on the first day of classes, mizzou had:
- a professor fired for racially insensitive comments
- 159 cases already on campus
- the todd apartments evacuated because of a (supposed) fire
- a bat in the missourian newsroom
day two, let’s get this bread
my job as a reporter is to hold the powerful accountable and be a watchdog. when the chancellor/president of the university decides to block me on here, and yet also brag about how great our j school is, that’s a huge problem.
photojournalism is an extremely vital and important part of storytelling. It’s not an easy job, and a lot goes into it.
Very tired of journalists assuming that what photojournalists do is so simple and small compared to their work.
we work so damn hard.
Here’s something that might warm some Mizzou fans’ hearts: after the women lost to Drake tonight, Kaleb Brown, DaJuan Gordon, and Trevon Brazile all came to Mizzou Arena to play basketball together.
if you’re a journalist who posts photos that were taken by photojournalists when you’re reporting on here and you do not credit them for their work, i hope you know how unbelievably disrespectful are you are
Layoffs start today in Gannett. If you want to stand in solidarity with the journalists and newsrooms who are working through them and suffering from them, please subscribe to your local newspaper and support local news.
Since there’s a lot of talk about this today, I just wanted to say: if you’re a student who struggles financially or are financially independent and cannot afford to take unpaid internships, it doesn’t make you any less devoted or deserving. You deserve a spot at the table.
ICYMI: MUPD were called to a dorm yesterday for a welfare check by a mom who hadn’t heard from her son, a University of Missouri student, since Monday. MUPD couldn’t find him in his room but they did find that he ubered to a house in the suburbs late that night. 🧵
Last night, around 300 students gathered outside of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) on the MU campus after a freshman was hospitalized at a fraternity event for alcohol poisoning. Protesters highlighted concerns with the university’s recent issues of sexual assault and hazing.
Re: mizzou deciding against the mask mandate
I’m 21, but I have long COVID. I’ve been bedridden and have chest pain, etc. since December. The virus doesn’t care if you’re young. It’s scary to think that many students will end up in the same position because of a lack of urgency.
📣 ICYMI: After a 4 year hiatus, Yik Yak is available in the App Store again!

a lot of you are talking about the interview where mun choi talks about how he’s patrolling the mizzou campus on a moped to make sure that people are social distancing, and yet none of you are talking about how the license plate on his moped literally says “munspeed”
feels a little discouraging that when you’re a woman in photojournalism, you learn how to deal with sexual harassment from sources and fellow professionals in the industry before you even fully learn how to use photo mechanic.
all of this is wild but i am hopeful that this serves as a good reminder to the public about how serious journalism ethics are. the next time you think a photo from somewhere like the AP or even your local newspaper is fake or photoshopped, remember this!
Multiple photo agencies such as AP and Reuters have pulled the new photo of Kate Middleton shared by Kensington Palace from circulation amid concerns that it was ‘manipulated.’
Associated Press said the photo was being ‘killed’: “At closer inspection, it appears that the source
I’m certain that if it weren’t for the generous lawyer who stepped in to represent both me and my peers, I would still be blocked. This isn’t something that I take lightly. We need to hold those in powerful positions accountable for their actions.
Last night, around 50 students gathered at Speakers Circle to honor the victims of the Atlanta shooting. The group started with eight minutes of silence, and followed with speeches from students about their experiences as part of the AAPI community.
cw: suicide
Feels surreal to say but one year ago today, I was in the emergency room after a failed suicide attempt. I was so low and in so much pain. I was so angry that I had to be here.
But..
Today, I’m happy! I’m healthy. I’m alive. And I’m so very grateful for that.
Christie Smythe helped break the story of Martin Shkreli’s arrest in 2015. Then she "started to fall for him," she said. “In journalism school, they don’t really tell you what to do when this comes up,” she told
@katie_robertson
in an interview.
i am once again thinking about the time that a male photographer who takes photos of pretty girls holding smoke bombs once told me that i was less of a photographer than him because i use autofocus when i photograph ...
...wait for it....
sports
I want to clarify that I have never tweeted anything directly at Mun Choi, nor have I ever said anything directly negative about him on my twitter. Even then, for a university official at that grown age to block a reporter (or anyone) for that matter is wrong.
rather than saying “there’s no iconic photographs from this pandemic” you could just say “i don’t actually pay attention to any photojournalists’ work” but ok
Before I left, I made a portrait of Kobe Brown in the locker room after the loss to Princeton in March Madness, & got the idea that it would go well with a letter to Mizzou fans if it ended up being his last game as a tiger.
Today, that letter published:
Some professional news: I’m excited to share that I will be heading to
@CSTribune
as a photo intern this summer. My love of photography began in Wyoming when I was eight years old, so it’s so surreal to come back to a place that means a great deal to me for such an amazing paper.
