For avoidance of any doubt not in any way an official Lib Dem account. It represents views of Simon McGrath. Promoted by Lib Dems, 270A The Broadway, SW19 1SB
Congratulations to Lib Dem peer Floella Benjamin who has been made a member of the Order of Merit -the most prestigious honour in the country, restricted to 24 people and in the personal gift of the Monarch
5 of us out canvassing in Wimbledon this morning - no-one mentioned Ed Davey or the Post Office. Plenty of people mentioned kicking out the Tories though
I am not in favour of legalising cannabis myself but its Party policy and I can’t see how Ed Davey can be in favour of it and voting for the smoking ban.
Some really intersting canvassing today in Wimbledon Village ( the only ward left with 3 Tory Cllrs). An awful lot of Tory voters now undecided or LD. One couple very clear it was Bravermann who was the final straw
Not going to make any predictions for Mid Beds because the canvassing I did was not a big enough sample. But the reason people there should vote Lib Dem is simple : we are the only Party with sensible proposals for change, for more freedom, more new homes and a stronger economy
In Merton the Tories are standing as "Local Conservatives". Do they really think voters are therefore not going to associate them with the liar in Downing St ?
Its International Dog Day, so to celebrate here is a picture of
@EdwardJDavey
with our dogs Cora and Nellie. Picture taken on Wimbledon Common when Ed came here on may 6th to celebrate our success in the local elections.
Lambeth has 27,000 people on its waiting list- the Green candidate in the Vauxhall by election has a leaflet with 8 sets of new homes they have opposed. Thank goodness there is an excellent Lib Dem candidate - Fareed Alderechi
look I get that Labour will do whatever it takes to win the next election. But Rachel Reeves saying that they will not allow asylum seekers to work - at a time when we have shortage of employees - really is extraordainary
Every prediction has Lib Dems ahead in Wimbledon and every tactical vote website recommends a vote for
@PaulKohlerSW19
. So looks like some Labour canvassers are simply lying.
I hope the Scots don't vote for Independence. But there is something very odd about saying that a Scottish Government, elected on a basis of holding a referendum is forbidden from doing so. How is that democratic ?
Great to be out canvassing with
@markpack
this morning. I hope he got as positive response on the doorstep from people planning to vote for
@PaulKohlerSW19
as I did
Very encouraging canvassing in Merton Park in Wimbledon. Our vote holding up, Tories fed up with Truss and may well vote for us and Labour voters know who they need to vote for to get the Tories out. One even quoted the tory majority over
@PaulKohlerSW19
(628) to me !
a really interesting morning at the unveiling of a plaque by
@EnglishHeritage
to Dadabhai Naoroji the first Indian Liberal MP. Glad to be there would our Council group leader
@JulieIreland
, Party VP
@amnajahmad
and local resdient
@NeilStockley
Let's be clear: the ONLY reason you would add Equalities to the Brief of the Trade Minister, Kemi Badenoch is if you intend to use her to front a culture war running up to the next General Election.
Liverpool Lib Dem Leader,
@CarlCashman
is shouted down at a Palestine Solidarity Campaign rally outside the Crown Court in the city centre in April at which he had been invited to speak. His crime?
Saying this, "While we condemn the Netanyahu government, let us also condemn the
Excellent canvassing today in Wandle ward in Wimbledon. Always great not only to find lifelong Labour voters who say they will be voting for
@PaulKohlerSW19
but who quote the size of the tory majority over us - 628, as the reason why
Latest Labour leaflet in Wimbledon contains a fictitious bar chart, two lies about the lib dems and a lie about who has kept the police station open. Just what one would expect in fact
A great action day in Cannon Hill ward in Merton yesterday - a sign of how the other parties are running scared is the extraordinary amount of lying they are both doing about us. But was great to hear from residents about all the work that
@JeniferGouldCH
is doing locally.
Labour Cllrs at Merton Council congratulating themselves on the All England Club giving tickets for Ukrainian refugees (which is good). But no mention is was
@PaulKohlerSW19
who then (successfully) asked them to give tickets to Afghan and other refugees
lots of Merton Labour party members in Hastings and Rye today supporting fomer Merton Cllr Helena Dollimore who is their PPC. Not wasting their time in Wimbledon which they know they won't win (but can stop the LDs winning)
Big increase in the projected Lib Dem vote in yesterday's YouGov MRP for Wimbledon. Turns out that they have just started asking people how they will vote and are giving them the names of the actual candidates. Reflects how popular
@PaulKohlerSW19
is
I have no time for Labour but to spin their Shadow Minister saying they wouldn’t be able instantly to move asylum seekers off the barge, as there being the same as the Tories is dishonest
"Does the prime minister think I'm a fool?"
That was Conservative MP Aaron Bell's question to the PM as he recalls attending his grandmother's funeral with only ten people due to Covid restrictions.
Johnson says he is "very sorry for misjudgements that may have been made."
