I've moved back home to Jamaica to support the mission of building a world class pan-Caribbean financial ecosystem at NCB. I'll do this in my role as Head of Digital and Design. Feel free to tag me when our products fail you, I won't always be able to help, but I'm working on it.
Not me finding out that Constant Spring is so named due to the spring that flows through the area that historically has never run dry, hence the name, Constant.Spring.
It's hard to realise the impact crime has on your life in JA until you leave. What are some things that put you on high alert here that wouldn't make sense in other countries?
Alright so I just got my first JPS bill. 3 bedroom house, what should I be expecting? Because right now I’m ready to return this toaster and use candle instead.
Biggest level of yam-headedness I’ve reached. Skipped my direct flight and left a day early from Barcelona, flew to London to catch the Eurostar to Paris with her so she wouldn’t be lonely on the train ride.
Anecdotally, the smartest people I've met have never claimed to know everything, quite the opposite, they're very aware of what they don't know and admit it. On the other hand...🤫
Anecdotally, who know who DOESN'T have this problem?
@StarbucksJAM
. Great customer experience every time. Are you really telling me it's just the people? No, it's the company, the training, and the standards.
Listen...listen. Whoever approved the marketing spend for this campaign, I hope you get your roses. I don't know what the ROI will look like, but this is bold and innovative. I want an expert (marketing or policy person) to chime in.
GM all! An amazing day to be 1% better.
@CafeBlueJA
that goes for you too. Ordered a coffee @ Sovereign branch this morn. 10 minutes later no coffee so I asked about it, order had been forgotten, nbd, but then the barista got visibly upset that I had pointed it out. Poor CX.
When I moved to London 13 years ago I was met with a lot of stereotypes about Jamaica. I'd constantly get asked "So did you grow up on the beach?". It made me furious, 1) because how dare you assume that, and 2) because I did 😭.
I grew up early - high school at 8, university at 12, and looking back I’m so grateful to the few people that had the patience(!), and care to form friendships with an awkward kid. It meant a lot then, and still does now. Pic: 2nd year of uni at a LAN party
A brand that chooses to *pause* advertising with a platform may do so because the marketing value of saying they are pausing advertising is greater than the marketing value from actually advertising. It's a funny world. Be aware of virtue signalling.
If one applied extreme ownership here, the questions would be “why was my interview technique unable to accurately assess skill set” or “what am I not providing in the workplace to unlock potential” etc
Yesterday I made a poor choice, today I'm making a better one. I'll be putting together a series of threads specifically catered at people looking to crack the US/EU tech job market. Honestly the most valuable feedback will be a personal, but there are some general tips that help
Despite my lack of media training, I managed to nail the tricky task of handing over an envelope, crossed over with a handshake, and smiling at the same time. Pictured is Donnell Martin, founder of Yaad Way and 2nd place at the RevUp Caribbean pitch competition.
This has come up a few times privately, worth tweeting about. (Jamaica) National Commercial Bank will always reimburse customers that are victims of internal employee fraud. Your deposits AND investments are 100% protected in the case of internal employee fraud.
@CafeBlueJA
Why does this matter? Well, I didn't like being treated as an inconvenience. I felt a bit ashamed that I I had caused a "hassle". I now associate this negative emotion with the brand and will be more tentative about purchasing and recommending products from there in the future.
Potential landlord wanted X, I offered Y. Pointed out that his property had been posted for 6 months and if it goes another 2 he'd net more in rent over 24 months even with my reduced offer. Maths did make sense, got refused. Remains listed 6 months later.
A small example of why I f**king love
@monzo
, even their interview process is incredible/exceeds. My hiring coordinator arranged a goodie bag after my final stage in 2019, remembered that I was going on holiday right after and even packed some sunscreen. Made with ❤️.
Saw a group of young T&F athletes working out at express fitness, got motivated and jumped in, now ready to support a local physiotherapist with repeat business.
Alright, start of my series on Get Remote Work Ready, also called GRWR (I'm joking
@rtrowe
). First up, getting your CV in order. This is an area that has been WELL covered so there's nothing too substantial for me to add here.
Going to be open here...one of the things I fear moving back to Jamaica is being socially isolated. I developed an *incredible* tribe in London that motivate + hold me accountable to be better. I'm not a natural people person so this was a huge deal. Now I need a new tribe.
A common fallacy is to take advice from highly gifted outliers. They themselves don't really know what made them great. Statistically their advice does not apply to you.
I don’t need to know a companies financials to choose NOT to invest. Sometimes the character of the founder/CEO is enough to decide that for me. Thankful for Twitter every day.
