On this week's internet culture review:

3. Thread on TikTok videos
TikTok is an app. It's very similar to Vine. Folks use it to create and share short videos that are hilarious and often hard to understand unless you are familiar with the meme. I'll try my best to explain my favs. In the meantime, download the app because it's so good.

No, it didn’t. That was a very limited edition.
The products are from 2020, weren’t available in most countries where IKEA is present and then only in selected stores. Also not on their online stores, with the full collection only lasting a couple of months.

Twitter will get torched for not stopping this kind of behaviour, but it’s worth noticing that it remains the most ‘open’ social platform, allowing third-party analysis such as this.
FB+IG have been closing down access to their platforms/APIs, becoming even bigger black boxes.
Fake accounts infest the world’s social media platforms, deployed by governments, celebrities, criminals and entrepreneurs. Nearly 15% of Twitter’s active users may be bots.

Small correction: it wasn’t iOS/Android only and their success owes a lot to that.
Early on they had clients for BB/Windows/Symbian, enabling growth around the world by allowing platform interoperability, while competitors focused on western markets/OS.

Facebook becoming the North Korea of the Internet, even less open to the outside.
In the long-term the fix is way worse than the issue, closing down access and independent analysis of abuse, while reinforcing Facebook’s monopoly and profitability.
