I am excited and humbled to share that I was recognized with twelve other educators in
@tdsb
at the 2022 Excellence Awards reception yesterday.
Amplifying and elevating student's voices and experiences through podcasting 🙌🏻
Thank you to all those that elevated my story!
I'm just getting a small glimpse of the massive undertakings administrators have to endure to get our Ontario schools ready.
They are taking on a massive responsibility to reorganize, plan and facilitate a smooth reopening on Wednesday.
Huge shout-out to administrators 🙌🏻
This year I became a Middle Years Success Counsellor to work with teachers and students to build capacity.
Today it became official that the position is being redeployed, and I will become an occasional teacher to fill vacancies in the board.
This is the state of education
When I look back at my teaching
In year one - I didn’t get it
In year 5 - I didn’t get it
In year 10 - I thought I got it but I didn’t get it
In year 15 - I got it but I didn’t realize I got it
In year 20 - I realized to get it was to stay committed to continual growth
Twenty-one years ago, I would have gone over rules and regulations until noon on the first day of school!
Today we were laughing, talking, and predicting as I used a class read-aloud before 9:30 am to ignite the vibe and energy for the year!
Year 21 - let's go 🙌🏻
What’s does alleviating teacher burnout look like...
Admin email:
Dear Teachers, share this zoom link with your class, and we will take them to play Bingo for an hour!
I have immense gratitude for the administration and educators making these types of systemic changes.
Not sure non-teachers can state that teaching has gone back to normal
As a classroom teacher of 23 years, I assure you nothing has returned to “normal.”
False narratives manufacture problems that don't exist and create an industry of fictitious problem-solvers
Sometimes new teachers reignite our passions rather than us needing to motivate them.
Schools need young, vibrant teachers coupled with the experience of veteran teachers to keep innovation flowing along with best practices.
It’s Monday, now our break begins.
A coffee with no rush, a deep breath and a chance to look at the window and appreciate, and yes we absolutely made it work this year at school
Cheers to all my fellow teachers
As a young teacher 20 years ago, I aimed to have the straightest line of students in the school to display my effectiveness.
Compliance was the tool I reached for above all else - now it's happily discarded in the trash.
As I return to being a classroom teacher, one thing I am reminded of is how difficult it is to wind down mentally and try to enjoy your lunch with some semblance of peace and revival.
I'm left to ponder...
With all that's going on, and the immense stress educators are under, why were you even meeting to alter the snow day policy?!
Who sent the email “Hey, what are you up to today? Want to change the snow policy?”
At first I said,“there’s no way I can teach a vibrant gym class remotely”
Then, we experimented & built routines.
Soon, Virtual PE class became a thing! A workout, an SEL check-in & debrief.
Now I’m worried about trying to jam in a quality PE class during 40 minutes at school.
I start the day with morning check-ins - that can last 15 minutes or the can last an hour
Follow the lead and passions of the students and let their engagement and conversation lead the way.
Today marks the final day I come to BHJMS as a Grade 8 teacher. 20+ years I have taught here! It is in this space that I grew, flourished and learned as much as the students around me.
Beaumonde has gifted me with immeasurable life experiences, and to everyone, I say thank you
Year 22 🙌🏻
I am renewed and refreshed to return to being a grade 8 homeroom teacher after a brief stint as a centrally assigned learning coach.
In that time, I learned a lot of pedagogy, a ton about the board and more about me.
Looking forward to the journey
If your understanding of education is we just need kids in the “school building,” and then all the learning and well-being will take care of itself, then you have a lot to learn about education.

Reflecting on going back to face to face learning this year
Social distancing
Masks
No rotary
No extra curricular
All the things that made face-to-face learning vibrant in middle school...stripped down to highly scripted & regulated rules.
What are we going back to?
If lessons are student-centred and driven, rich with real world connections and applications, then how do we not see this as a gateway to deep and meaningful relationships and connections?
Content is NOT a roadblock to a powerful relationship with students.
Our class Block Out Poetry for
#TruthAndReconciliation
has created spaces for reflection, questions and growth.
