Every classroom needs desks in rows. The kids are happier and learning more. There is no social-emotional benefit to seating kids in groups facing each other, most without line of sight to the content and teacher. Quite the opposite.

Yesterday a local “parenting expert and coach” called me “ableist” for saying parents should teach their kids to say please and thank you and take turns. The kids might have anxiety or ADHD and doing this would ruin their Halloween fun. People pay her for this advice.

Male elementary teachers are a riot. They totally dispense with all the extra stuff and decor and just cut to the chase. Read this. No tech. Handwrite more. Hardly anything on the walls. It probably really helps preserve their sanity too.

Things that will close the achievement gap: 1. Literacy first every instructional minute 2. Desks in rows facing the front where the teacher is 3. Baseline is quiet and calm classrooms for reading and thinking and handwriting/drawing 4. No phones 📵 bell to bell 5.

Elementary math teachers don't have to be "great at math" to teach it really well. Probably a big part of the problem is so many people deep into math messed up solid, simple, clear, concise, effective math teaching and curriculum that any teacher can do.

Might not ever forgive the demonization of “boring worksheets” for math facts and times tables. You can stand on your head and spit wooden nickels and spend $4000 per kid on manipulatives and EdTech but you won’t do better than writing them out and saying them like it’s 1822.

I cannot emphasize enough how much kids in “high flying” districts are missing with balanced literacy — “Guided Reading” “Fountas & Pinnell” the “Daily Five” hearing “spelling doesn’t matter” shallow “fantasy” books, graphic novels about pop culture and sports. It’s bad.

Someone in Math Education needs to put out a clear, concise, PLAIN ENGLISH essay on Math that lets people know that having kids work with numbers/symbols on paper with pencil is as good as it gets. Like. 1000 words. Max. This whole field seems massively confused and misled.

We are making (have been making for many years) a big mistake telling kids that calculus in HS is non negotiable. Doctors and engineers can take Calc as college freshmen. There are millions of great middle class jobs in Accounting that don’t need Calc. It’s gatekeeping. Any kid
