@thatdalglishguy
Even Chaucer used singular they, where are these teachers getting their sources 🙄
Anyway excellent for both y’all, respect to your kiddo, I hope the teacher isn’t a butt about it!
@blobbynfriends
@AddyBrossWrites
I had one hair stylist pause when I wanted to chop off all my hair and said “but you’ll look like a boy” and I was like “yeah that’s the point”
Luckily once I started to going to the (admittedly more expensive) alt hair salons they were more in tune with enby hair requests
@elisabethrolstn
In the States most folks can take more than 7 years for a PhD to be completed so I’m very baffled by people who think four years is “too long”
I’m sorry someone said this to you; extremely uncalled for
We can all use a good miniature bear right now!
This exceptional figurine was discovered in a peat bog near Słupsk in Poland. It was carved from amber during the Mesolithic- Neolithic, ca. 5000- 2000 BC
@oldenoughtosay
This is like the opposite of what happened to one of my family members who had to bring in his birth certificate to show the nuns at his school that his given name was Frank so they’d stop calling him Francis
Also I want all the teens to go ridic on their nicknames too 💯
@LizWFab
Clothes are gender neutral when someone wearing them says they are??? Yeah I wear dresses but they're MY dresses and therefore they are gender neutral. These things are so frustrating, when will they learn? (I know the answer)
"Full funding" for grad school should include secure housing for the entirety of that students' time at the school. Either housing provided by the uni or enough $ to pay for a 1 br within walking distance. *All* of these living spaces should also be pet/family friendly, too.
@rorschachisgay
Gotta pay for enough masks that you have one for wash day
Also cloaks are rather expensive
All the candles, too
He also has that boat in the sewer, had to buy it or have someone come down and build it on site
Imagine what his shopping list looks like
How does he get groceries
@vintagehistoria
Ugh I can imagine
I was called racist for studying Ancient Greece and I have never been more perplexed by a reaction to explaining my research
Grad app costs from unis I'm considering:
Brown $75, Columbia $85, Cornell $105, NYU $110, Princeton $90, UNC-CH $95, UChicago $90, UMich $75, UPenn $90, and Yale $105.
$920 total.
How do people afford to apply to several schools ;^;
(Gonna try for fee waivers obvs, but oof...)

This is precisely why I'm so open my DID, especially as an academic on here, as academia is one of the worst places about mental health issues
Most intense arguments my system has is begging me to eat something other than chicken strips for dinner
@thatdalglishguy
Absolutely. Also, the “he or she” is just clunky (personally I also think “s/he” is not only clunky but worse). “They” always flows so much better! So baffling when people can use singular “they” because it’s already in English, until you ask them to do it.
@Lollardfish
As an undergrad I lived permanently in the dorms for almost 2 years because I was homeless. If something happened like this happened back then, I would have had to find someone willing to take me in for x amount of time.
Got a part time library position offer today 💖
I'll be teaching in the morn/library in the afternoon/early evening.
Let's hope the good news keeps rolling in :3
Y'all, my boss has teal hair, tattoos, and a septum piercing, one of my co-workers is also non binary, and I was not misgendered ONCE today I am so stoked about working there
@mrlibrarydude
Students should be able to fall asleep in the library. If they're closing, I get waking them up. But if the students are paying out the wazoo to attend uni, then let them use the library, even if it's to sleep. If they're not disturbing anyone, I don't see the problem.
I GOT AN A IN MY REPUBLIC TO PRINCIPATE COURSE
I'M GRADUATING WITH A 3.9 OMG
and my undergrad ancient history professor said I'd never make it to grad school HA
Had to block another historian for telling someone their support of trans Classicists was "politics" & to resign from the position bc of the support 🙄
So exhausting for my existence to be claimed as "political" when I just want to exist without feeling endangered all the time 😪
@caromholland
I had a professor laugh in my face and tell me I would never get into graduate school and I've gotten in, twice (both MA programs), and I am going to do it again and get that PhD
Spite and revenge are great motivators
Guys help
Just had someone call the museum & ask if we had anything in the collection that Midas touched & it turned to gold
with absolute sincerity
I had to say, um, he’s a mythological figure, so we wouldn’t have anything like that. Is there anything else I can help you with?
So, it's official now: rejections from every place I applied for PhD programs.
I'm really glad I went to Classics Social Hour tonight because I'm not sure if I could have mentally handled the news without having had such good company before I saw that email 💖
Some academics just need to retire, academia has moved past the need for these certain academics
And if you think this is about you, please take a moment to consider why you would think that
@ZJAyres
@BBCNews
Also my ADHD assessment was incredibly distressing and actively triggered me over multiple hours and I only did it to get paperwork for uni in order to get accommodations or I’d have never sought an official DX bc of *how distressing* the assessment is. Wtf.
Finally messaged potential supervisors at Cambridge, St Andrews, and Edinburgh, AND I got a job interview at a museum I REALLY, REALLY want to work at in the immediate future >.>

