Your subs will cut corners if you don’t know how a job is supposed to be installed/performed.

You need a production manager, and badly.
Somebody to schedule with the customer, order supplies from the contracts, coordinate the crews, update PM’s on changes, ect.
You can do everything very average, or you can hire key positions that let you be great.

If you were ever in sales, you know that if you make the customer feel like they have to qualify themselves for your business, you got them. Even if you’re higher than their other two bids

Residential/commercial roofing. 2 office staff, 6 salesmen/project managers. Sub out crews (use the same guys for 6 years). Margin is around 40-50%. New construction or very large jobs vary from 15-25%. My salesmen make 10% of the gross contract

When I was a roof salesman/PM I brought in $1.5 mil my first 6 months(revenue). This was residential.
One commercial roofing salesman can do $10mil+ every year if they have “it” and the connections.
Now I own a company that hires those salesmen.

Main reason is because our government is in too much debt (need to inflate our way out), and the wealthy control politicians (they want their assets to keep going up in value).

Yes, after they have success, your metric works fine. In the early years of their becoming successful, a nice pickup would be considered a tool. They will likely sell 25-30% more jobs having a nice pickup. The difference easily pays above and beyond for their vehicle payment

Everybody I employ is 1099. They like the higher pay/write-off ability, it’s a major benefit for us as a business. Can also get rid of them at any time for any reason.

I went to church with my wife and 3 kids, met friends and family there, came back home and cooked burgers for everybody while we’re enjoying football.

I have a 6,3,and 10 month old. My wife and I have sex at least 5 times a week, often times more. Kids don’t need to be an excuse to not enjoy each other.

I was only able to take the leap into starting my business because my wife made 100k at the time. This was when I was 30.
When you are older and have a family, the risk is very hard. Not many will do it, even if talented.

Gotta know the industry you’re starting in very well, wear a lot of hats for a while, be a hustler, but probably the best path to creating a successful business and getting rich!
