Thankful for the time that my black college debate partner, also an ordained minister at the time, took to explain to me why Americans like him felt uncomfortable with the 4th of July, and why Juneteenth resonated with them.
I love the 4th. But some people don’t, and that’s ok.

What’s “silly and woke” about abolishing slavery? The holiday has existed this entire time, it just wasn’t federally recognized. It was in Texas.

I just saw a beautiful young Belgian family playing in the street of the farming hamlet where he gave his life in the winter of 1944/45, when I visited a few weeks back.
Remembering Pv. Jesse “Buddy” McGowan, my great uncle, a teenager when he landed on Utah Beach with Co. B of the 87th Chem. Mortar BN.
He was killed in the Battle of the Bulge, and it’s my privilege to honor him and protect the Ebenezer of his sacrifice against fascism.
