This is what people now want from movies: Either blatant fantasy (superheroes, over-the-top action, horror) or “stringently based on a true story.” Nothing in between. (DECISION TO LEAVE and THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN are both expanding this weekend. Support the in between.)

@GuyLodge I try to see major films tabula rasa when I can, so that doesn’t seem off. And I can understand assuming TÁR to be a biopic, given the specificity of its milieu. But turning your surprise into an entire piece? (And I didn’t even note the part that most depressed me.)

Sondra Locke’s final performance was in RAY MEETS HELEN, Alan Rudolph’s first film in 15 years. It’s a deeply flawed movie, but seeing her in a sizable role again was lovely. Still a little disappointed by how few of my cinephile pals sought it out.

I like TENET more than most people I know but this is honestly better than TENET.

Genuine question: Was there *literally anything* on Quibi as well constructed as this kid’s zero-budget TikTok

Any time a movie shows someone looking through the phone book, there’s ~90% probability that a page gets ripped out. I might be lowballing that, frankly.

“What am I working on? Uh. I’m working on something that’ll change the world and human life as we know it.” “Change it a lot or just a bit? You’ll have to be more specific.” Those are the *opening lines* of THE FLY (’86). Lose the scene-setting, filmmakers. You don’t need it.

Rewatched GAME NIGHT on my flight to Toronto. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this much affection for a mainstream comedy. I can foresee myself eventually knowing it verbatim, like the FERRIS BUELLERses and GHOSTBUSTERSes of my youth.
