Whistling Straits, circa 1994 I'm not sure Pete Dye gets enough credit for the engineering required to create The Straits out of this starting point. Basically improvising all of it. Pics from Mike O'Connor (listen to latest Feed the Ball episode) Thread (more pics) ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Bill Coore gave me a walk around Wicker Point, the new @coorecrenshaw design on Lake Martin, AL. It’s a big wooded property with long slopes, superb green locations, attractive shoreline and some old New England flair in the shaping and contour. A different look for Alabama.

Peachtree in Atlanta is often labeled the first modern, post-war course. It’s actually closer to the last Classical-era course. Modern designs would have scraped these natural movements. RTJ himself would have scraped them if built five years later. Much closer to ANGC & SoHills.

Rush was the ultimate hater. He helped define hating and cancelling. Just because he liked & played golf doesn’t make him worthy of respect. Golf needs to get over giving destructive people a pass just because they enjoy the same game as those of in the business.

Just rewatched a clip of Rush Limbaugh getting the Medal of Freedom at the SOTU speech. Was struck by the standing O and Pelosi sitting there shuffling papers. So classy. Rush was a friend thru golf. He will be missed. RIP Rush, you never let the haters take you down.

The par-3 16th @CabotSaintLucia will be one of the most talked about on the course, and it’s like it was just there waiting for golf. Mike Keiser rated it a perfect 10. He also gave the par-3 17th a 10 (see previous photos in profile). Wind comes in fronting and from the left.

In golf design "restoration" can be a loaded word. But sometimes the goal is clear. How do you think Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and their team did at Southern Hills? These are all the 17th hole, from 1957 through present.

The Cape at the Lido @Sand_Valley being built by Renaissance Golf (tip o’ the hat to @bschneider126 and Brian Slawnik) is nearly grown in and among the most striking so far, with a moat of bunkers, big fairway ridges to play over and a kicker mound right for low-ball ricochets.

Coldstream, Cincinnati. Keith Foster renovated the course in 2021 and emulated the original 1959 Dick Wilson bunkering & greens. What a cool place, full of character, great bunker lines. Playing approaches into these deep greens and trying to get to the best angle is the game.

I wish I had a more original take but the 9th @ Myopia Hunt Club is just one of the most extreme/fantastic par 3s you'll ever see, all of 138 yards of it, the tiny green ringed w/ deep, vicious bathtub bunkers. Herbert Leeds brought the pain and didn't care about your feelings.

Friars Head is similar to Cypress Point in how it builds toward a clashing finish in a sublime setting. But it’s the early holes that set up the suspense, which also mirrors Cypress. The first nine, bouncing through the lowlands, is one of golf’s best creations.

"Strategy," the par 4 15th at The Lido @Sand_Valley , is fascinating. Believed based on a Tom Simpson concept, but reversed by Macdonald, there's no good place to drive the ball with bunkers strung diagonally in two directions, forcing layups or dangerous carries on both shots.

I understand all those who long for Riviera to return to the old Thomas/Bell faded edge irregular bunkers, but the current bunkers, with their sculpted lines, contrast and depth, are pieces of art in their own right and are a major part of how the design continues to draw you in.

I was thinking about Jim Engh, and wish I had more photos of holes he created. This is the Creek Club's 4th at Reynolds Lake Oconee, a remarkably elastic par-3 that can play both severe and coddling, depending on the hole location and the strike.

Payne’s Valley grabbed the spotlight last week, but Ozarks National presents a different view of design—demanding more direct engagement—and the property’s strongest collection of par 3s. Pictured: 17, 6, 8 and 12 (2nd hole not pictured).

It was fascinating to observe that The Lido @Sand_Valley is being built almost as if by a giant 3D printer using automated GPS-guided bulldozers. All in the effort to achieve as complete accuracy as possible to the original. Here's how it's being done.

An early look at the renovation of what’s long been considered one of Seth Raynor’s great “what if’s.” @TylerRaeDesign and @KyleFranzGolf are finally bringing out Lookout Mountain’s long latent potential.

The biggest improvement in position in the 2021-2022 @GolfDigest rankings belongs to Bel-Air, which jumped over 40 places to No. 127 following a restoration by Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf.

Topic: Bunkers Jim Urbina recently had some beautiful, concise thoughts on bunkers in LINKS. He'll be joining me in the Salon this week to discuss--please submit questions here if there are particular topics you'd like to hear him talk about.

Bill Langford, 1940. Pretty much sums up golf course architecture.
