They're cooling the oil rig down, and would have attended in event of a fire anyway. Thing could have been a lot worse. It was a gas fire, but water vapour still reduces the overall oxygen content. The fire was put out properly when engineers sent nitrogen down the pipe.

It's cooling the air down and the water mist does help bring down the overall oxygen content (gas fire). It will have helped cool the oil rig. They'd have been dispatched anyway in the case of a fire.
