My mother contracted #measles in her pregnancy with me. I am profoundly deaf, but my eyesight & brain are unaffected. I am one of the lucky ones. #Measles kills & causes permanent disability. Get your kids vaccinated. #measlesoutbreak #VaccinesWork

Before I had my cochlear implant, I couldn’t hear things outside my flat. I’ve just been sitting listening to the tapping of rain on the window. Every tap, tap, tap of the raindrops. What a wonderful sound 💕 ☔️

It's pouring with rain outside. Just over 6 months post-implant, I'm still obsessed with the sound of rain. I'm amazed at the fact that I can sit inside, and hear the rain outside. I just LOVE that sound it makes as it taps on the window. 🥰

One year ago today, I received my cochlear implant! I’m still v dependent on lipreading, but I love the sound clarity & the surprising joy of hearing new things: rain on windows, creaking trees, running streams (+ dishwasher & washing machine beeps!) So grateful for this! 🙌

This thread on transparent face coverings highlights how many people have hearing loss & need them If you can sew, why not make a transparent mask? 🧵 A clear pencil case/ make up bag (rub bar of soap inside to stop fogging) can be used to make a clear window for lipreading 👍

By popular request. Let's do a thread on TRANSPARENT face coverings. Here's the most promising one I've seen (it's even going to be biodegradable) - but it's not available yet. Reply to this tweet if you've got a good link to a mask you can see through.

I have measles induced deafness (see pinned tweet) #Measles can result in severe complications including permanent disability, brain damage and even death. 1 in 3 who contract measles in the UK are hospitalised. Get your children vaccinated #VaccinesWork #ValueofVaccines

The @WHO has confirmed the UK has lost its ‘measles free’ status. Measles is one of the most infectious diseases known to man and lots of work is underway to combat the rise in cases. Our blog explains the current situation: #ValueofVaccines @DHSCgovuk

Beautiful day for the #ParisMarathon & delighted to finish in 3:38. Not a PB, but I’ll take that given my lack of training! Probably the prettiest marathon I’ve ever done too. Beautiful route, including parks 🌳, a chateau 🏰 and the riverside. Thank you @parismarathon ! 💕🏃‍♀️

I have to increase the program every 3/7 & do listening exercises.. The clarity of environmental sounds & speech is improving 🙂 & new sounds too! bare🦶on floorboards.. the 🚙 indicator.. the crunchiness of leaves 🍁 (& crisps!) & when I run, I can hear myself ... breathing!

So lovely to see the Queen’s corgis, Muick & Sandy, and her pony, Emma, brought out before the funeral procession to St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. 😢

Granny Grote is 91 tomorrow!... ... I bought her this lookalike gnome as a fun present (& a book & Liberty soap) ... ..as she likes gnomes & gardening... ... decided to put it in a shoebox for ease of wrapping... ... and had second thoughts... 😳🤦🏼‍♀️ (bubble wrapped instead!)

Lovely tribute to @DrJennyVaughan from @iharrijenkins at our @ImperialNHS Neurology grand round this AM reflecting on ‘What would Jenny do?’ Jenny was a valued colleague, tireless campaigner for justice in healthcare & brought her #learnnotblame ethos to our department too.

It is with a heavy heart to share that the amazing inspirational legend @DrJennyVaughan peacefully passed away yesterday, Easter Sunday, surrounded by family. ( @matt_theknife )

@trishgreenhalgh @SadiqKhan I’m a doctor. I know the science says yes to 😷. The trouble is that no-one seems to consider the fact that there are millions of deaf people like myself who absolutely need lip reading to communicate. Only one company (USA) makes transparent masks. Who is advocating for us?

Proof (if it were needed) that I have wonderful 🧠 colleagues... I was self-isolating pre-op but @NeuroDocLucia was determined to ensure I should celebrate *somehow* & she made a surprise socially distanced visit with champagne 🍾 & glasses 🥂 on Monday evening 🥰 🙌

Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh by train. Equivalent of a village service (two carriages, multiple stations are ‘request stops’), but easily the prettiest UK train journey I’ve ever been on. 🥰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
