@HowSenChong Thanks for this thoughtful thread. This tragic incident might well have happened even if the driver wasn't intoxicated (though the could have been contributory). There were several factors, including the Jeep, the cycling infrastructure and the driver passing on the right.

@SwannMarcus89 A lot of it has to do with various environmental reviews and land acquisition costs. The land for the transcontinental railway was taken from Native Americans by force and deception. Financing the railroad was pretty wild as well. It was transformative as well.

@SelfMadeMastery I think most Americans like capitalism. Those who don’t are likely underperforming their peers, work in relatively economically protected academic areas, or don’t like change. The rest of us like the ability to work as hard as we want to reach the life we want.

@DoctorJack16 I am super conflicted. I really like my Tesla and FSD. SpaceX is a strategic benefit to the US. But his support for Trump makes no sense to me at all. Many of my friends worry about his influence, given his vast wealth. Great man, with some serious flaws, like Henry Ford.

It’s not for everyone, but I recall it as the best job in my life. What’s great about the US is we support multiple job environments. Not for everyone, but best for some.

@user29_unknown @LibertyCappy The way they present the value of the winnings is misleading. They add up the sum of annual payments over twenty years, assuming that most buyers don’t understand the time value of money. Lump sum is much smaller. With state taxes, you might lose 50% of that.

@jasonfurman It's an interesting read, and shows that the proposal isn't stupid, as some have claimed. I still think it's problematic, adds friction to capital markets, and I suspect it would not raise that much revenue. A more focused proposal, taxing loans against stock, makes more sense.

@arctechinc I agree with you. The article makes some good points. I support Elon’s desire for a public square for multiple viewpoints, but it isn’t working that way now. If he does fix it, it could help his car company as well. People are generally forgiving in this country if he fixes it.

There are others, like height restrictions, but these have a big impact on the neighborhood and make more sense.

@compsciman @EpiEllie We never were able to manufacture enough of those tests to make this feasible. Due to asymptomatic spread, we probably needed in excess of 100M rapid tests per day. And we’d still need to support people if they tested positive to get high compliance.

@WholeMarsBlog A quick in-my-head estimate suggests you need to drive around 10,000 miles on superchargers for this to be a good deal. Depends on the supercharger electricity rate and how you drive. This locks in the FSD cost for 3 years, which may or may not be a win.
