hi! former naval engineer here! no bridge is designed to take a laden container ship *under its own power* just fuckin' piledriving main supports intersecting the bridge body. the material you want that does this is called land. no material is eating 116,851 tons moving at 6 kts!.

@CaptainCanucks8 @UweBollocks i love internet dudes who scream that things are FAKE FAKE YOU'RE A FAKER because it was like the first family guy joke and it's nostalgic for me; but also because i like laughing at grown adults who are proud of their technical improficiency.

i don't think intentions meaningfully alter the physics of the collision. they are practically massless and aboard ship they're still part of its inertial frame. we design systems to limits. nothing is everythingproof all the time.
@carpethefish you do understand that there is zero indication that this collision was caused on purpose, right?.

if twitter would stop crashing i could say more but this looks like a correctly-shaped answer. everyone congratulate this nerd for doing math and knowing stuff. we love to see it!.
@CWirostek @carpethefish The force required to stop a container ship in 6 feet is ~ 0.5(1E8 kg)(3m/s)^2/(2m) = 200 million newtons (aka 400 jet engines worth). That ain’t going to do it, kid.

private equity groups are inherently incapable of running any business for any period of time and should be prevented from managing any corporate entity as a class.
🚨#BREAKING: Red Lobster, the largest U.S. seafood restaurant chain known for its seafood and famous cheesy biscuits are getting ready to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy as early as next week after suddenly closing dozens of restaurants.

sorry i broke my own thread.
@Drakshal when you are bridging a multimile strait with deep water you can afford to build out. baltimore harbor is –to use a technical term– shallow as fuck. people need that space for actual maneuvering. it's a harbor. it gets crowded. dali's draft was ~38 ft.

a car weighs 2 tons we should probably keep them off the bridge too huh
I’m not an engineer so I will retract my take if it’s wrong. It just seems wildly negligent to me to have 2 ton ships crossing under a public-use interstate bridge than CAN completely collapse it? I grew up in Houston hearing about collisions in the ship channel but not collapse.

@realDonaldTrump I hear he has a MAGA tattoo. Very curious. why do Trump supporters murder people at over 100,000 times the rate that Antifa has? Many people are saying that you're telling them to do it with your racism and hate filled words. Someone should investigate it.

@Drakshal it is an infrastructure problem. but this would happen to a land bridge if a container ship plowed into it, too. if you don't want this to happen it has to be land, on the ground, with no bridging, where the literal earth can push back against the ship at every point.

there's lots of real answers. you could build a bigger tunnel. you could stop docking container ships at dundalk. you could require tugs. you could require more thorough propulsion system checks on start. you could build the bridge farther away. lots of real answers.
@carpethefish The only real solution would be to have a bigger bridge that somehow doesn’t need a support in the middle of the shopping lane, correct?.

i think this is a strong new discourse topic but what if i told you that nearly every bridge in america built on land would be built on stolen land?.
@carpethefish @ItsMeChrissilee Next conspiracy: why dont we just build every bridge out of land.

yeah man fenders will not help actually. scroll up for proof!.
Notice how the Key Bridge had no fenders. This is why fenders are so important. The only type of protection in this case was the foundation itself, which was not big enough to alter to the course of the ship given the concave shape of the hull. Poor design. 1/2

400 jet engines or 22/3 apollos. you can choose your preferred representation. important to note that since we're seeing some gatekeeping, they have baltimore in bio, so it's okay for them to talk about it.
@carpethefish 106,005,000 kilograms at 3 m/s is an impulse of 318,015,000 Newton-seconds. For reference, the total impulse required to send Apollo 11 to orbit was 495,000,000 Newton-seconds. Bridges are not built to bounce rockets off of their supports. This is an accident and a tragedy.
