I haven’t been on dating apps in years but I always thought a common mistake people made was trying to cast a wide net instead of catering their profile to exactly the type of person that’s right for them and accepting that 99% of people are not that person
@opinonhaver
I’ve seen people insist with absolute certainty that he’s a white/euro-supremacist crypto-fash account, but never provide any hard evidence beyond “come on…”
@ArmandDoma
Like 3 minutes ago I came across a similarly wild reply from the very same person. Entirely different post, entirely different subject. Really impressive range.
@BadVaccineTakes
@alixabeth
It’s amazing to see the overlap between “PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY” and “nothing bad that happens to me could ever possibly be my fault”
@ZaidJilani
This is shallow analysis. He doesn’t imply that every issue is black and white, because he doesn’t talk about every issue (or even every aspect of the issues he highlights). He selects topics *because* he feels that they involve clear hypocrisy/wrongdoing/etc. (cont’d)
@ycsm1n
@birdbrainmd3
I’d imagine it’s something like “they sensationalize/overreport crime and otherwise allow themselves to be used as mouthpieces by political operatives to influence public opinion,” which AFAICT is no more true of local journalists than national ones.

Man sometimes I’m having a beer and just want to know how buzzed it’s gonna get me, and even that (legally required) info can be hard to find.

She then went on to use the interview didactically to make a point, calling it a “perfect example.”
So platforming bad people can be useful… but only when she does it.

Directly? Nothing, I guess (although you’d be hard pressed to find someone who believes in the Big Bang but not atoms). My point is that serious Christian theologians have no problem reconciling established scientific facts with their religious beliefs.
@ZaidJilani
and are ripe for the format of his show. Obviously you can disagree with his choices and opinions on those topics, but nothing about it implies that he believes nothing is nuanced. It’s just that “nuanced, complicated topics” aren’t what the show, is (mostly) about.
@solarsystern
It’s funny how men used to characterize women as basically flat – no internal monologue, no great moral struggles, no complexity – and now a lot of women do basically the same thing to men.

I’m not necessarily universally anti-gun, but there’s absolutely a contingent of gun owners that dream of one day having a good excuse to use theirs on another human

The actual etymology of “should’ve” isn’t obscure or archaic. It’s very obvious why “should have” is correct to anyone with a basic comprehension of English, and even as a common mistake, “should of” is not more common than the correct expression.
@bluedgal
@benwikler
And thanks to takes like this, Trump is succeeding in turning *both* sides of the political spectrum against journalists that are trying really fucking hard. They literally cannot win. There are no right moves, ever. I’m so glad they exist, and so glad I’m not one of them rn.
@bilbosfootcomb
The worst part about this IMO is the twitter-standard absolute refusal to introspect/rethink/apologize in any way in the face of tons of ppl saying this is a bad look and needlessly mean to a harmless person. Just dig in the heels bc I couldn’t possibly have made a mistake 🤷🏻♂️

The press is not complicit. For the most part, they’re trying desperately to hold to age-old standards of journalistic integrity, and Trump is pushing those standards to their limits. They’re trying to be actual journalists and not activists, and it’s hard af.

The stance of the church is that many parts of the Old Testament are not meant to be taken literally. The whole “God created the heavens and the earth in 6 days” thing is a good example of that – it’s a metaphor, essentially.
There are 15 members of Allegheny County Council and Colin has never tweeted a single thing about 14 of them. He’s obsessed with
@bethanyhallam
bc, in his words, she spends too much time on the incarcerated and not enough on people like him. (1/)
And that’s the entire point.
Ms. Hallam spends a disproportionate amount of time and effort on the very small percentage of the population in this county who are incarcerated and the much larger law-abiding population feel as if she doesn’t at all care about them.

In addition to the lack of any context, as others have noted, he’s intentionally highlighting a number that he knows will sound especially outrageous to the majority of his followers, who don’t frequently order room service from luxe NYC hotels.

I’m not gonna give a fuck about people who are legitimately struggling to get by doing it because they need to, but the discourse that unequivocally celebrates it just encourages shitty/antisocial behavior from white kids whose parents pay their rent

In the show he’s featured on late-night TV, is hired to write jokes for The Tonys, and is given his own sitcom by NBC specifically because of how successful he is as a standup comic. It’s a cute theory but it doesn’t mesh with major plot points.

But there are actual musicians in this thread defending it. I realize that doesn’t invalidate what you said, but it does kind of diminish the significance of it IMO

I think a big part of his problem is/was that he’s just pretty unlikeable. His public persona has always come off as smug and pretentious, with a strong inclination toward strutting when he’s right and doubling down/refusing accountability when he’s wrong.

Not an expert, but my understanding is that the use of passive voice is meant to convey that suicide is not a personal failing, but the result of illness or trauma inflicted upon someone. Thus the typical phrasing “committed suicide,” akin to “committed murder,” should be avoided

What is the definition of “trapping” here? Because unless you’re either falsely imprisoning them or doing something that would be reasonably expected to cause bodily harm (neither applies here), it sure doesn’t seem like you’re doing anything criminal by *possessing a beverage.*
@danlehnermusic
Wow, never would’ve guessed. That idea of “feeling at home” is an interesting one – seems very specific to the creators’ intentions whether that’s a good or a bad thing, from work to work and even situation to situation within a given work.

I think he’s just constitutionally incapable of ignoring people who attack him, which created a long-running vicious cycle between him and twitter leftists. That’s been replaced, for now, by fighting with racists. Impossible to say what the next thing will be.
@brokeassley
@IHateNYT
I think it’s tricky! Obviously you have to strike a balance, and you’ll risk missing someone you might’ve hit it off with. But this was basically my strategy, and I had more success than a lot of my friends at meeting cool people that I meshed well with.

Yes, the premise of the show is basically adults remembering how awful (and hilarious) puberty was, while also modeling ways that we can make it a little less shitty for kids going through it today.

I don’t know who he is/don’t really care but I absolutely believe “having abhorrent beliefs at the societal level while being kind/compassionate/likable at the interpersonal level” is a thing that happens not-infrequently

Wait, seriously? Do you really think “lefty twitter dunks” have changed literally anyone’s mind ever? Genuine (not irony-soaked) long-form persuasive writing, even if it’s kinda bad, will almost definitely have more impact than snarky quips on twitter.
