Slipped over to Lido and Sedge Valley this week for a chance to help out a bit. The scale and detail of Lido will be stuck in my head for awhile. And the site for Sedge looks to be the best land on the entire property. Can’t wait to follow the progress of both!

A cool thing about Seminole is the siphon drainage system superintendent Hal Hicks installed. Really effective for a course with a high water table and not much elevation to surface drain. After rain events the system has so much force the water table can actually lower.

At the end of the day the best thing about golf is playing it, not watching it. Don't conflate the health of professional golf with the health of the sport in general. The game of golf is doing just fine.
Starting to wonder if making professional golf more intriguing is a losing venture, especially with the current state of technology.

Here was my Lido Competition par 3 design. Pā’s are Maori forts, and Ruapekapeka is one of the best surviving examples of their ingenious engineering. I wanted to blend the quirky, sharp, intentional pā engineering with Dr. Mac’s elegant, natural, camouflaged earthwork.

Growing tired of announcers saying, “very unlucky right there,” when guys are flying it close to the pin and then rolling off the back of the green. Particularly on holes 4, 5, 14, and 17. They aren’t unlucky, that’s just the consequence of greed on firm, contoured greens.

West Sussex has an uncanny resemblance to the courses of the Australian sand belt. The bunkering, ground, and texture are eerily similar. It just happens to sit atop an unusual raised glacial sand deposit surrounded by quaking bogs and clay. Perfect ground for golf!

Legacy Hills (formerly La Porte CC) is an original Langford 9 that would be right up there with Culver and Lawsonia if presented properly. For example... when i told my man he was parked on what should be green i got a funny look and silence...

Happened to snap a pic of the bunker construction methods on the 4th hole at Pebble Beach a few years ago. Using solid 4" ADS pipe to create a bunker edge. I've seen sand bags used as an edge, never drain pipe, though.

York CC front 9 dates to 1919, routing over a broad hill w/ a winding creek below. Long tilting fwys and heavily pitched greens still provide interest, and with standout holes like 2, 5, & 7, York has potential to show old school, parkland golf still has interest and teeth.

Almost 90 yrs on and we can look back on Alister MacKenzie’s admonitions and say they were wrong. The game grew. It got better in every single way.
Golf’s continuing appeal can be found in its self governing traditions and the hope of a new swing thought and improved equipment.
