I’m a 4th year med student, with £100k+ of debt that DOESN’T include the £46k for my medicine tuition fees.
In 3 years time (once I’ve finished F2) I will be moving to Australia, this thread explains why.

We already have too many medical students. Myself (5th yr) + 2x4th yrs + 2x3rd yrs on one ward this morning, all trying to help/join in/learn. The bottleneck for training places after foundation is getting worse. Fix that first.

I’m a 4th year medic 🎉🎉🎉 third yr first time round was the worst of my life - thanks to my amazing family & friends who supported me through my repeat yr, I’ve now passed into fourth year and am absolutely buzzing! (1/3)

Unpopular opinion: if you pay £9,250 each year to a university to complete a degree, that fee should get you your own flippin’ cap and gown at YOUR GRADUATION
Med school has drained so much money and to have to pay £30 PER extra ticket for the ceremony. I appreciate there are huge costs to these events but it's just so sad 😭even to hire a gown £45 let alone the costs for the official photos and necessary accom cos its on a mon 9.30am

Did my 1st night shift on labour ward yesterday & had the absolute honour of helping deliver a gorgeous girl to the kindest couple I’ve met. The parents couldn’t stop thanking us (not sure how helpful I was lol) but it’s moments like this where I truly love being a med student 🥰

This week I was absolutely floored by news of the death of a fellow medical student. Claire was incredibly talented, kind-hearted & so passionate for the NHS - working for the ambulance service and as a med assist. She would have made an incredible Doctor. Rest in peace Claire 💛

Until the last year or so I was planning to stay in the UK. Things change. I also previously commented about how you still pay back your loans even after emigrating. I also provided the thread of the 11 reasons as to why I’m going, none of which mention student debt.

Guy at work got 2 marks from an A in his biology mock + planned to study anatomy. Given a D. Never had a D in his entire education. Now he has no idea what he’ll do. The government should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, but I imagine they do not give one iota.

Just to let you know incase you aren’t already aware, not every student is eligible for a maintenance/tuition loan (the government also scrapped the maintenance grant). And even if they are eligible, a lot of the time they don’t cover the cost of student life :)

Maybe not all students, but there are loads of us that actually turn up to placement and have full days. There’s also GP blocks/surgery where you do have to be there from 8/8:30. As a 3rd yr my GP block was 9-5:30 4 days and 9:30-1:30 the other day.

It’s also about cost of living/tuition fees, e.g. the opportunity to carry out a shift at work and earn money towards £37k fees vs travelling for one awkwardly timed lecture in the middle of the afternoon and missing out on £ to pay fees that uni’s don’t help with.
