I NEVER took a math class before starting the PhD. I barely knew what a vector or a derivative were at the moment of application. I studied by myself during the summer before starting and then find some very kind and helpful classmates. Made it above median in 1st phd math exam
I am hesitant to post this information, because I don't want any trolls to come for me, but the highest math class I took before my PhD in Econ was Calc II. I wish I had taken more math, but I wasn't interested in it at the start of college. By the time I considered...

Covid has many drawbacks, but.. instead of being freaking out in a hotel room in rainy Nottingham the day before starting the European Job Market, well.. I am here, in a spectacular, warm and shiny Rome :)
Just received my first actual call to schedule a JM interview, I don’t know how much of this is due to Covid-life but..wow, it felt so good to have a “human” interaction rather than an email exchange!!
Today: did 2 mock interviews, attended 1 mock job talk and 1 student seminar, read 7 JMpackets, sent rec letters for 8 PhD apps..I'm sure it could be way worse, but now I understand when they told me "you'll never gonna have time for your research as you do in grad school"

My dept told me 70% of academic jobs probably won’t be there. This was supposed to give me incentives to search more and more broadly, yet now I feel discouraged, thinking whether is worth to search at all.
As some of you know, I am obsessed about Italian politics, and sometimes even cry for it. Sadly, in the last years, I frequently cried tears of sadness, but today I cried tears of hope. The arrival of