@BendyScientist
Diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, had a prof tell me to drop out until I was "better" when I told her if I had a dissociative episode I might mix days up and miss class sometimes.
Retook the class with someone else who would accommodate me & got an A.

Yep I live in Scotland now for a PhD and my family is in America like?? I’d rather just cancel than putting up with such nonsense.
Found a rather well-paying (read:living wage!) museum job in Maryland not terribly far from where we're moving. Just applied. Cross your fingers for me!
@HelanaDarwin
I literally quit a library job recently bc I wasn't given too many hours anyway, I was burnt out, they were lax on masking rules which made me anxious, & the way they treated me was bad for my mental health. You are infinitely more important than that job & you deserve better.
PhD programs that would otherwise admit students but cut them off for lack of experience in languages should include funding/support for that incoming student to attend a summer language institute or intensive
If that's the only problem that should be part of the funding imo
So anyone in Scotland want an American roommate? I come with a cat who is obsessed with trying to open pantry doors and eating at the table like a people.
Casual reminder that 1. I’m not a woman and 2. I’d like to never be included in lists mentioning women even in a celebratory manner and 3. I love women and celebrating them, but I’m not part of that category! Please stop including me in those lists or tweets. Thanks you.
Hey just wanted to remind everyone (prolly no one who can see this bc my account is locked) that my existence isn't a fucking debate
I exist and I'm non-binary and I'm the only one who can say otherwise, not anyone else ✌
@oldenoughtosay
Not a woman, but I always said I'd change mine if they had a cooler last name than me
But my last name is Pendragon, so good luck future potential spouse.
Hey, if someone is super stoked about getting into a grad program, especially because we know how much time/energy/effort just *applying* takes, don't come into their responses with condolences. That's horrendously rude & uncalled for. Let's put more positivity out there, c'mon.
Who wants to buy a Victorian house with me and essentially make the entire thing a library where every nook and cranny is filled with books from all over the world and we sit in the window and read while it rains and the cats nap next to us
@McMisoprostol
The person went private and changed her handle but I found her and reported the account, too. Absolutely awful, I'm sorry you had to deal with such an atrocious person.
@GeneralRhivous
When they put in the subway in Bulgaria, they found parts of a Roman town iirc, but they built around it so now as you're walking to the station in Sofia, sometimes there will be buildings outside & archaeology under glass inside next to the rail. It's amazing!

Someone pointed out that it’s only said by someone who’s never matured past the playground bully he was as a kid and shows that he can’t think of anything but childish insults to hurl at another adult who is baffled by his insistence on using that insult

Morning Teacher Meeting: "We have a trans student-"
Me: *bashes through the closet doors* hi I'm non-binary & usually use they/them, if he needs support or anyone to talk to, as an official Trans Elder TM I'm happy to do it
One of the sentences in this book I'm reading says, "Cicero's silence here is remarkable."
And my immediate thought was Cicero ever being quiet at all was probably remarkable.
deleting my dating apps because I want to meet someone the old fashioned way (whoever can string this bow and fire an arrow through twelve axe handles will be able to marry me)
@ellle_em
I had the opportunity to study abroad in Japan for my senior year, and the difference of how safe I felt at school was astonishing. We had class, school festivals, and did class chores, not one time I ever felt unsafe. No drills, no lockdown because of bomb threats, etc.
@nadhirawho
All I see here is "I'm bad at my job." I had a professor like this and I had to have a psych withdrawal from his classes. Twice. This isn't just bad teaching, but will definitely negatively affect the mental health of those students. If that's what they write, what do they say?
I'm officially going to be at my current school I'm teaching at until the end of the year! I'll be floating for one month before hopping into 7th grade ELA. I'm excited!
