Graduate school did not prepare me for what to do when you’re teaching a small evening seminar that’s scheduled for 3 hrs and only one student shows up.
Received a “Save the Date” for a friend’s wedding in Chicago, followed (about 2 wks later) by an “Un-save the Date” explaining that they had decided to have a smaller ceremony with only family & close friends and I am no longer invited.
Ope! The ‘Splainers have arrived, time to mute the thread, folks.
(It was fine; another student showed up 30 mins in; we made it all kinda sort work; chill yourselves.)
I was complaining about paying my own way w/ academic conferences, & a friend told me to write them off on my taxes, explaining “So if you make $80K / yr ...”
I interrupted him to say that I make $20K+ less than that, and he was shocked.
The kicker: he’s my associate dean.
Academics:
Has any non-academic ever grossly OVERESTIMATED what your salary?
Someone thinks I'm "making bank" because I teach at a big university...I'm a grad student TA....ha
I'm interested in why people think academics are rolling in cash. Academic poverty is very real.
Tonight a woman in her 80s pulled me aside to ask me about my lipstick.
She said, “It’s gorgeous. And I’ve been watching you all night — it hasn’t come off on your wine glass. Has lipstick changed?!?!”
A student I have never met emailed me today, “Hey, Sheila! Professor [Insert Male Name] told me to contact you about ...”
Male colleagues! This is on you! You can model collegiality & professionalism by using your peers’ titles, and training your students to do the same! 💫
Gave students some in-class writing time to work on drafts yesterday, told them to come prepared.
One student pulls out a TYPEWRITER — cherry red, vintage, portable.
I was asked to review a book.
The press sent me the book.
I read the book, it was a very good book.
I wrote my review of the book, praising its merits as a book.
Reader, it was the WRONG BOOK.
I’m not crying, you’re crying: COME, let us cry about how this (from Octavia Butler) was the writing advice we all needed once and honestly probably still do need, right now, today.
My college announced that faculty won’t receive raises this year due to “extraordinary financial circumstances.”
I’ve been a professor for 10 years now and only received pay raises for 2 / 10 yrs.
“Extraordinary” my foot, my whole career has taken place under austerity
I actually cite
@DKThomp
in my book about … wait for it … Hanging Out. Which his magazine,
@TheAtlantic
, published an excerpt from in December 2022 (and never paid me for).
But
@DKThomp
didn’t manage to cite me or my work. Interesting.
Freaking out just a titch because I JUST SIGNED A NEW BOOK CONTRACT!
The book is called _Hanging Out_; it’s part memoir, part manifesto, and it’s coming to the world via
@melvillehouse
.
“Most STEM graduates don’t work in STEM occupations. The Census Bureau reported in 2021 that a paltry 28% of STEM grads are working in these supposedly in-demand, highly paid and important STEM jobs.”
8 years ago today, I was defending a dissertation that was kinda sorta about Edith Wharton.
And here I am today, elatedly weeping (just a little) as I work on the proofs for this:
I used to be good at dealing with rejection, but then I moved during a pandemic and lost my entire social safety net and also didn’t go outside for 2 years and now I just want people to be like decent.
I dreamed last night that I was served a calzone in a restaurant and it was filled with shredded pieces of my book manuscript.
Which is to say, everything's awesome, thanks for asking, &c.
Nobody wants this.
Nobody needs this.
Nobody asked for this.
And nobody will benefit from it, except those who do not need any more benefits in this world.
Listening to Sal Kahn
@StanfordHAI
and he confirms Khan Academy is building a “process oriented” AI writing tool that will “write with” students from conception to submission and monitor and report on all steps. I know Google is working on tools like this too
@AnnaRMills
I wrote about the collapse of face-to-face socializing in in the 21st century.
From 2003-2022, American adults reduced socializing by 30%. For teens, the decline was nearly 50%. There is no record of any period in history when ppl spent more time alone.
My only professional advice to anyone ever is to acknowledge achievements (your own & others) and offer a hearty “congratulations” whenever you can, to anyone you can.
It’s hard out there, and yet there’s so much good work that still deserves our notice and celebration.
Lol thinking about the lit academic who visited my grad school campus to give a talk, and casually mentioned that, when she got tenure, she bought herself a horse.
A.
HORSE.
Anyone who thinks the college English lit seminar is a book club has either never been to a college English lit seminar or else never been to a book club.
Thrilled to announce that the skeleton keys I wore as jewelry back in high school — because I was an odd duck — work in the doors of my new 120 year-old house.
It's a beautiful day for a BOOK CONTRACT.
Thrilled to be working w/
@noctambulate
&
@UMinnPress
on my book about Edith Wharton's library and early 20th c. bibliomania!
I dreamed my introductory lit class was way over-enrolled: there were 200+ students in it and also a couple of buffalo, and it took me three days just to do attendance.
I once joined Twitter because I thought North Dakota was kinda lonely.
Now I know I joined Twitter because adulthood is kinda lonely.
Happy NYE, everybody, and thanks for being here! 🎉 🥂
Republicans in North Dakota have killed a bill to provide free school lunch to kids in low-income families.
“I can understand kids going hungry, but is that really the problem of the school district? Is that the problem of the state of North Dakota?" said Sen. Mike Wobbema.
Let’s give a warm, public domain welcome to Wharton’s cringe-inducing novel from 1928, THE CHILDREN!
It’s about men who refuse to grow up and women who are forced to do all the growing up for them.
Muted my tweet about my amazing bookshelves because a buncha jackasses showed up and started wishing death and / or divorce on me for using the word “partner,” wow, what a world
Worst places you’ve spent a holiday, just to put our current troubles into perspective?
I’ll start: I spent a Thanksgiving sleeping on the floor of the Atlanta airport after my connection was canceled. I had $26 to my name and blew it on an extra-large margarita from Chili’s.
At the risk of sounding like an authoritarian personality, I would like to have words with whoever is responsible for this heinous feat of graphic design.
Considering quitting something — an article that’s been undergoing peer review for 4 years now, after 6 rounds of edits.
I’ve never quit anything but might just have to quit this because I’m out of energy and way way out of fucks.
A friend who works professionally as a ghost writer just told me a stunning thing: the most common genre for which ghost writers are hired is ... memoir?
Hey, I have an idea 💡:
What if—in this year of our lord 2021, while still recovering from the year of our lord 2020—we could recognize the labor of EMAIL as, well, LABOR and include it on annual faculty evals?
