Would have been simpler and safer to put £2k a month in everyone’s bank account, freeze all mortgages and tell everyone except essential workers to stay home.
Glum Brits waiting in static line at Oslo airport for an analogue stamp, while EU and Norwegian passengers sweep through the digital barriers. Embarrassing Brexit self-harm in one shot.

“No government could commit to an outcome without knowing what it is...” so said Theresa May about the indicative votes. But that is precisely what the governmnent did with the referendum.

The sight of men with guns seizing unarmed young women and old people as hostages should finally end the idea that Hamas is a resistance movement. This is militant antisemitism and misogyny. To describe it any other way demeans the very concept of resistance.
NEW: The 22-year old woman who was arrested after holding up this anti-monarchy placard at St Giles' Cathedral has now been CHARGED “in connection with a breach of the peace",
@PoliceScotland
confirm.
Will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.
Stonewall is comparing women defending sex-based rights to anti-semites and anti-vaxxers are wearing yellow stars, all - they say - to defend their causes. All they are actually doing is exploiting Jewish history and demonstrating how little they care about the feelings of Jews
Finally, this story is getting the coverage it merits. Now we need to hear from the people who represent the people in care homes

Very impressed by quietly spoken VC of

Adam Tickell on
@BBCr4today
unconditionally defending the free speech of

Wonder if the Brexiteer ultras really want to leave the EU or would prefer to be able to moan about it for ever. They feel more confortable in opposition - a bit like the Corbynistas.

@Baddiel
It really is a strange kind of tyranny that allows ill-informed and dangerous people to gather freely in large numbers in the centre of a capital city.
Hey
@BootstrapCook
, where is the best place to buy your book? On second thoughts, shouldn’t the government be printing it in industrial quantities and sending it to every household in the country.
I have been really impressed by the way
@johnsweeneyroar

Our journalist Victoria Roshchyna is held captive by the Russian occupiers. She was reporting from hotspots in Eastern and Southern Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war. On March 12, we couldn't contact Victoria 1/3
There was a moment when it became possible to call the leader of the opposition antisemitic without any fear of legal comeback. It was obvious Corbyn was finished at that point. Have we reached the same point with Johnson and corruption accusations?
This has echoes of

Two Jewish women not allowed to write about left wing antisemitism or the battle for female rights.
Left wing female journalists are increasingly having to leave their publications because of their opinions.
Shameful journalism.
The memorial bench for Sean Hughes in Highgate Wood. He would have appreciated my younger son’s comment during a walk as a toddler: “Why do so many people die on benches?”
Dear

As someone who served in

, I was astonished by your video praising the Taliban this week.
So here's one of mine with a simple question for you, and your conscience👇
I will never forget the solidarity
@suzanne_moore
showed me when I left the New Statesman and started
@CreativeSoc
. She is a proper old-fashioned comrade.
This press conference is a disaster. The arrogance of using up everyone’s time in this way, is quite extraordinary. He was not in a particularly complicated, difficult or exceptional position. He was in a privileged position which he used to maximum advantage.

What is the correlation between backers of Truss and backers of Johnson? And shouldn’t that disqualify them from deciding the next Prime Minister of the UK?
It has taken a couple of days to let Jodie Comer’s performance sink in. This was an extraordinary thing to witness. I feel very lucky to have been there. Whole row of Scouse women next to me in tears afterwards

I was told at university that my academic writing was too journalistic . Proud to be able to say I am now an academic at
@Uni_of_Essex

I left the

as political editor because I refused to be told what to write by an immensely wealthy individual who threatened to sue. The owners and editor failed to back me.
I am personally delighted that

is standing in Finchley & Golders Green. But it is disgraceful she was driven out of

Very impressed by

I expect Boris Johnson will use his Telegraph column this week to criticise the use of the UK libel laws to silence investigative journalism
@carolecadwalla
I am quoted in the piece saying: “This is an unwarranted attack on freedom of expression and would potentially criminalise every student radical and revolutionary dissident. It has never been the British way to arrest people for thought crime.”
Bumped into my barber today (at a distance). His shop was a dynamic, friendly, youthful addition to our high street. He looked haunted and sad - savings gone, really struggling to survive. This pandemic is destroying his business. Didn’t know what to say to him.

So much of this crisis can be traced back to the refusal of our political class to engage with Europe (starting with learning the languages).
The events of the past few years just make me think what an extraordinary feat Neil Kinnock achieved in wrenching the Labour Party away from the hard left and making it so nearly electable.
@NudderingNudnik
I am not Jewish, but when I was appointed Political Editor of the Jewish Chronicle one of my best friends from university stopped talking to me. Still makes me very sad.
I remember talking to Alistair Darling on the night it looked like the cash machines would stop working. “You look very calm,” I said. He raised a familiar eyebrow: “Now is not the time to panic.”

It is appalling. Especially in light of the charity’s record of failing to deal with the horrific abuse of women revealed by whistleblower Helen Evans.
We worked with

Why, at no point, did anyone in Bailey’s team say: “Hey Shaun, you do realise that putting your foot on the face of a Muslim man is really, really insulting...” Astonishingly unfunny.
I am determined to track down relatives of Solomon Steckoll, who wrote this extraordinary book in 1982 outlining Nazi atrocities carried out on British soil. He was a South African/Israeli archaeologist/journalist described as “a most unusual man”. He lived in

Anti-war solo pickets like this are popping up in cities across Russia. It’s not much but they’re arrested almost immediately, often upon leaving their homes when the cops know to expect them. Here’s Sofya Rusova, co-chair of Russia’s Trade Union of Journalists.
BREAKING: Author Salman Rushdie has been attacked as he was about to give a lecture in western New York. An

Following some interesting reaction to my retweet of

One suggestion is that journalists should publish threatening letters from lawyers representing the ultra rich. They are marked Private and Confidential, but they are not.
Consistently wise words from

on

on “Planet Windsor” and the viciousness of the attacks on Harry. Briefings from the palace and “execrable” press coverage mask the realities of racism and misogyny.
There is no doubt that Boris Johnson’s tone has changed. But there is no market-based solution to this crisis. It is morally indefensible to advise people to avoid social contact without ordering pubs, restaurants and theatres to close.
@NickCohen4
@MitchBenn
It’s quite good that they are identifying themselves with these masks though. Maybe there could be a whole series: “I’m full of self-pity and don’t care about you”; “Your granny can take a hike”; “I pontificate about science without any evidence or knowledge”.
Completely inexplicable to me that
@jeremycorbyn
doesn’t put out a simple and unequivocal message of support for
@lucianaberger

Not sure Jacob Rees-Mogg’s patronising approach to this interview on

@MishalHusain
being admirably patient.
Reposting this as there have been some interesting developments… the grave is still unmarked but two years i am determined to help get a release for a documentary about Kuznetsov’s grave.
This is the unmarked grave of Anatoly Kuznetsov in Highgate Cemetery, London. The author of the masterpiece Babi Yar about the massacre of Ukrainian Jews in 1941 surely deserves a headstone.