Happening now: students are gathering at speakers circle for a vigil in honor of the 8 lives that were lost to mass shooting in Atlanta on March 16.
@columbiatribune
...a professor emailed her class letting them know that her title is Dr. and not Mrs, and fullsendmizzou posted it, thinking that it’s funny, and now there’s men in the comments trying to find her email to harass her...unbelievably vile
If you think that giving photojournalists credit for their work when you repost/share it here on twitter involves too much time & effort on your end (it doesn’t), imagine how much time & effort that it takes to *actually* make the photos that you’re sharing
As storm clouds begin to hover over Columbia, members of Phi Gamma Delta tear down a banner at the front of their house & continue their move-out process on Sunday afternoon. On Friday, the University of Missouri moved to withdraw FIJI as a recognized school organization.
A reporter at the Cody Enterprise in Cody, Wyoming has resigned after being confronted over fabricating quotes, likely through an AI program that he was using to write his articles: .
my internship ended today. i love wyoming beyond words and have learned so much. i’ll still be here next week to help out with election coverage, but then i’m headed back to missouri. thank you for letting me help tell some of your many stories, wyoming. 💖
I find it interesting that, whenever I pointed my camera even close to the direction of crowded Brookside balconies tonight, I was met with angry screams saying not to photograph them.
It’s almost as if people know that they shouldn’t be partying during a pandemic, huh?
tonight I lost my best friend in the entire world, who not only saved my life, but put all of the color that there is into it. She is and always will be my hero, my best friend, and what I’m most proudest of in life.
Kiwi forever. I love you always.
watching professors in the j school respond to christie smythe saying she never learned journalism ethics at mizzou is so funny i think i will give them all five stars on ratemyprofessor as a treat
a good reminder: this isn’t just a rule at march madness. this is a rule EVERYWHERE. a game in the ncaa, a politician speaking at an event, etc.
it’s become more and more common to see people replicate these and use them just because they see people posting them.
The Columbia Tribune was once a legendary photojournalism paper, and that legacy finally ends today. A lot of amazing photojournalists have come out of there. This is heartbreaking to see.
1/x Just learned today Don Shrubshell, the only staff photog left at
@columbiatribune
, has been laid off by
@GateHouse_Media
. The word comes a day after
@MissouriPress
announced Shrubby will be inducted this fall into the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame.
I hate journalists complaining about there being too much news, or breaking news keeping them awake. You have a ringside seat to history as it unfolds and an inflated sense of self as a result. Save your complaints for your group texts, if you have enough friends for one. Thanks!
Since this goes along with a theme of things today, I just wanted to say that it absolutely breaks my heart when people are mean and catty to each other in journalism school and then try to pass off bullying as just being “competitive”. It’s a huge issue and it needs to stop
After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.
just got trash talked by a high schooler for being on the “wrong side” of the football field since she thought I was a student at the other school that hers is playing
ma’am i have a giant camera with me and a press badge on
I lost my Grandpa to COVID yesterday. He was vaccinated. I couldn’t be there to say goodbye and I was in a different state than my family. It felt way too cruel and heartbreaking.
Please get vaccinated. Wear a mask. This isn’t over. We’re still losing people who should be here.
lady in the starbucks drive thru window said i had a cute baby in my backseat and considering the fact that i do not have a baby i am too scared to turn around now
Sights from the line to get into Yellowstone this morning, which finally opened back up to the public after being closed for a week and a half due to flooding
After being struck by lightning on the morning of October 23, Columbia’s precious bur oak tree was gifted with some well wishes recently. A copy of Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, a bouquet of flowers, and a sign reading “get well soon” were all left for the tree.
Only sharing this because 1. this is insane but 2. this and a billion more reasons are why AI and journalism — especially the rigorous ethics involved with it — should never be used together.
Sammy Clemons collected hundreds of comics, volunteered with animals and helped train coworkers at Sonic who also had disabilities.
Rather than focusing on the way he died, here’s how the 21-year-old college student lived, according to friends and family:
Just a little shoutout to this badass mom and lady photojournalist. This was a particularly difficult day for
@alicia_c_devine
and she still did the job *and* came back with story tips.

Christie Smythe covered white-collar crime for Bloomberg News and lived "the perfect little Brooklyn life" with her husband. Then she threw it all away for one of her sources: infamous pharma bro Martin Shkreli.
getting to know people and hearing their stories makes my heart feel so full and happy and i feel like every story that i’ve covered has taught me so much about kindness and empathy and being a better person
was trying to put a memory card in my camera and i was very confused as to why it wasn’t fitting right and then i realized i was shoving my super smash bros game from my nintendo switch into my camera :))
fyi if you think that you’re now entitled to make super condescending and offensive jokes about how female journalists flirt/sleep with sources, please stop before you start 🤗 it’s harmful, extremely untrue, and a sexist idea
