DPW Director, and Deputy Mayor for Operations & Infrastructure literally all report to her.
My DC Councilmember today introduced the Lemonade Stand Amendment Act of 2019 (even though it’s already legal for kids in DC to sell lemonade without first obtaining a business license/permit), but he voted against removing Jack Evans from all his committee assignments...
Congratulations to
@Janeese4DC
for winning two-thirds of the vote in the Ward 4 Councilmember Democratic primary!! Totally crushed it! Can’t wait to see her represent Ward 4 for the next 4 years on the DC Council!
Truly unacceptable that so many bike lanes in the District are completely iced over, 72 hours after it snowed! Cyclists are also road users and the public ROW needs to be safe for this type of transportation! 🚲🚲🚲
Happy one-year anniversary of
@Janeese4DC
defeating the previous 5-year incumbent by 11.69 percentage points in the June 2, 2020 Ward 4 Councilmember Democratic primary!
Or how about we require DDOT to install permanent infrastructure to make the adjacent streets near our schools safer so that we don’t have to “encourage” drivers to do the right thing?
I just watched footage of this incident from a constituent’s Nest cameras and it’s incredibly disturbing. The driver did a rolling stop and then proceeded to speed through the intersection while two pedestrians were already walking in the crosswalk. I’m fucking livid.
This is in my SMD 4D04–I hope this child is doing okay. It’s a 4-way stop and we just got speed tables on both blocks of Illinois Ave. NW leading to this intersection. Drivers need to slow down, fully stop at this intersection, and pay attention so that this never happens again.
“But close court-watchers know that every time this Supreme Court waves the flag of stability, it does so on behalf of Trump and his allies. Anderson’s bottom-line outcome is certainly defensible. But the rest of it serves as an unwarranted gift to Donald Trump”
John Roberts had the chance to unite the Supreme Court behind a unanimous declaration that states can't unilaterally remove presidential candidates from the ballot.
Instead he went MUCH further, dismantled the insurrection clause, and produced a 5–4 mess.
This is an appreciation tweet for all the ANC commissioners who work extremely hard but rarely receive acknowledgement and/or credit for their work. Y’all know who you are.
Elizabeth Warren told me she opposes GOP resolution to block DC crime law. “I believe in DC home rule, because the provisions of the crime bill are sensible and in line with where the majority of states are in America, and third, because DC is trying to withdraw the bill”
We’re on track to elect four members of the DC Council and the new Attorney General with between 37.7% and 47.4% in each of their respective races.
We needed ranked choice voting yesterday.
A cyclist just got hit by a driver on Grant Circle NW - we need
@DDOTDC
to quickly approve their proposed traffic safety changes here, including taking away nearly all on-street parking spaces on the circle. Lives matter more than parking!
@Janeese4DC
@CMLewisGeorgeW4
@WABADC
What DDOT is proposing at Grant Circle is a BFD and has literally been years in the making! While not perfect, we’re going to need as much support from the community next year to get this over the finish line and actually make this circle significantly safer for all road users!
“‘The mayor and her folks are basically now conceding that the main purpose [of the traffic cameras] is for revenue, not for making our streets safer,’ said Zach Israel, a resident of Petworth and a traffic safety advocate.”
District government leadership needs to prioritize the transfer of our federally-owned small, local neighborhood parks to DPR. These spaces will continue to be neglected as long as there’s no direct accountability.
