A long shot .. can anyone help me locate this portrait of my mother? It was stolen while stored in a garage in London in the 1990s and most likely ended up in a skip. But if not - it would be amazing to find it. Artist was Bernard Hailstone
“This is the most serious epidemic since the end of WWI. You can use the police to enforce emergency measures, and call out the military to support.”
Rory Stewart says the government has responded too slowly to coronavirus, and that tough measures need to be taken now.
This happened today .. appreciative and rather overwhelmed as I am, I do want to say that in broadcasting, every ‘individual’ contribution comes amid a team effort. So - thank you colleagues and friends

@BBCRadio4
And of course thank you

Just been talking to
@AzeemRafiq30
for tomorrow morning’s
@BBCr4today
. Clearly exhausted by the intensity of the last 24 hours but also relieved .. he talks about having his hopes and dreams in cricket shattered - and the actions now needed. Across the game
George was a trailblazer as well as outstanding journalist and human being. I remember seeing him on screen as Africa Correspondent in the 90s, the first Asian foreign correspondent I had seen on British television. He inspired so many of us
I *think* this was floor manager Niall confirming we were off air .. thank you to the editorial and production team who worked so hard on this in recent days - plus the audience, questioners and the debaters themselves. Picture by maestro

: There is a blocking minority in the Commons for every type of Brexit .. the most sensible path for both Leavers and Remainers could be a second referendum. 'The public will not forgive us if we don't level with them about the difficult choices'
The mob shouted ‘Where is Mohammed’ and then smashed his shop’s windows (Belfast, below).
And this morning
@bbcr4today
we have been hearing from Muslims in Middlesbrough who were threatened in their homes, and had property & livelihoods destroyed
The tree that our guest editor Mina Smallman hopes will bring shade and comfort close to where her daughters were murdered. Such care and thoughtfulness to her from these two gentlemen who planted it
Gathering my thoughts about Bill, simply too much to express. Generous colleague, outstanding individual professionally and personally. What a beautiful relationship he and Sesi had: a true partnership through life.
George Osborne says the 'massive mistake' made by the government was to dismiss the views of Remain voters & go for '100% Brexit'. Rather than trying to prove her leave credentials he says Theresa May should have begun with the conciliatory position she's now come to

I read this and then realised it was the same Irfan Halim I knew as a little boy when our fathers were doctors in S Arabia. He grew up to be one himself and now he is gone. Thinking of his family: his wife & their children, his mother, sister & brother.

One deeply disturbing video after another is emerging from India - this looks back and explains what we are seeing. A vital read featuring

The Muslim man in the video who heroically sacrificed himself to stop the terrorist has been identified as Naeem Rashid from Abottabad, Pakistan. His son Talha was also killed in the attack.

I will never be able to handle a pomegranate as Nazanin does … here she is with Ottolenghi because at times in prison she was able to cook and she made one of his aubergine and pomegranate dishes. A conversation about food as comfort but also the grim reality of hunger strike
The hotel where I stayed with a BBC team in 2018 after a reporting trip to southern Israel and Gaza - one of the rooms on the beach side was our on-air studio
Thinking back to all the occasions we looked through the glass to see Richard Ratcliffe in our green room, waiting patiently to come on air, finding the right words amid a diplomatic minefield & personal nightmare. Last time he brought Gabriella. Finally - they get their reunion
NEW: Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe - and another detained British-Iranian Anousheh Ashouri - are heading to a Tehran airport to leave the country, according to Reuters.
The news agency says it's got the information from their lawyer Hojjat Kermani.
There is so much more I could have said .. Uzbekistan is where Ulugh Beg’s observatory was mapping stars in the 15th century, and the native region of the man from whom we get the word ‘algorithm’. But mainly this is about travels with my mother!
Here’s what
@MuslimCouncil
has asked the Conservatives to look into. Rather than engage, Sajid Javid says they don’t represent Muslims in this country (although they are an umbrella body for 500 orgs)
At a temporary UK visa processing facility in Poland - frustrations mounting as people waiting here have little clarity about when they will be seen, some have travelled for hours to get here
Olha, draped in the Ukrainian flag, is outside Przemysl station where trains arrive from Lviv. She is here for her mother who arrived earlier but is also offering 40 places on a bus to Germany where she has families willing to host

To her family and friends, I'm so sorry for your loss. Saskia's dissertation was so good that I cried with pride when I marked it. I hope

Moments after lifting the trophy Siya Kolisi spoke of growing up wondering where his next meal was coming from. Here’s his extraordinary story - deeply significant for South Africa and beyond 🔽
Joy - a woman came up to me on the Tube today and said ‘I love your book’! Thank you, stranger. Meanwhile, I am becoming more brazen about walking into bookshops. Today

Honoured to be involved in this morning’s ceremony in Parliament Square, placing the image of a woman alongside the men who stand there for the first time. Wonderful to think of Millicent Fawcett looking out at the building that represents our democracy
Female author AND two women (my grandmothers) on the cover. This is the bound proof (thank you
@4thEstateBooks
) and yes I am banking on both men and women picking it up..
They mentioned this in the Great Lives anniversary programme and it’s really interesting. There’s a similar reluctance by men to buy books by female authors.
Have been thinking in recent days about another August - 1947 - and how both my parents ended up on planes rather than the notorious trains across the new India-Pakistan border. It was a lifeline made possible by British senior officers in the final days of British India
The morning part of ‘election night’ on

for me .. this was tremendous fun and also fascinating to see how a cover shoot works.
@KayBurley
- didn’t we earmark the gold skirt for

Forget The Morning Show; Election Night 2024 is better, rawer, real… and totally British. In the thick of it all, three formidable broadcast legends:

Congratulations Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle on their engagement!
His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle this afternoon visited Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden for a photocall to mark the happy news.
It is done. Dry, mainly scissors with a bit of clippers: curly hair thankfully forgiving. Worst part was attitude of clients eg ‘You’re not qualified and I’m scared’
The gold & silver for Pakistan and India in the javelin has become memorable beyond the event: for what we then learned about the relationship between the 2 (Chopra publicly saying Nadeem should be helped to get a new javelin in time for Paris) - and the way their families spoke
In this first week since ‘Broken Threads’ was released I’ve had some heartfelt responses: I appreciate them all! Here’s my great-aunt Anne, 99, when I took an early copy to her in Oldham. Thanks to her I understood my grandmother Mary’s early life and the Quinn family’s trials
It was an honour for me to play the piano at George Alagiah’s memorial service. Such an emotional, uplifting celebration of his life. Here’s the montage of George at work and at home for which I provided a musical accompaniment.
Finally ready to share something I have been working on for a while and thinking about for even longer .. so here’s a 🧵 about ‘Broken Threads: My Family From Empire to Independence’ 🔽

So happy for the Yousafzais that they have been able to see Swat once again. When I stood outside their former home in 2013 it was hard to imagine the day Malala could return. Here’s what I wrote then

"Racism exists, but it is not welcome here." New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern received a standing ovation as she addressed the crowd during a national memorial service honoring the 50 people who died in the mass shootings in Christchurch
