Can’t believe how viral this terrible article is. Great data from great sources — and then ridiculous narratives that get
@contradicted
by the next chart one screen down. We need rigor, not zeal. I got mad and wrote this:

Y'all spoke, we listened! Better behavior on don/doff muting, better audio quality by using our mic array differently, EQ, and better gain management (including working with devs who were adding more gain than we expected). More to come on this!
Quest + Wirecutter = ❤️ Quest is probably the most wire cutting product there is. It was shocking how much the vibe changed in VR when you weren't tied to a desk or a console anymore. Take it anywhere. Be anywhere.
The Quest 2 is the most updated consumer hardware I have ever seen since it’s launch.
This thing has had more software updates than any device I have ever seen in 2.5 years.
Gotta respect that.
@elonmusk
Come on man. Every place with an outbreak has way more TOTAL deaths above normal than the official COVID counts. Every excess mortality analys shows same (NYT, economist, FT, euro papers, universities). and all the data is publicly available.
exciting news: Quest 2 is back on sale with 128GB of storage, at the old 64GB price — $299. More room for more amazing experiences. See you in Beat Saber!
Just pushed a small update to
@CubismVR
to kick of the year.
On
#MetaQuest3
you can now launch into Cubism without ever leaving MR - no more immersion-breaking black loading screens!

My top things 🧵:
1/ Super big power upgrade. Best ever graphics for standalone; lots of room for advanced Meta Reality features. Between the GPU/lenses/displays upgrades, A/B tests vs. Quest 2 are pretty stunning.
I'm excited to share: with new Meta accounts rolling out next month, you won't be required to log in to Quest with Facebook anymore. We designed the new Meta account structure to give people more flexibility and control over their VR experience.
Here's what's changing 👇🏽
Asgard’s Wrath 2 is the full-fledged VR open-world RPG I’ve always wanted to play, and for that matter it’s one of the best RPGs in any perspective I’ve played in years. Our review:
@xoalexo
@NateSilver538
To “run good” a specific poker term that means the way the cards came out has been above expectation. You “run good” or “run bad”. I’m sure it started as bad grammar but now it’s argot.
We’re taking entertainment with Quest to the skies! Travel Mode has landed in beta for Quest 2 and 3. Check it. We’re also excited to partner with Lufthansa to bring Quest 3 devices to select business class flights with custom content built for them by .
Price drop on 3/5 for two Meta Quest headsets! Quest Pro will be ~$999 and the Quest 2 256GB is now ~$429 (the 128GB is still ~$399). We always want to ship devices at a price that makes it easier for people to get into and build for VR.

Having fun working out in your Quest? Stats or it didn't happen. Now it's easy to track (and prove to your friends) what you did both in Oculus Move and in Apple Health. 💪🏼
@purplemikey
lots of stuff in the works throughout the stack🤞 huge focus for us to improve the whole complex set of interactions with you+hands/screens/room
@hmltn
This is awesome feedback -- and we're working on almost all of it. We're working on various improvements and automation for guardian and room setup, PC streaming, keyboards, your home spaces, etc. Stay tuned for lots of updates with every OS release.
The new Meta Quest Pro is finally here! We’re so excited for this device that will be a big leap for empowering people to get into the metaverse more immersively and intuitively.

One other callout that affects a small number of people: watch out for 3rd party silicone covers with only small gaps around the outer edge. Some of them cover the hidden mics in the vent near bottom center of the front faceplate.

We really want it to work with 💯 reliability — but it was not officially supported by Google (we’re working on that too!). In meanwhile improving our infra and narrowing to the options where we can guarantee stability. Investing a lot here.
@Heaney555
You're right, it shouldn't. We're doing a bunch of things in the next couple of releases to make switching faster, more seamless, and try to get rid of as many of these little frustrations as we can.
Our last big update of the year — cloud backups, but most excitingly big MR streaming improvements so people can see what’s really going on in Metaverse.
4/ Don't sleep on the Quest 2 boost. +26% CPU, +19% GPU — that's "next-gen-hardware" type of gain. For devs it'll be quite easy to drive frame rate and resolution, and many are already doing a "remaster" for textures. Will be a really good visual jump! Devs get into it :)
Meta continues to bundle the Quest 3's killer app for free with every headset purchase. It's such a great deal the company is including it with every headset through June 30. It's great to see so many people get to experience what I consider the best VR game ever made.
We're rolling out platform-level parental supervision tools to all Quest headsets and launching a new Parental Education Hub, including a guide to VR parental supervision tools from
@ConnectSafely
to help parents and guardians discuss VR with their teens.
I collected and summarized sources from last week on the total mortality from COVID. Seems there's big undercounting of deaths in Italy, Spain France -- and thus likely everywhere.
We’re learning a lot about what y'all want at different price points and we want to be nimble enough to respond to that. In particular, I'm excited to have more people discover the innovative tech of Quest Pro and how it’ll broaden development of magical MR experiences. 2/

