As a nation they’ve been collectively forgiven for twice plunging Europe into years of misery; and for either participating in or acquiescing to the destruction of an entire race of people. I think they should be expected to put up with some light banter in return.

Germany had plans to turn Britain effectively into an open air concentration camp if it won the war in 1941; but Britain won so Germany has to listen to a slightly hurtful football song. Seems fair.

I’d tell them the British state survived a century when many others fell into tyranny because the political nation was embodied by a crown in parliament - symbolic power and imperial grandeur to which politicians could never aspire; autocratic legitimacy they could never have.

Votes at 16 is gerrymandering. They want to force 16 year olds to stay in school until 18, increase the age at which you can drive, increase the age at which you can smoke, reduce criminal responsibility for young adults…but for some totally unknown reason they want them to vote

@iainmartin1 It’s totally over the top to describe votes at 16 as ‘gerrymandering’. If your objection to it is only or mostly that it might disadvantage your ‘side’ then you are also open to the accusation of gerrymandering. Argue it on its merits

The Royal Family recreated itself as an upper middle family during the 19th and 20th centuries. The imagery went from the peak of court fashion to a lifestyle that would be recognisable to minor gentry - shooting, walking, stalking, sailing.

I think most people outside Number 10 managed just about to grasp that the purpose of lockdown was to prohibit “the norm” and office “prevailing cultures”. That’s just what the legislation was for. Somewhat surprised this came as a shock to the people who took the decision.

1 Parliament can make and unmake any law it wishes. 2 It’s not ‘universally accepted’ Parliament cannot abolish JR. It’s a fringe theory based on a throwaway comment in Jackson. 3 Judges answer to law; law is made by Parliament; the masses are represented in the dominant HoP

Every earl, duke, marquis, viscount and baron has the same passport to parliament: blood and, in most cases, their status as firstborn sons. Whether measured by age, education or experience, they do not resemble those on whose behalf they make laws.

An enormous victory for the anti-semites. The Chief Rabbi gagged from speaking out on a range of issues that concern British Jews because his voice needs to be preserved to speak out against domestic violence against Jews. The lesson: attack the Jews and they’ll shut up.