These final pieces are a powerful reminder on display that The Work is not done because Orange Shirt Day has passed
Feeling a mix of joy, gratitude, and excitement as we announce that our podcast has been honored with the Canadian Podcast Award for Best Educational Series! 🏆🎧 🇨🇦
@CheyandPav
Thank you to everyone who has tuned in, shared, and supported us!
🙌🏻🍾🎙️
The truth is, teachers are not afraid of new technologies such as ChatGPT.
Instead, they lack the time and resources to explore and integrate these technologies into their practice.
The teacher librarian came up to my room to share some books and resources with the class and then handed me this and said this would be perfect for your class.
Schools, classes, learning, and relationships function and grow best with a caring and dedicated teacher librarian
🙌🏻
I just received the most brilliant Google Slides presentation! It was complete with video clips, embedded hand drawings, lots of detailed, and ultimately persuasive information!
👧🏼👩🏻🦰👱🏻♀️
Turns out my girls want a dog.
🐶😒
If I were asked, I would tell new teachers that relationships are foundational, but they are unique for all students - don't force them - on your time, for your needs.
Relationships take time and are layered with complexities.
Thrilled to find out that the grant proposal I co-wrote and submitted with a colleague was awarded for our school podcast project!
I’m so proud to see that the knowledge and expertise I’ve gained over the years has helped to bring funding and equipment directly to the learners
I think I figured out why my Chromebook was unresponsive to my typing.
Have to decide what five to close 😉
If you don't have sixty-three tabs open, are you even teaching 😆
Day 1 ☑️
I talked to much 🤦🏼♂️
We stayed extra long after recess to play
and wrapped up with this exit ticket 🎟 it connection to the story “My Name is Bilal”
My name is … and I am proud of it because …
Our Podcasting Sketch notes are looking great on display and importantly have seen students using sketch noting unprompted in other learning opportunities.
When schools & administrators make the investments and honour potential learning by providing elite learning tools for students, they flourish.
Our school went all-in on podcasts, and students have been thriving, exploring and creating in that space - literally can't get enough.
I was browsing a Twitter thread recently
The administration was ALWAYS referred to as leaders, while teachers were ALWAYS identified as staff.
One is a verb and laden with positive and desirable traits, while the other is neutral.
How we centre our power resonates in many ways
We’ve hit a moment where we have no experts, no one with years of experience, no engrained infrastructure to rely upon
It’s a time for increased connections, collaboration and opportunity for success
An excellent and powerful reminder today that students are observant and aware of the subtle nuances of the space around them.
“Mr. Cheney, I noticed you hang your keys on a Darth Vader figure, so I thought you might like this - I drew it last night.”
I hung it up immediately
After 20 years of teaching, I’ve learned that labelling your food in the Staffroom fridge with your name is a sure-fire way to have it mysteriously vanish.
Try “science experiment” instead. 😉
When I see educational conferences repeating the same speakers year after year, I ponder what messages would be sent if I, as a teacher, solely elevated and amplified the same voices repeatedly in class.
One of the most effective things I've done to prep for interview night is create a table with colouring, word searches and sudoku puzzles along with picture books to create an interactive space for adults and siblings to wait with.
It's always well received and appreciated
You can get my attention with buzz words, speeches and trendy talk,
But if you want to keep my attention, I need concrete examples of it in play...
Over, and over again.
Today I began my first day as an MYSSC “Middle Years Student Success Counsellor” in
@LC1_TDSB
It was a great day of meeting new colleagues and learning and connecting with the Principals of my new schools.
Excited to get into those spaces tomorrow and start reading 😉
It took me five and a half years to finish high school while failing English with a 7% and taking it over at night school to graduate.
My mother scribed and edited all my university papers after getting in with a 62% average
So, to say I'm an author is a big deal for me 🙌🏻
Teacher tip to all the PD providers: don't tell me I should greet parents with a smile and kind words the first time I see them to build a solid relationship - I had that figured out when I was 11 years old. Let's dive a little deeper.
