Really heartbroken over this news. One of the sharpest, kindest, and most encouraging faculty members I have come across. Even though I was outside his field when I was a graduate student, he always had a generous word of support. Condolences to family, friends, and colleagues.

Our new article with @evrimtan is out at @PMReview_ ! What is the relationship between public service quality and citizen satisfaction? We approach this question from the perspective of a public agency, concerned about its reputation.

Today, far-right perspectives are evolving within a truly global network. The speed with which hate technologies are dispersing across the globe is staggering. They are getting more international, more coherent, and increasingly influential everywhere. (1/10)

States with poor reputations work harder to rebuild them. States with good reputations are tempted to exploit them. ➡️Reputations constrain the behavior of states with poor reputations more than those with good reputations. 4/5

Reputation is a core engine of IR, used to explain countless downstream phenomena in conflict & cooperation Reputations require stability so that audiences can use past data to guide today's expectations BUT things change constantly, often without audiences observing it. 2/5

How does the possibility of unobserved change impact reputation dynamics among states? Profoundly. When unobserved change is possible, states build and spend reputations depending on their current reputations **even when no change is observed or realized** 3/5

This implies a cyclical pattern in conflict and cooperation. Demonstrations of resolve improve reputations, but these improved reputations reduce the need for future demonstrations, creating cycles.

Aight. I see the identification police dunking on this study. @NYTHealth 's reporting of this study does make the causality leap we probably shouldn't. BUT! The study itself, imo, appropriately recognizes and attempts to address confounders. A brief thread:

When past citizen satisfaction is higher, citizens expect better performance. Yet, higher past satisfaction can make the agency deliver poorer performance, if it's priorities diverge from the citizenry See this thread by @evrimtan for a summary! 👇

I discuss a number of implications. E.g., on *observed changes* like leader turnover: Inherited reputation determines whether leader turnover leads to a "turnover trap," or its reverse, where leaders coast on their inherited reputation See the paper for more! 5/5
