I grew up Catholic in the '50s and '60s. We had a big, beautiful Catholic Bible, and we were encouraged to read it.
I still have it. I inherited it from my parents.
My husband also grew up Catholic. He still has his Saint Joseph's Bible from his childhood.

This is why I could never be Orthodox. Yes, I am fully persuaded by the Biblical & Patristic arguments for the papacy. But even more, I am persuaded by the universality of the Catholic Church. We have both West & East (and North & South). I could never give up my precious saints!

Italy is Western Civilization Central. Every town seems to have its own exquisite church or crypt or cathedral. It's Art History 101 from one end to the other and beyond.
In Italy you can just swing in for Vigil Mass at a little place like this. There are two larger churches nearby including the cathedral. Crazy what our backwards ancestors could cook up.