As requested by
@utenjm
, how I landed my first Product Manager role! Caveat: this is a “test” thread that I’ll likely rewrite later to be more useful to any aspiring PM’s. <thread emoji>
Finally, really chuffed to be sharing a bit about my career so far, navigating startups, Fortune 100 companies, tackling problems like financial freedom, credit fairness, online safety, leadership etc in Medellin, Colombia next month. Grateful.
There’s a point at which a finance influencer becomes more influencer than finance person (i.e., they make more money from their audience than their professional work). The moment they cross that threshold, you should probably stop listening to them.
Alright, some professional Twitter stuff now. If you’re a manager, next time you have a 1:1 keep a track of how much time you spend talking vs listening. Ideally you listen 80, talk 20. More a guideline than rule, but you’ll get a lot of milage out of it.
This has gotten way more attention than I thought. I have nothing to promote other than my desire to develop Product Management as a technical competency in the Caribbean. If you currently hire PM’s or are considering hiring, let’s connect.
In my experience, some of the simplest people in the careers that we dont often think about make the most raw cash.
Here’s a list:
-roof man
-plumber
-electrician
-welder
-upholsterer
-tiler
-painter

What I *intend* to write about 1/ how to structure your cv 2/ how to discover roles 3/ how to perform research 4/ what a remote hiring process typically looks like 5/ the importance of a narrative 6/ interview prep and presentation 7/ negotiating an offer.
Also, why aren't more corporates/artistes in Jamaica showing support for the
@JamaicaConstab
and retweeting so the message gets as broad audience as possible?! Unnu don't support it?!
At NCU (I went in 2005-2009) for the first 2 years as a student you had to perform some manual labour every semester (chop grass, paint, etc). I coached tennis. It was a requirement. Did other Jamaican universities like UWI and UTech have that "manual labour" requirement?
CEO's, execs, et al - it's great to consume decks and consolidated research, a lot gets done at HQ, but put some miles on your shoes, hit the streets and go speak to your customers.
In 2021 I took every meeting, call, and “pick your brain” request. I understood the downside, lazy opportunists, but I also made some great connections, landed a new role, and launched a coaching side-gig. 2022 - no handouts. Yesterday’s price is not today’s price.
When fundraising, everything but a wire confirmation is a no. A no is a no, a "sounds really exciting" is a no, "I'll invest is a no", even a signed term sheet can sometimes be a "no". Until the money is in the account, don't count your chickens.
Tough story of banking fraud and theft on the timeline. I feel it for the guy, the emotional turmoil of dealing with fraud is almost as bad as the loss of funds. That being said, it’s sadly not an experience limited to banking in the Caribbean and a very common experience in..
If I ever start my own company, this is roughly what the offices will look like. Any excuse to build my own third space. One of the containers will be outfitted for a coffee shop.
I’ll say it again…if you wish to have a career in tech in Jamaica, UTECH is the place for you. I’m not saying this because I went to UTech. Just take my silly advice as someone who works in tech 😅
Here's what I don't get about startups locally...employees outside of the CEO are RARELY in the cap table, and if they are it's only close to IPO. You should not work for a startup unless you get equity
Caught some of pitchdeckJA last night. Didn't get to stay for the full thing, but it gave me something to think about in terms of format, timing, types of questions asked by the judges, but also how the founders responded. Pitch I caught was the Estate Planning startup. 1/n
The more I coach Senior/Head of/Director of Product candidates, the more I see trends on what they find valuable in my feedback. Need to start documenting this for future twitter threads, potentially turn it into a video series.
Product idea: MyLink
Digital Marketplace to sell your "links". Imagine you login, see a top rated seller with a Tax Office "link", you purchase the link, the seller then puts you in touch with his "link" that fast tracks your drivers license application.
I don't deal well with temptation. I have a VERY simple rule, if I don't want to eat cookies, I do not go down the cookie aisle. So please explain to me WHY someone has just brought a full tray of bread pudding into my house?
I'm no city planner, but walking through Medellin I was struck by the amount of greenery and I loved it. Trees everywhere blocked sun glare, provided shade, aesthetically pleasing, and felt more true to the region than just steel, glass, and concrete.
Getting this news and feedback will never not be a great feeling. Coaching yet another PM to landing a job at Meta/Facebook. I used to hate developing others, felt like a waste of time, now it’s something that brings joy.
I generally don’t find it helpful to focus on what the other party could do to change the situation, you have very little influence on other people, you can always change yourself
@mannishwaata
I mean…it was designed to be provocative, so it provoked. One of the downsides of social media, platforms reward engagement over all else. The more divisive the message, the higher engagement, and better business for those who want to raise their profile.
Met enough ridiculously wealthy people to know that intelligence and hard work nuh have much to do with it, so don't put them on a pedestal. So much of your success in life will, like it or not, come down to luck.