After reading an article on
@edutopia
about drawing ✍️ as a means to more effectively learn material. I adapated this warm up word search about VE Day to incorporate group research into 1/5 selected names or terms and then represent with a sketch that as a class we all reviewed
👩🏻🦰: Dad can I borrow your red notebook?
⛹🏼♂️: Yes, sure
👱🏻♀️: Dad where is the white and black paint ?
⛹🏼♂️: it’s in the cupboard
👧🏼: Daddy, do you have a podcast sticker
⛹🏼♂️: Yes, hold on, here it is
👩🏻🦰👱🏻♀️👧🏼: Here Dad
I recently collaborated with two
@tdsb
colleagues to write and illustrate our first picture book, “The Magnificent Microphone.” It highlights the need to elevate student's voice and choice.
The outpouring of support today has been humbling 🙌🏻🙏🏻🖤
@Alisongsv
@ETFOeducators
Today in class, we continued our conversations and work around Truth and Reconciliation with some block-out poetry!
Trying to extract and highlight the emotions when reading text and information regarding Orange Shirt Day
“Truth is emotional”
As a young teacher with a robust background in sports, I designed my class with a resounding “sports” feel.
Although that was empowering for some, it was likely alienating for most, and I’ve learned to minimize my personality when designing the class.
It's essential to celebrate teachers that do great things for learning that can be attributed to their boards, but it's equally important to celebrate great teachers doing great things for learning that aren't attached to the board.
Greatness manifests everywhere
New job and new role! One of the tasks today was to support the set up of a space for content creation as a means to expand our SAMR framework and elevate and amplify students' voices!
It's Invigorating work when your passions and expertise align with school improvement goals
Wrapped up reports cards today
Took the extra time to ensure they celebrated achievements, applauded growth and validated a year of incredible uncertainty.
They deserve to see that we have recognized this amazing growth
Teachers don't employ strategies, pedagogies, or philosophies in absolutes.
We watch and observe. Then, explore and find tools, activities, and structures that support learning.
It's an artistry of competent and caring fusion.
I was looking at all the learners wearing hoodies in class today.
This is what I see: engagement, curiosity, excitement, questioning, involvement, smiles, productivity, success, growth, leadership, ownership,
As for hoodies, Yup, we're good!
Remember that time we were told to support our mental health, engage in meaningful self-care, rest if we are feeling unwell - and then got shamed and lambasted for taking days off for doing just that?
Oh yeah, yesterday.
#OntEd
And that's a wrap on teaching in 2023
It started as an instructional coach, deteriorated into becoming an unplanned occasional teacher and culminated back in the classroom as an everyday grade 8 teacher!
I think I'm back where I belong!
🙌🏻❄️
When I walk into my Principals office and see my picture book and ETFO Voice magazine article on display, it is an overwhelming feeling of validation and immense appreciation!
This is leadership.
Early on in my teaching, students would always come back to me after a “test” and say I wish this had been asked or you didn't ask about this, Mr. C
I immediately began ended each assessment with tell me something you know about this topic that you didn't get a chance to share
I am still processing the news that mask mandates will be removed.
We spent the morning in class discussing our feelings. It was eye-opening to see the vastness of issues.
Anxiety is high, but for many reasons. It's crucial to be constantly checking in with students
There is no better way to leave a classroom for the last time than a gathering of old friends and colleagues to reminisce about 20 years together and then to write thank you and inspirational notes for all the students to receive when they return Monday with a new teacher.
🖤
My room setup continues for my return to teaching grade 8, and one fun project I began was a door magnetic poetry space with a combination of words and letters that students can explore and play with as they enter the room.
I hope someone is inspired 🙌🏻
“Children aren’t walking into our schools broken”
@camillelogan
We need to celebrate genius and accomplishments and squash the deficit lens in which we bring to our teaching and space
#PushoutVoicEd
“It’s all about relationships!” Is a statement that can so often be leveraged, turning into a competition of who can be the fastest & loudest to shout it.
