My grandfather built motors that powered big machines. In a lab not so different from his workshop, my colleagues and I uncovered the assembly of the bacterial motor. Today, this discovery has been published in @NatureMicrobiol #MolecularNodes #Discovery

@MarkRober @MKBHD Something similar was launched in 2017 called the Light L16 camera. After Softbank’s acquisition, the technology was implemented in Nokia smartphones and self-driving cars. Here is a picture I took with the L16 on one of my cycling trips a few years ago.

@AtlasBeefy @ZoldenGames @NatureMicrobiol In vivo, it's quite stable, but in vitro, it tends to be very fragile and begins to degrade within the first hour. I briefly talk about it here: Hope this answers your question.

@ksc_sean @NatureMicrobiol Hi Sean, you are correct! It is like a gear where the MotAB (brown protein) moves inwards so it can keep its rotation the same (due to the uni-directional proton flow) while changing the rotation (counterclockwise to clockwise) of the flagellar motor.

This is a critical component of the bacterial flagellum, which is essentially the motor that allows bacteria to swim. This ring acts as the base for the flagellum's structure and is embedded in the inner membrane of the bacterial cell. #science #STEM #biology #BioTrivia