We’re gonna keep releasing and upgrading all the stuff every month, not just three days after! Occlusion is obviously helpful in many experiences but not essential as evidenced by the many fun MR things that work quite well without. I think this is the right sequencing.
1/n Some really mind blowing technological advancements got lost in the excitement over the Meta name change yesterday. Let's start with lifelike avatars - this is an animated avatar not a video recording...
Next year you’ll be able to just join any Zoom meeting from your Horizon Workrooms room instead of your official office, den, bedroom, garage, etc. And then draw on the Zoom whiteboard as if it’s on your wall. Get ready to give people VR FOMO!
The future of meetings just became more accessible with
@Zoom
+ Horizon Workrooms for Oculus Quest 2. Early next year, you can join meetings in Horizon Workrooms via Zoom so no one gets left out of the party….errr meeting.
@DennyCloudhead
Pretty much all (or all?) on this list Oculus Publishing partnered on! We’re going hard to bring VR and MR lovers the best stuff. Rest easy: we have a ton of amazing titles on the way, and some LONG investments landing next few years. It won't feel like a slowdown. Peak ahead.
2/ So thin and small, both for headset and controllers (ringless is so good!). Both took so much work and innovation and advanced tech including AI & CV. It just feels so much more approachable now.
3/ Meta Reality will be a big category-bending thing. Most apps will benefit from VR/MR blending, whether it's just during lobbies and menus or for key features or to design the whole new app around ground-up. It feels different from when you put it on.
Workrooms is one of the best proofs of how the metaverse is already here (in patches) and how it has really unique strengths for people connecting. You gotta check it out.
You asked, we listened! 😌
Horizon Workrooms v1.2 introduces the HIGHLY requested customizable room features which include:
☑️ A wider variety of themes
☑️ Adding your logos & posters to express your teams’ culture & personality
☑️ New stand to make presenting that much better
And now you can get way more storage on Quest 2 for less -- might be a good time to load up that flash with the newly free-to-play (starting 3/9) Population: ONE!

We’re raising the price of our Meta Quest 2 headsets so we can continue investing in sustainable ways — and keep driving this industry forward ambitiously for consumers and developers. More details ⇩

Yeah, we're figuring out how to do that in practice. MR experiences vary and people are starting to flow fluidly between MR/VR, which is tricky. I totally agree that if you're in a mode where you can see all around you, Guardian should be a lot more chill.
This BBC advertising for Dracula is genius. A series of bloody stakes protruding from a billboard. Seemingly random, until darkness falls and they begin to cast a shadow. Fabulous.
@Heaney555
Yeah, you're probably right that we should make both easier to find but not sure about ideal place for it. We're already working on Passthrough toggle improvements. Will talk to the team about casting.
Quest Pro feels super different in a way that's easy to experience but hard to explain. That's been the reaction of almost everyone who's put the prototypes on (internally of course) over the last year+. Super glad to see folks on the outside feel it too!
Quest Pro’s biggest shift as I keep using it: it really does feel more like “VR glasses,” even if it’s a large headset. The way it rests and looks over the eyes, peripheral vision around it. Like it’s a prototype for that concept
@CaseyNewton
This is a pretty standard comment by software engineers 🤷♂️. Heard it a lot! But usually people are polite enough to be like “super good, but weird UI” 😂
@Heaney555
@boztank
@technogoy
Yeah, we're trying to find the right balance but we may need to tune this more. Do you feel you're in any danger of striking the desk when the guardian pops up? Or do you feel it's certainly in the clear? How much narrower would you make the "annoying zone"?
@Heaney555
@pvncher
Sorry, just to be clear, what kind of thing exactly are you asking for? identifying QR codes in the scene? Dev provides image and we tell you where in scene it's located?
This is a great video. A lot of temperature jumping around but the trend is clear. And it does seem slightly wider recently too which means more cold spells.
Animation shows the distribution of annual average temperature anomalies due to global warming from 1850 until today. Well animated climate data. Source:

The issue is that "passthrough apps" can be any blend from 1% passthrough, 99% VR to the opposite. Or, 100% VR, then a 95% passthrough level/mode, then back to VR. We have more (amazing) hybrid content like than any platform. Working on a scalable solution.
Huge upgrade to🙌 tracking. Clapping, grasping, gripping hands together, the "steeple", holding objects. The most interesting hand gestures and poses involve a lot of the hand being covered. Hands 2.0 so expressive.

From that article: 20% of deaths age 50-70, 65% 70+. “Having an underlying illness” is just being older. For 50-70, 20% diabetes, 50% hypertension (CDC). How do you protect a group that big? People 50+ are a third of our country.
The standalone color passthrough is IMO the most promising direction for MR. I tested for fun some ideas over the weekend, the magic is there and it’s mesmerizing to play with.
Anyone with a Quest PRO who would like to try this?
