@kolemichael Not a fair comparison. Foundations don’t typically fund heavy equipment for research such as wet labs and wind tunnels. Defense contractors, which have similar equipment needs as universities, have IDCs around the same level as universities.

@kolemichael Then let’s figure out how to make the system more efficient — including requiring less paperwork — instead of imposing a one size fits all cap of 15%. If you cut the overhead but not the paperwork requirements, the paperwork still has to get done. Who will do it?

@kolemichael That space is shared by collaborating labs! An across-the-board 15% cap won’t drive smart efficiencies—it will just cut critical infrastructure funding, forcing researchers to spend more time on admin instead of science. This policy is killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

@kolemichael Universities already help labs collaborate. A 15% cap on indirect costs won’t make research “more competitive”—it will make it harder to do. Indirect costs pay for things like lab space and supplies, compute, and other big equipment. Cutting them means the work doesn't get done.
