some notes with this milestone:
last year at this time, i was battling imposter syndrome and considering quitting PhD: i thought it’s a FAULT to go to a phd straight from undergrad without doing any postbacc RA or work experiences. i felt like i was nothing but my degrees… (1/n)

See our

After years of building writing support tools, I've always wondered why some people loved them (even when they're bad!) & others disliked them no matter what.
That's why I ran this study which is out with

One thing I found useful is to spend 15 minutes every day writing diaries. I usually write what my day is like and what thoughts I have that day. it allows for REFLECTION: focusing on myself, confronting my emotions & breakdowns, and documenting happiness & accomplishments :)🌷🌷

PhD is not a competition over numbers. I now really agree with this: “The biggest things you can learn from a PhD is not something u can write down on your CV” Even tho I have many troubles right now (visas, paper rejections, procrastination...) but I now enjoy this process (9/n)

Then, I realized, is feeling confused a good sign? It means that you are exploring and learning stuff. you arent set on anything but giving everything a critical thought? And later on, I learned more about my strengths: I am good at doing user studies, and I love doing them (7/n)
They all tried to understand my tiny bit of worry from their own experiences and then used their examples to tell me: "YOU ARE DOING WELL ALREADY." this line seems cliche, but it really helps. People say “it’s totally fine for u to feel confused” since everyone else does (5/n)
It just felt like a massive leap and an “unwise” choice. I have no solid publication record compared to ppl with masters and crazily publishing undergrads & pre-docs. also, I need to take many technical CS classes as someone from an InfoSci background. I felt so left behind (2/n)
plus, I'm unsure how I and my research can possibly fit within the broader context of the industry. Thus, I almost taking the week off due to such feelings. After that, I tried to reach out for help. I talked to my advisor about this - who is really supportive and amazing (3/n)
@katyilonka
From this, we see LLMs can help transform technical info into a relatable & engaging medium.
But at the same time, LLMs are far from perfect… we need user interaction to produce successful hooks… so a HUMAN-AI WORKFLOW
again, details here :)
(12/n)
@Kim_Munyeong
1/ put Education right after the Research Interest section. 2/ rewrite the Club Experience section into something more “project/technical experience” 3/ Research: bring more keywords like how you explored/analyzed (what tools & technology) 4/ use a CV template that’s more clear
i also met with my labmates & friends. I talk to them not only about such syndrome but also to distract myself and seek social stimuli. During these conversations, I was firstly feeling awkward and weird, but it turned out everyone was so supportive, like therapy sessions (4/n)
Once, during a CRA-IDEALS panel, one host asked whoever in this room had felt imposter syndrome in the past week or something. Almost everyone raised their hands. including all the panelists - department chairs, NSF funding heads, senior professors on the stage. SHOCKED (6/n)
If AI ethicists need a doctorate in CS to be qualified to critique AI, then AI researchers need to have a doctorate in ethics/humanities/philosophy/HCI/etc. to be qualified to build AI.
context: Many researchers now explain their work on Twitter threads, Tweetorials – what you're reading rn. Tweetorials make science accessible to a broader audience.
The key of a Tweetorial is its “HOOK”, the first tweet. because it motivates people to keep reading… (2/n)
When 1st-year PhD student Tao Long (
@taolongg
) was applying to our program, he signed up for the Pre-Submission Application Review program. He got helpful feedback that helped him tailor his application to Columbia. Find out about his experience -
And I found out -- I know something that other people don’t know, and I am good at something that other people are not (thanks to my labmates and my advisor, they did a great job of telling me about this — validation matters) i now understand why PhD is called a process (8/n)
*randomly showing off my TA offers*
I really ENJOY my teaching (more like co-learning) experiences with my peer students. As I articulated in my PhD applications, this passion for teaching strongly contributes to my decision to pursue a graduate degree and academic career. (1/2)
@katyilonka
Step 1# Generate everyday examples.
users input their topic, and the system generates 5 concrete everyday examples of that topic. like here are examples of “AJAX” from web programming, and the user can pick one that is factually correct and relatable to move forward. (6/n)
@katyilonka
Similarly, Steps 3# 4# and 5# focus on turning such concrete, everyday examples and experiences into ANECDOTES – so we can make them more personal, detailed, narrative-driven, and interesting:
“Yesterday, I was up until 3 am scrolling Facebook. How did I not notice… ” (8/n)
@katyilonka
Interestingly, users also made a lot of edits throughout the process, for 2 major reasons:
1. for the tweetorial requirements
(jargon-free, more relatable, more concrete, more narrative-driven, more curiosity sparkling)
2. for personal style
(personal writing style and
@katyilonka
ofc, during the process, users can always regenerate, make edits, or use their own examples…
Step 2# Generate common experiences about the selected everyday example.
here, for the example of “loading new posts… without refreshing”, readers may have shared experiences: (7/n)
@katyilonka
a lot of challenges we see… can be addressed by a brainstorming and writing support tool.
LLMs can help overcome fixation, and users can collaborate with the AI and easily write high-quality social media posts about their technical topics. However, we found… (4/n)
@katyilonka
Finally, integrating all the previous anecdotes, examples, and experiences, we have the final Step
#6
Generate a Sample Hook &
#7
Final Hook writing, where the user co-create a complete and engaging hook.
More details can be found in the paper: (9/n)
@katyilonka
We also ran a user study (n=10) to see if the workflow helps. All users were asked to write 6 hooks, 3 with the system and 3 without. And, we found that our workflow
significantly lowers
** mental demand
** effort
* frustration
while significantly improves
** perfomence
(10/n)
however, prev studies by
@katyilonka
found hook writing is a challenge for STEM experts. We are trained to write long-a** papers for other experts, not these informal, short social media posts. also, brainstorming layman’s terms sometimes take forever, and all brain cells! (3/n)
@katyilonka
LLMs can't automate the hook writing task well — their responses contain errors. or they give examples that a non-technical audience would not relate to.
so WE NEED A HUMAN-LLM WORKFLOW: scaffold the process into multi steps, and users interact with the system to co-create (5/n)
@NishatLea
same here! i want to use my example to tell those ppl who didnt publish any papers before grad school - you can do well!!!! i'm sure you can do well. trust me, trust the process, trust the people, and trust yourself!!!
