Joey was intensely private but great to a young student reporter. I never saw him light up in an interview until one day I did a story about the walk ons. He truly loved DePaul. The way they treated him at the end was ungood. He’s also the guy who got Aguirre and Cummings. RIP 🏀
Joey Meyer, the 1987 College Basketball Coach of the Year, who led DePaul to to the NCAA Tournament seven times and two Sweet 16’s has passed away at the age of 74.

Jim nails it. I was abt 9 when one Sat me, my mom and her bf posted up at this west side watering hole and when I saw his caddy w/the Minnie plates I raced into reds place at leavitt and cermak, looked for mr red himself who spun me right into Minnie. And he was a whole mensch ⚾️

This was excellent. And Joey never said a cross word about DePaul..that’s gospel. As a former student reporter I had a chance meeting with him a few years back. Told him what a raw deal we all knew he got..he barely nodded. We all learned from Joey’s example. Godspeed.