Last night Lab Merton Council voted through change which means they can block cllrs from seeing some cttee papers without a 'need to know'. They rejected Lib Dem proposal that at least 1 Cllr from each group would always be able to see all papers. What are they trying to hide ?
I agree we need to spend more on defence. But the best and easiest way to do this is to increase our GDP through rejoining the single market , then a 2% , or 2.5% figure will be much bigger
Boundary changes out:very clear who the challengers to the Tory MP here in Wimbledon are. 18 Lib Dem Cllrs, 4 Tory, 2 Residents Assoc, 2 Independent and 2 Labour.
#VoteLibDem
This is an extraordainary tweet. surely having a word with the woman involved would be a better option. By what right can the police confiscate someone's property like this ? and why tweet about it ?
Concerns were raised regarding a female using an e scooter to transport a young child on a daily basis.
@GlosPolSpecOps
OT61 attended and observed 4 yr old being transported in this way and Vehicle seized. Thanks to the public for making us aware.

The by election in Kingston at the moment is a really important one for Lib Dems to go and help. The ward elected one LD and one Kingston Independent in May ( the LD has stood down) and the Independents are running an utterly vile campaign against our candidate Mahmood Rafiq.
Plenty of talk ( rightly) about effect of increases in energy prices on households and a bit about business. But little on schools - here in Merton will be at least an extra £2m a year - need urgent support for schools otherwise there will be severe consequences
Merton Labour got angry last night at our revealing they had spent £230,000 of residents money on refurbishing their own offices. including new chairs at £640 each & a ‘tea point’ for £5,000 ( there is a kitchen a few feet away). A Tory Cllr described this “ trivial”
Last year the uk population increased by 660,000 people. Fine. Lib dem policy on asylum seekers would increase net immigration. Also fine. Whats not fine is opposing building new homes for these people to live in
some of us have been blocked by Liz for years ! I was blocked after I said that her view that the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 was a mistake was ..a bit odd.
Good canvassing in Wimbledon this morning - the few Labour voters I spoke to very clear that the only way to have change here is to vote for
@PaulKohlerSW19
In one of those 'you couldn't make it up ' moments, Sadiq Khan has a new podcast called 'Clean the Air'. This is the man who is forcing through the highly polluting Silvertown Tunnel
I made a complaint to IPSO about the Telegraph wrongly saying LD Conf passed a motion "urging anyone in the party who didn't subscribe to full self ID and the wider trans agenda to leave the party". Glad to say they have accepted this was not true
I was very pleased with my speech at Merton Council proposing we spend £400k to help local families affected by the 2 child benefit cap. Labour voted it down.
At last week's Merton Council meeting Lab Cllrs said that their suppporters were happy with £229,000 being spent on refurbishing two rooms only Labour Cllrs can use. We have been out this weekend delivering these leaflets in Labour wards and finding out what voters really think
Fun morning in the sun (it's hot out there!) speaking to people in the parts of Kingston moving into the Wimbledon Parliamentary constituency at the next election.
I am honoured to have been selected for the new constiuency of Kensington & Bayswater.
Thank you to our members and to all the brilliant candidates involved in the selection process.
I look forward to working hard to meet the challenges ahead.
Next time labour complain about bar charts show them this from Wimbledon. The actual 2019 result was LD 628 behind the Tories. A voter showed me this leaflet this morning ( voted lab last time,ld next time) and asked if Labour really think people will believe it
Delivered by me personally in Merton Park ward, street by street, door to door like the pavement politics I have been used to since 2003 winning six times over the Tories and Liberals to be a councillor for past 20 years with a record 10 of those years as the Council Leader.
Making room for tax cuts by cutting benefits ( which is what the Government is rumoured to be considering) would be appalling. I hope if they are thinking this way they reject the idea
Just four mentions of the Coalition from Merton Labour group so far at this Council meeting. Their record was 17 but the evening is young. Perhaps we should talk about the hundreds of thousands of dead in Mr Blair’s illegal war
Great evening yesterday with Team Wimbledon and
@PaulKohlerSW19
in Vauxhall helping Fareed Alderechi get elected. I was very struck by residents comments about the awfulness of how the Labour Council deals with housing problems in the council owned properties.
A good result for the Lib Dem team in Lambeth last night. Its to be hoped this will be a wake up call to Lambeth Labour, who may actually start listening to residents and dealing with some of the many many council housing issues which our campaign uncovered
Great quote from Ed Davey : " One reason I’m a liberal is I believe in things like free trade, competition, and free enterprise. ........ I make no apologies for being a liberal who cares about people less well off”
one of the points people calling for return of capital punishment miss is that the jury may not have found her guilty if they had known she would be killed as a result
Great to hear confirmation at Merton’s budget meeting that after a 9 year campaign from the Lib Dems the budget includes paying outsourced care workers, security staff and cleaner the London Living Wage. We finally shamed Labour into doing it
