I got to contribute to this article in Reuters by @Ewingsports "There's lots of serious questions around the erosion of player agency and the long-term impact of players being forced to prioritize short-term performance over long-term well being."

Suggestions for 2019. Lets stop using the words 'elite', 'talent' and 'a product of ..'(kids are not products) in connection to kids football. They are used as a sales pitch and shameless self promotion. Remove these words and see what happens to the culture over time

Why an early selection can make you look stupid. In Iceland we take decision regarding elite selection very late. All players get the same coaching until 15/16 years old.

When I was a young boy and we had to pass from one cone to another in training. It was so boring. We used to say: “Coach, when are we going to play a game?” “make your players love the game.” After that, you can help them learn the game.

If a club is claiming to be experts at early talent ID and you do some research and you see this, then what does it say about what they are actually identifying in young children? U7: 10 of 15 - from Q1 and 2; U8: 13 of 15 - from Q1 and 2; U9: 11 of 15 - from Q1 and 2;

Something for data analysts in football to consider. There is no context in data. "it is evident that space is not the same if the player between the lines is Messi or someone else." The big challenge will no longer be in analysis, but in methodology!

1. This resonates with the work that @JimiVaughan and I have done. Deep cultural tendencies in (youth)football to copy-paste has arguably led to the emergence of a type of methodological imperialism, a globalised copy-paste methodology. (see translation)
