Have worked with a fair few kids now that most traditional set ups/coaches would have considered โuncoachableโ. It usually means โtheyโ are not listening to โmeโ and doing what โIโ want. These kids are now training and playing matches regularly. Itโs not one size fits all

Does our obsessive focus on the development of sport skills mean that we ignore the โhuman skillsโ needed for athletes to flourish?
Agree wholeheartedly....isnโt it fascinating that this idea is still seen as radical in some parts of the pedagogical community?
For clarity I would replace the word โtaughtโ with โdesigned into the learning experienceโ.

Selecting and deselecting young people has its own moral problems - but the loss of childhood is something that is an often overlooked & pernicious practice in too many talent systems!
"I was concerned about the amount of time my grandson was staying away from his friends because of his time at the Academy. There is a bubble these kids end up in. Some are travelling 60 minutes to training and are losing contact with their mates at home."

Whether or not the word โeliteโ should apply to those that arenโt at the very top of their field is missing the point. They are children...many of them are only just able to walk. They stop and pick daisies or look up in the sky to admire the clouds....and that is OK!!