Relationships take time & are established by well-developed learning opportunities, & purposeful action to form these bonds.
If you are supporting & encouraging your peers, & you end with “you got this!” be sure to also add:
“I’m here to help you do… “
“I’ll share this resource with you…”
“I’ll help you set up…”
We watched a powerful documentary on
@superfan_nav
in class today!
We spoke about community, oppression, family and resiliency in reflection.
Students applauded when t was over - they felt seen and could connect to the struggles and stigma of being an immigrant to Canada
I captured this spontaneous moment in the subway yesterday!
Mid-afternoon, and for a split second, an empty platform before the hustle and bustle ensued!
📷
Never get so sure of yourself that you think what you’re offering is all that’s needed for your students, teachers and peers.
Stay humble, seek support and include the work and voices of others
This is a collective effort
I really appreciate when twitter chat hosts and moderators take the time to ensure they interact equally with all participants and honour the stories being shared. it makes for an inviting and inspiring space to learn.
A3) 20 years in and this is a balance I have not yet mastered! Often neglecting family and my own children 👧🏼👱🏻♀️👩🏻🦰 to get something done at work or for my students.
I have work to do to keep family first or certainly better balanced
⛹🏼♂️🖤
#EducationNeverDies
🚀
After being isolated and waiting for results, I’m finally able to stroll in my community for a walk.
Learned a great deal about the stress & stigma our students might face in regards to Covid-19.
Let’s keep these things in mind for our classes, schools & communities
#OntEd
What's a Friday night work email I don't mind receiving?
“Mr. C, I wanted to tell you I got accepted to the high school I applied for and I accepted the offer”
🙌🏻
Are you curious about what happened in chapter 4 of our class read-aloud Rebound?
You can check out these stunning and vibrant sketchnotes to help guide you through that narrative.
🙌🏻
Our sketch notes, designed to capture the essence and themes surrounding the latest portion of our class read-aloud, are starting to come in, and they are looking AWESOME!
Symbols, lines, arrows, words, quotes and colour
🙌🏻
I received an email today from a student I taught 21 years ago.
She assumed I wouldn’t remember her but wanted to reach out and apologize for one negative moment
Without hesitation, I accepted but assured her I remembered her and was grateful she reached out.
Running is tough but have completed my first two 5K runs since knee surgery and two missed summers of ball
Slow and wincing along the way but felt good to get back to some old routines
🏃
We are excited and thrilled to have been invited to be the opening day Keynote for the upcoming Saskatchewan Teacher Federation IT Summit.
Thank you to the organizers that valued our insights & experiences as classroom teachers to share our stories to kick off this year's event.
Our class today took some real “action” in Social Justice. After participating and hearing the story of
@Bilqis_AbdulQ
they were shocked to hear the follow up news of her rejected residence status
Today we began writing our letters of support and testimonials of her impact
One thing I have learned as a classroom teacher for over twenty years is that having colleagues, peers and friends you can share ideas, lessons, and frustrations with is essential
To feel comfortable and confident about assuming a new role as an occasional teacher, I got my google classroom prepped with activities
Minecraft
Google mosaic draw
15 days of journalling
Math games
Digital photgroaby
Daily STEM
🙌🏻
I have just wrapped up a week of preparation for my 22nd year of teaching!
The room looks great, and I can't wait to see how students make it their own space in the coming days!
🙌🏻
I'm only two days removed from my homeroom. Still, I have been flooded with positive messages and students actively seeking feedback on their work and this lovely message sharing this tremendous success.
I'm honoured students still feel compelled to share their accomplishments
My class has made it a thing that when I step into the room, they stop what they are doing and applaud.
It's fun and makes me smile and laugh every time
It reminds me that as much as I take on the responsibility to lift them up, they are just as purposeful in raising me up
Three days complete, and we have used Google Forms, Slides, Draw, Kahoot, Canva, Padlet along with our Virtual Library.
All cemented by content like financial literacy, one word 2022, read alouds and daily minds on.
The learning flourishes
Take a well earned rest Ontario
