This is primarily due to the high churn rate of drivers.
96% of drivers don't last until the 1 year mark.
So Uber is caught in a bit of a vicious cycle needing to advertise to recruit new drivers or bring old ones back.

What's interesting though is that on average the traditional rideshare company takes 44% of the fare.
Whether today rideshare is a true marketplace or not, that does seem like quite a high take rate for an intermediary (more than Apple's 30% toll).
The good news is the tech
Do these people not understand that the fees are paid by riders, not Lyft? It's the purest form of a marketplace that even an 8 year old could understand the unit economics in a few minutes.
