A bittersweet sight when they pulse and swerve as one like that. From one viewpoint it looks like beauty, magic, music. From another: death and geometry of the selfish herd. They only do that out of terror. You can see the sparrowhawk going for the kill around 10-14 s
I spent the evening standing in the freezing cold, in a lay-by near Whitehaven #Cumbria. I doubt I'll ever witness anything more remarkable than a #murmuration. Stunning.

@akirschel @evornithology @baldymomx2 @2wsphotography @Au_Erithacus Best time of year varies by location and goals, but as top destinations for newcomers I would agree with South Africa (including Kruger) in Nov-Dec, or N Tanzania (ideally including Serengeti, but $$$), with timing variable depending on what you want to see. Have fun!

@JLowenWildlife @moffstuff There is. Count me in for Merveille du Jour, Clifden Nonpareil, Emperor Moth, hawk moths, Comet Moth, Luna Moth, etc. I love the rest too but I'm trying not to get into them until I retire!

@Zoologicall @PLOSBiology Very good point! Fieldwork written up in books & ornithological journals, genetic sequencing for 1000s species, DNA parentage analyses, specimens collected & measured in 80+ museums ... this is built on the work of a vast number of zoologists over last 250 years. Respect! 🧪🌍
