That makes the birds do stuff that helps the most bird-like flowers have more offspring. The plants blindly follow the blueprints of their DNA.

@juliebeth @WryCritic @mummer_s We split off about the time these were developing wings, I believe! Maybe a mistake. And of course this is how bats started, presumably at about the same time. Pterosaurs were dead... but so were small insectivorous tree-living birds. Before new ones evolved, bats struck.

It's very long for reaching down crannies to get grubs. I've never heard of an explanation of a mechanism by which it might be protecting the brain, and can't imagine one.

@Mistyswoman Great news! For me, my fire detector started peeping. Despite advice & YouTube videos, couldn't take top off to replace battery😡. Successfully muffled it overnight with pillows on a stack: Thank god, electrician found problem! ANOTHER detector was wrongly wired!! Not my fault!

My family drove to Bulgaria summer 1967. At every stop a thick layer of insects had to be scraped and detergented off. Most good petrol stations automatically sent a lad out to do it immediately you arrived. I haven't had a single squashed insect on my windscreen for years.

I remember driving from Sunnyvale, to the Grand Canyon, in the 80s, and having a thick paste of bugs on the front of the VW camper. I made a similar drive in 2019, and barely had to clean the windshield, round trip. The biodiversity loss is staggering.

@larryfroot @ZiziFothSi Platypus is it's own genus, but it & the 6 echidnas, which seems to have evolved from it post-dinosaurs, are their own taxon which is a helluva lot deeper than a genus :-) Platypus (flat foot), its 1st genus name, later changed to Ornithorhynchus (bird beak); an insect had it.
